McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Aston Martin is celebrating 25 years of the Vanquish with a limited-edition model crafted by ‘Q’ by Aston Martin, paying tribute to one of the British marque's most significant modern nameplates. Dubbed the Vanquish 25, this bespoke commission is limited to just 50 examples worldwide, split evenly between 25 Coupes and 25 Volantes (Roadsters). You can choose between either a 2+0 or 2+2 seating configuration across both body styles. Based on the Gen-3 Vanquish, Q has created this carefully curated specification inspired by the original Vanquish unveiled at the 2001 Geneva Motor Show. Exclusive Q Skye Silver paintwork is paired with Q Commission metal foil detailing on the side sills and shield vanes, bespoke Aston Martin script, a unique exhaust finisher, stainless steel side strakes, and exclusive Vanquish 25 badging. Completing the exterior is a subtle "V" motif incorporated into the 21-inch forged alloy wheels. 1-of-1 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante Wave Edition Heads to Naples Charity Auction

Tomorrow, January 31, 2026, a one of one Aston Martin Vanquish Volante Wave Edition will headline the Naples Winter Wine Festival auction, with proceeds directed to the Naples Children & Education Foundation. ‘Q’ Aston Martin’s bespoke program and Aston Martin Naples have built this one-off example to echo the waters around Florida Bay and the Everglades. It also lands after Aston Martin’s 75th year in the Americas, a period the British marque has framed with limited collections and headline debuts from Monterey to Florida. 2025 also marked 60 years of the Volante. Visually, the Wave Edition takes its cues from Collier County’s coastline. The exterior wears Q Iridescent Sapphire, a deep blue with a green shimmer that shifts as light moves across the body. Gloss Black carbon fiber upper and lower packages tighten the look, while an extended body color treatment pulls your eye along the car’s length. A Club Sport White livery runs over gloss black carbon fiber, designed to resemble waves breaking along the shoreline. You see it traced across the Formula 1-inspired Thermos Louvres on the hood, the side fenders, and the rear shield. A wave-inspired lower pinstripe anchors the design. Red brake calipers add a sharp visual hit, a reference to the red buoys that line Florida’s coastal waters. The gloss black carbon fiber sidestrakes carry a white V12 script that mirrors the livery. Inside, the cabin shifts to Glacier White leather, gloss black carbon fiber, and Pale Blue contrast stitching. The wave theme returns as a stitched motif in the headrests and engraved sill plaques. Aston Martin Wings appear on the shoulder bolsters, and the rear carbon fiber crossbrace carries the same Club Sport White pinstripe seen on the exterior. Q by Aston Martin Marks 60 Years of Volante With Ultra-Ex...

We recently had the chance to sample the standard version of the 2026 Aston Martin Vanquish Volante, and that car set a very high bar for what an open-air Aston should be. The 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 was explosive when pushed, yet refined enough to make long-distance driving surprisingly approachable, reminding us that Aston Martin hasn’t lost touch of the grand touring formula. That firsthand experience puts the spotlight on Aston Martin’s latest unveiling. To celebrate 60 years of the Volante name, the company’s bespoke division, Q by Aston Martin, has created not one, but two ultra-exclusive 60th Anniversary Editions. One is based on the Vanquish, the other on the DB12. Each will be limited to just 60 units worldwide and represent the highest level of performance, craftsmanship, and collectability Aston Martin has ever offered in its convertible lineup. Driving the standard V12-powered Vanquish Volante revealed how Aston Martin blends brute force with everyday usability. The 60th Anniversary Edition takes that foundation and elevates it, because Q by Aston Martin has pushed the twin-turbo V12 to 835 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque, with 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a top speed good for 214 mph. Those figures make it the fastest and most powerful production convertible in the British marque’s history, also outpacing rivals like the Lamborghini Huracán Evo Spyder. Throw in bespoke bronze detailing, tri-tone interiors, and strictly limited numbers, and the Vanquish Volante 60th Anniversary Edition has the hallmarks of an instant collectible. While the Vanquish caters to purists seeking peak performance, the DB12 Volante further balances that aforementioned everyday usability with Aston Martin’s super tourer credentials. Under the hood sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, still good for an impressive 671 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That’s enough for 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a 202 mph top speed. With a 2+2 layout, the DB12 Volante is versatile enough for longer trips, yet it still delivers the performance to rival cars like the latest 992.2 Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, unveiled this past weekend. It pairs luxury ride quality with the ability to devour miles at speed, making it the more approachable of the two Anniversary Editions. Q’s exquisite bespoke finishes ensure it is no less exclusive, with the same bronze-accented design language and handcrafted interior treatments seen on the Vanquish Volante. Both Anniversary Editions also feature Q Pentland Green paint with a matching Westminster Green fabric roof. Anodized bronze accents extend from the vaned grille to the 21-inch satin bronze wheels, side strakes, and interior touchpoints; speaking of which, the interior features tri-tone leathers in Centenary Saddle Tan, Ivory, and Woven finishes, which pair with Dark Walnut veneers. Embroidered 60th Anniversary logos and etched seatbacks highlight the commemorative theme of these special builds. Beyond the aesthetics, though, Q by Aston Martin of course, allows for near-limitless personalization. You can work with the team to tailor finishes, materials, and even components. No two cars need be identical, which only amplifies their appeal to collectors who prize individuality alongside exclusivity. Now, let's talk about the significance of the Volante lineage. It comes from Italian, meaning “flying,” and Aston Martin first used it in 1965 for the Short Chassis Volante, a model bridging the DB5 and DB6. Only 37 examples were ever built, and today they can sell for more than $1.5 million at auction, often double the price of a comparable DB5 coupe. That rare debut set the tone for six decades of open-air Astons that combined elegance with performance. Noteworthy examples followed. The DB6 Volante gained fame when Prince Charles received one as a birthday gift, the same one that he later converted to run on bioethanol. The V8 Volante of the 1970s and 1980s was a showcase of luxury and excess of its era, while in the 2000s, the DB9 and DBS Volante modernized the concept. At auction, Volante models often carry a 20 to 40 percent premium over their coupe counterparts. Collectors gravitate toward Volantes precisely because of this very pattern. Early DB6s, Short Chassis Volantes, and special editions like the coachbuilt Vantage Volante Zagato are already considered blue-chip investments, while even contemporary DBS Superleggera Volantes are starting to hold firm against depreciation. All this in a year where Aston is celebrating 75 years in the Americas, scarcity and desirability continue to drive premiums, and the 60th Anniversary Editions have been built in. With only 60 examples of each model, these cars are engineered to be cultural milestones and guaranteed collector’s assets. Back in May this year, we got a preview of the stunning Callum E-Type concept, a perfect blend of classic Jaguar ‘60s charm and a sleek modern design aesthetic. Now, the English designer is back with another showstopper: meet the Vanquish 25 Shooting Brake, a new twist on one of Aston Martin’s most iconic grand tourers, shared via a recent post on Instagram. For those unaware, Callum is one of the most influential automotive designers of all time, with a career spanning decades, including nearly 20 noteworthy years at Jaguar, reshaping the marque’s lineup through the 2000s and 2010s. He also penned the original Aston Martin Vanquish and came up with a timeless shape that balances aggressive sportiness with refined British elegance. The V12-powered Vanquish, of course, was Aston’s halo car of the era, and launched in 2001. It subsequently featured in the James Bond film Die Another Day the following year in ‘02. Fun fact: the green Jaguar XKR, seen in the " title="YouTube video" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen> is also a Callum design. Fast forward to more recent times, and Callum’s independent design firm decided to revisit the model with a modern-day take on the original. Dubbed Callum Vanquish 25, the limited commission restomod (25 examples) built by U.K.-based R-Reforged, first broke cover in 2019. Callum subsequently teased the Vanquish 25 Shooting Brake in 2023, and it builds upon that already-stunning coupe. Without a doubt, you can best appreciate this new form and profile from the side and rear ¾ views. Beyond the visual upgrades, the Coupe’s 6.0-liter V12 was uprated to produce 580 horsepower, up from 520, thanks to a carbon fiber intake, upgraded camshafts, and revised engine mapping, with the option to choose between a manual or automatic transmission. On the handling front, the car received Bilstein dampers, stiffer anti-roll bars, lowered ride height, and a wider track. Wider 20-inch wheels and more modern Michelin Pilot Sport tires with carbon ceramic brakes wrap up the upgrades. But coming back to shooting brakes, the idea isn’t new if you look back at Aston’s own history. Back in the 1960s, the DB5 and DB6 shooting brakes were crafted by various coachbuilders like Harold Radford or FLM Panelcraft, for clients wanting something unique. The Virage adopted the Shooting Brake form in the 1990s and in 2014. More recently, the Zagato Vanquish shooting brake, which debuted in 2017, limited to 99 units, was a hit, owing to its otherworldly take on the traditional two-door wagon form and Zagato’s signature double bubble roof. It certainly caught the attention of a select few out there, who still seek some practicality and space from a high-performance sports car, all while being wrapped in an exquisite coach-built package. Ian Callum’s Vanquish 25 Shooting Brake fits right into that same tradition. Our recent review of the latest Vanquish was all praises about modern tech and all the high-end upgrades, but if you’re a fan of the original Vanquish shape and are looking for something more pragmatic and tailored to today’s standards, this shooting brake will bring things up to speed and should certainly be on your radar. No word on pricing or specifications just yet, but for some context, the coupe cost £550,000 (~$740k) when it debuted. As for this shooting brake, Callum Designs says that it is purely conceptual for now, and interested parties should get in touch with them to find out more. Aston Martin’s new flagship debuts with a Venetian backdrop. Right now, the romantic and historic city of Venice is hosting the annual Venice International Film Festival, a star-studded event where cinematic excellence and the arts take the spotlight, along with the best of fashion, music, culture, and the rich history of Venice being showcased. Aston Martin’s global debut of the new V12-powered Vanquish flagship grand tourer took the spotlight, as well, set beautifully against the waters of the Venetian Lagoon, and attended by some of the Venice Film Festival’s biggest stars. Gathering at the Marina Militare, the grand debut of the new Aston Martin Vanquish featured performances from Masego, Walter Ricci, and DJ James Righton. In addition, five Academy Award-winning actors attended the premiere: George Clooney, joined by his wife Amal Clooney, Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Douglas, Kevin Costner, and Adrien Brody. Celebrating 60 years of its iconic appearances in James Bond films, famed 007 actor Daniel Craig also attended the debut, along with Joe Alwyn and Micheal Ward. Other celebrity guests at the event included Poppy Delevingne, Bianca Brandolini, costume designer Sandy Powell, Joel Edgerton, Haley Bennett, Cailee Spaeny, and Joe Wright. Guests were treated to a cocktail reception, as well as a three-course culinary experience from Dolada, which holds the longest-standing Michelin Star in Italy. Aston Martin’s Formula 1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll unveiled the new flagship grand tourer, which revives the V12 powertrain in Aston Martin’s lineup by introducing an all-new, Aston Martin-developed, bespoke 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine. The car will be strictly limited to fewer than 1,000 examples per year. An ionic nameplate that hasn’t been used since 2018, the new Aston Martin Vanquish revives the flagship Aston Martin name that featured cinematically, driven by James Bond in Die Another Day, and featured in films like Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, and The Italian Job. R-Reforged Reveals Production Version of the Callum Vanqu...

Back in June we teased you with Ian Callum's latest project. After retiring from Jaguar/Land Rover last year, he found himself unable to stop designing incredible cars. Since he is responsible for the original Aston Martin Vanquish, he decided to build his interpretation of the perfect example. The Aston Martin CALLUM Vanquish 25 by R-Reforged is a mouthful, and also a stunning supercar. Since the concept was unveiled, the Swiss coachbuilders amassed 350 engineering and design tweaks to make it more practical and relevant. Revealed: Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Volante R-Reforged logged over 20,000 test miles were used to dial in the Bilstein suspension, tire choices, and the sway bars. Head of engineering Adam Donfrancesco said: "There was a perception that much of what we planned was aesthetic but the way the car drives, feels, goes, stops and sounds is actually where a lot of our efforts have been focused. We’ve defined a set up that finesses the composed, big Aston Martin GT feel but sharpens and hones it in line the progress that new tyres, suspension and knowledge brings. It’s got to be a car you want to use and be adaptable; laid back and comfortable enough to soak up a 300-mile trip across Europe but equally engaging and rewarding on a 20-minute run to meet friends at an informal cars and coffee meet. That versatility and accessible performance is something many contemporary GTs lack. We have all missed the chance to just go for a drive for pleasure in the past few months. This is now the car to make the most of those precious times.” Under the bonnet is a 580 horsepower V12. Buyers can choose from a six-speed manual, sequential, or traditional automatic transmission. The exterior color palette is infinite, and the leather interior is from Bridge of Weir. On the same day that Aston Martin unveiled their AM-RB 003 hypercar, the English automaker has revealed yet another car. Welcome into the world the Aston Martin Vision Concept. Alright, so it may be a concept but they do say that it's a preview of their first series production supercar. “Firstly, what a pleasure to revive the Vanquish name. Synonymous with our series production flagships, it felt entirely appropriate to attach it to such a significant car," says Andy Palmer, Aston Martin Lagonda President and Group CEO. "The Vanquish Vision Concept marks another pivotal moment in Aston Martin’s history, and another critical step in delivering the Second Century Plan. Our first series production rear mid-engined supercar will be a transformational moment for the brand, for it is the car that will propel Aston Martin into a sector of the market traditionally seen as the heartland of luxury sports cars.” There are no specific details on the new Vanquish Vision Concept, but we do know that it does feature Aston Martin's new V6 engine, which is debuting in the AM-RB 003 as a hybrid-turbo setup. More technical specs will be revealed as the development of the car progresses. We do, however, know that it will have a bonded aluminum chassis.
