Inside Bugatti’s Quest to Perfect the Tourbillon’s V16 Acoustics

Bugatti has released the latest instalment of its A New Era series, this time documenting the noise certification of the Tourbillon. The film joins a series duPont REGISTRY has followed since the Tourbillon's June 2024 reveal, covering everything from the car’s design, powertrain, aerodynamics, connection to horology, Arctic validation testing, and Mate Rimac driving a customer-specification car in the snow.  Sound is an integral part of the exotic-car experience. For nearly two decades, the sound of Molsheim was the quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16. It powered the Veyron and Chiron through some of Bugatti's most significant speed milestones, including the Veyron Super Sport's 267.8 mph run in 2010 and the Chiron Super Sport 300+'s 304.77 mph run in 2019. While performance figures tell you how fast a car is, induction, combustion and exhaust give that performance much of its character. For Bugatti, replacing the W16 therefore meant creating not just a new engine, but a new voice for the French marque. The Tourbillon takes a very different approach as its naturally aspirated 8.3-liter V16 revs to 9,000 rpm, and according to Bugatti's engineers, the marque’s engines have historically always had a degree of rawness to them, and preserving that character became one of the defining targets for the new car. <- Gallery -> Getting there required thousands of simulations across the exhaust and intake systems. Engineers then worked extensively on the car's acoustic package so the mechanical sound of the engine and intake reaches the cabin naturally. Nothing is synthesized through the speakers. The objective was to retain enough of the V16's character to connect the driver with engine speed and throttle input, while keeping the cabin comfortable when cruising. The certification process itself is more demanding than it sounds. Under UNECE R51.03, the Tourbillon passes through a 20-meter measurement section with two microphones positioned at its midpoint. Multiple constant-speed and accelerated runs are combined to produce the final result, with a limit of 72 decibels. Engine noise is only part of that figure because tires make a significant contribution, as does aerodynamic noise from the bodywork. On the Tourbillon, even the active rear wing enters the equation because a surface capable of producing substantial downforce can also generate sound as air passes over it. Conditions have to cooperate too because both temperature and wind speed must both remain within prescribed tolerances, particularly because tire noise changes with temperature. A gust of wind exceeding the permitted parameters can invalidate an otherwise successful run. Development of the Tourbillon's sound alone has taken close to three years, and the result is not simply a louder or higher-revving successor to the W16, but an attempt to give Bugatti's next generation its own mechanical identity while preserving the rawness engineers consider part of the marque's character. The Cosworth-built V16 produces 986 horsepower on its own, with three electric motors lifting total output to 1,800 horsepower and 276 mph top speed. A New Era Begins in Molsheim as Bugatti Inaugurates La Manufacture for Tourbillon Production

Bugatti has inaugurated La Manufacture, a new production atelier on the grounds of the Château Saint Jean in Molsheim, France, officially opening the facility that will play a key role in  Tourbillon production, Bugatti’s upcoming $4+ million, V16 hybrid hypercar limited to 250 units, all of which have already been spoken for. The ceremony brought together French state representatives, local institutions, and a filmed address from Sébastien Martin, France's Minister Delegate for Industry. Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, and Christophe Piochon, President of Bugatti Automobiles, cut the ribbon before addressing guests on the significance of the investment for Alsace and for French industry more broadly. The building spans 34,930 square feet, is 443 feet long, and stands 29 feet high, and was completed in under a year. Its low profile and glass-and-dark-wall architectural language were designed to sit naturally within the Château grounds. Inside, teams will carry out exterior and interior pre-assembly, quality checks, vehicle inspections, and specialized rework processes, including polishing and painting. This new facility raises Bugatti's production capacity to up to 200 vehicles per year, positioning the marque for future models beyond the Tourbillon. It is a significant step for a brand that has delivered just over 1,100 cars spanning both the Veyron and Chiron.  That W16-powered era, which ran for more than two decades and closed with just 99 run Mistral roadster, defined Bugatti's modern identity under Volkswagen Group ownership. La Manufacture marks the first purpose-built production space of the Bugatti Rimac era, which has also established a Berlin design headquarters and a €200 million, approximately $227 million, campus in Zagreb, Croatia, alongside the historic Molsheim base. Molsheim has not always been Bugatti's only production address. Campogalliano, Italy, also features in Bugatti's assembly history as the site of the short-lived EB110 program between 1991 and 1995, and Levallois-Perret near Paris was a planned wartime facility that never reached full production. The Bugatti Tourbillon has very big shoes to fill when it comes to continuing Bugatti’s hypercar legacy. That’s why Bugatti set out to create something unprecedented, combining a naturally aspirated V16 engine with a hybrid system to give the Tourbillon immense power (1,800 horsepower total) and singularity worthy of the world’s finest automotive collections. In the same way that the Veyron raised the bar for hypercars in the 2000s, the Bugatti Tourbillon aims to define an echelon in the automotive world. Earlier in the year, we watched Bugatti Rimac CEO, Mate Rimac, put the upcoming Bugatti Tourbillon through its paces in the snow. Now, newly released footage shows the Tourbillon deep inside Sweden’s Arctic testing grounds. Three prototypes have now covered more than 4,970 miles near the Arctic Circle, supported by a 28-person specialist team, with temperatures dropping to minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit. Every input, from throttle mapping to regenerative braking, is recalibrated for a surface that offers minimal grip. The setting reveals details that controlled environments cannot. Against a frozen lake, the Bugatti Tourbillon’s exposed carbon fiber bodywork reads differently. Aerodynamic surfaces, especially the rear diffuser and wing assembly, stand out sharply against the snow after repeated drift cycles. Engineers use these sessions to study airflow disruption, stability, and heat management when the car transitions between grip and slip at high speed. It allows for calibration of torque delivery from the hybrid system, ensuring that all 1,800 horsepower can be deployed progressively, even when traction is limited. Inside, the prototype environment is unapologetically raw. Exposed wiring runs across the cabin, feeding continuous data back to engineers. On the dash sits the mechanical instrument cluster from which this hypercar takes its name. Made from over 600 components in titanium, sapphire, and ruby. It continues to function without compromise despite sustained exposure to extreme cold. As a refresher, power comes from an 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 developed with Cosworth, paired with three electric motors. Exotic cars and luxury watches have always shared a natural bond, connected by craftsmanship, precision, and an obsession with time itself. Bugatti has continued to bridge that gap closer and closer through its collaborations with Jacob & Co., engineering watches whose ultra-complex movements directly mirror the engines powering its hypercars. It’s mechanical art expressed in two different forms. As the Chiron wrapped up production in Molsheim, Bugatti worked quietly behind closed doors on its next hypercar, completely flipping the script and taking cues from haute horology to create the all-new Tourbillon. On the latest episode of Bugatti’s ‘A New Era’ documentary series, the topic of discussion focuses on the marque’s decision to ditch screens and pixels to deliver a truly exceptional cabin experience for both drivers and passengers. Instead of doubling down on tech, Bugatti built an instrument cluster that feels closer to a mechanical watch than a digital dashboard. It was a conscious decision to make something that would still feel relevant decades from now, long after screen resolutions and UI trends have moved on. In watchmaking, the tourbillon is one of those ideas that exists purely because someone cared enough to chase precision at all costs. Bugatti borrowed that philosophy, not just the word. Rather than naming this car after a driver or a record, the brand partnered with Concepto, a Swiss brand accustomed to building complex mechanisms rather than car parts. What they created is an entirely analog cluster made up of more than 650 components, assembled and finished by hand using the same techniques you’d expect to find inside a high-end watch, not behind a steering wheel.The wild part is how far this pushed everyone involved. Watchmakers usually live in a world measured in millimeters. Here, everything is bigger, heavier, and expected to survive vibration, heat, and speed. That meant standard tools were useless, and new ones had to be invented just for this project. Finishes like guilloché, Clous de Paris, and engine turning are executed with the same care you’d see in fine horology. How Form, Function, Past and the Future Came Together in ...

It’s been well over a year since the limited-run, naturally-aspirated V16-powered Bugatti Tourbillon first broke cover back in June 2024, but the French automaker continues to spotlight the immense engineering and design challenges behind its creation. Through its ongoing “A New Era” documentary series, Bugatti has been releasing short films that peel back the layers of the Chiron’s successor, revealing how a century of design heritage evolved into something entirely new. In the latest episode, Chief Exterior Designer Jan Schmid and his team walk you through this 250+ mph hypercar's exterior design philosophy. Their task was monumental: reimagine Bugatti’s DNA for a hybrid future without losing the instantly recognizable form that has defined the storied marque for more than a century. Schmid calls it “finding that sweet spot of what a Bugatti is and what a Bugatti can be.” Every line, vent, and crease on the Tourbillon serves a purpose. For instance, the widened and lowered horseshoe grille doesn’t just look aggressive; it improves airflow while perfectly accommodating an EU number plate without disrupting aerodynamics. It draws inspiration from past models, including the Type35. The fuselage’s centerline, inspired by the iconic Type 57 SC Atlantic’s riveted spine, flows from nose to tail, where it culminates in a slim, integrated third brake light. The sweeping Bugatti Line arcs from the A-pillar around the greenhouse before looping back toward the front, defining both motion and proportion. It’s also where the brand’s iconic duotone paint split begins, a nod to its earliest creations. The side profile exaggerates the “Coke bottle” shape, cinching at the waist before flaring into the muscular rear haunches.  Innovative packaging, as highlighted by CEO Mate Rimac, was key to the overall form, which also takes inspiration from nature, more specifically, the falcon. Despite matching the Chiron’s footprint, the Tourbillon fits more luggage space, an electric front axle, and additional aerodynamic ducting while sitting lower to the ground. The headlights, mounted on what Bugatti calls the “flying fenders,” serve a functional purpose, channeling air through the body to feed the radiators and side intakes. Out back, 124 LEDs form a single monobloc tail light bar with the Bugatti script glowing at the center. The open engine bay showcases the naturally aspirated V16 as part of the sculpture, rather than something to conceal. Other highlights include the aggressive diffuser that starts behind the front seat, and the active rear wing that seamlessly blends into the bodywork and only deploys when needed. This was something that Frank Heyl, Bugatti’s Director of Design, also threw light on in episode 2 of the series. Schmid’s favorite detail? The rear fender's broad surfacing is inspired by the Veyron’s muscular proportions. In his words, it gives “real strength and muscle” to the stance. Here's How Nature and History Shaped the Bugatti Tourbillon

If you’ve followed Bugatti’s design evolution as a brand through the generations, you know that beyond art form, innovation and fastidious build quality, aerodynamics has been at the very core of the French marque from the onset for conceiving some of the fastest cars on the planet for well over a century. Jean Bugatti pioneered the Surbaissé concept back in the 1930s, where he lowered the Type 57 SC Atlantic’s profile to aid with speed and efficiency. That same principle is what drove the design philosophy when designing Bugatti’s latest hypercar, the Tourbillon. “By submerging the engine below and behind the front axle, the hood, driver, and roof could be lowered, maximizing aerodynamic efficiency. It was unlike any other car of the time. And that same philosophy has been applied to the Tourbillon.” - Bugatti Design Director, Frank Heyl. The inspiration for the overall shape of the Tourbillon comes from nature, the peregrine falcon, to be more specific. Just as the bird tucks its wings to reduce frontal area during a dive, Bugatti’s latest flagship employs a narrowed teardrop profile to cut drag, while still housing a comfortable cockpit. That pursuit of efficiency dictated not just the exterior, but the way the cabin itself was packaged. Sitting 1.3 inches lower than the outgoing Chiron, the seats in the Tourbillon are fixed directly to the carbon monocoque, while the pedals and steering wheel adjust longitudinally. Simulating the posture of a single-seater race car, this layout keeps the driver close to the ground while allowing for a considerably low-slung stance. Building upon what the Veyron and Chiron have achieved over the past two decades, the engineering challenge at speeds in excess of 270 mph is as much about physics as design. At those speeds, the car generates enough lift to take flight like an aircraft. Hence, a neutral aero balance becomes a critical element. Too much lift and the car is airborne, whereas too much downforce and you end up overloading the tires.  The solution comes in an innovative diffuser system more than six feet long, running from under the cabin to a tall exit at the rear. Frank highlights how the exhaust gases feed into it, accelerating airflow and aid with maximizing downforce without excessive drag. Even the new wider and lower horseshoe grille serves a purpose, channeling air efficiently through dual radiators. Bugatti also eliminated a traditional rear crash beam, instead designing diffuser fins strong enough to absorb crash energy, an unusual safety solution that doubles as an aero device. This approach allows the Tourbillon to maintain a flush rear wing at top speed. The wing only deploys for handling or in situations needing the air brake, but never for straight-line stability.  As for performance, the Tourbillon debuts an all-new naturally aspirated V16 paired with hybrid assistance, and has a combined output of 1,800 horsepower, a worthy successor to the enduring legacy of the mighty quad-turbo W16 that powered the Veyron and Chiron from the Pïech-era. Inside, Bugatti resisted industry trends toward all-digital cockpits. Instead, the Tourbillon features an exposed mechanical instrument cluster (hence the namesake) with intricate dials and gears drawing from the world of horology.  This singular detail alone should help the Tourbillon endure generations, and fits into the brand’s commitment to timelessness while offering owners a tactile connection often missing from modern hypercars.
