Gooding Christie's to Auction Billy Joel's Motorcycle Collection at Inaugural Retromobile New York

More than 70 bikes from the singer's personal collection will cross the block at the Javits Center in November, all offered without reserve.

Retromobile New York is still seven weeks from opening, and its auction already has two headliners with famous names attached. Earlier this month, Gooding Christie's named Steve McQueen's 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider as the top lot of its first New York sale. Now the show's official auction house has added something from the other end of the garage: more than 70 motorcycles from the personal collection of Billy Joel, every one of them offered without reserve.

The Retromobile New York Auctions take place Friday, November 20 and Saturday, November 21 at the Javits Center, right in the middle of the show's four-day debut. For a first edition that has spent most of the year building its exhibitor list one wave at a time, this is the clearest sign yet that the auction side of the weekend will carry real weight.

Joel's interest in motorcycles is no celebrity side project. He has been collecting for decades, and for years much of this collection lived at 20th Century Cycles, his shop in Oyster Bay on Long Island. The lineup covers Ducati, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda, Kawasaki and more, across several eras and styles.

"I've always been drawn to bikes built by people who cared about getting every detail right," he said. "I've loved building this collection. Now it's someone else's turn to hit the road."

Proceeds will support The Joel Foundation, led by Billy and Alexis Joel. The foundation funds nonprofits working in music education, public and women's health, humanitarian causes and the environment.

The bike with the best story is a 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville that Madison Square Garden gave Joel to mark his 150th sold-out show at the arena. It wears custom paint commissioned for him and comes with a matching helmet listing every show and year he played the Garden, where he still holds the record for sold-out performances. The estimate is $10,000 to $15,000.

Ducati fans get two good reasons to register. The 1982 Ducati 900 Mike Hailwood Replica, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000, was Ducati's tribute to Hailwood's comeback win at the 1978 Isle of Man TT, 11 years after he last raced there. Then there's a restored 1975 Ducati 750 Sport at $25,000 to $35,000, the highest estimate among the highlighted bikes. Gooding Christie's calls it one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever made.

New York is the right room for it, too. Gooding Christie's president David Gooding pointed to how closely the city is tied to Joel, calling him "one of the most recognized motorcycle enthusiasts in the world."

You don't have to wait until November. Select bikes from the collection will be on display at Christie's Rockefeller Center from October 8 to 12, and the auction house asks media and collectors to book viewing appointments in advance.

At the show, auction lots will be on view at the Javits Center from Thursday, November 19 through Saturday, November 21. A Retromobile New York entry ticket gets you in to see every lot. Up-close inspection and bidding are reserved for registered bidders, so register with Gooding Christie's ahead of time if you plan to raise a paddle. Estimates do not include buyer's premium.

Retromobile New York runs November 19–22 at the Javits Center, presented in partnership with Richard Mille, with Gooding Christie's as the official auction house. Tickets are available at retromobile.us.
