McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Goodwood Is Coming to America: The Festival of Speed Expands Across the Atlantic

Monterey Car Week has no shortage of daytime spectacle. The best part often comes after the sun drops. The Drive is the Destination: LRC's Rally to Car Week 2026

Most people fly into Monterey Car Week. The smarter move is to drive there, and to make the drive its own event. Get Ready For Monterey Car Week 2026

We've spent the past year showing up differently, and if you spent any time with us lately, you noticed. Holding more events. Interacting with our readers and fans more than ever before. Offering more services and solutions for the automotive enthusiast. Even breaking world records. That shift is the whole point. duPont REGISTRY Group has always been where the collector world comes to look. Lately we care just as much about where it comes to gather, and nothing gathers this world like Monterey. And for this year, we're meeting you there in person, in a much bigger way. Monterey Car Week 2026 runs August 7 through 16, but we've been counting down for a while. There's too much packed into those ten days to take in all at once, so here are a few of the events we're looking forward to most, as they provide us with exciting opportunities to be present and engage with you all. It opens with the Luxury Rally Club's (LRC) Rally to Car Week, three days from the 10th through the 12th that start in Los Angeles and trace the Pacific Coast Highway north through Malibu and Pismo Beach with a tight group of owners who actually drive their cars. Midweek the Supercar Owners Circle Get Together Monterey pulls together one of the most exclusive rosters anywhere on the 12th and 13th, all curated drives and good company. Then Thursday the 13th brings The Preserve, the invitation-only Concours and Cocktails evening up at Santa Lucia, hosted by LRC. From there it just keeps building. Friday the 14th is The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, the garden party on the Quail Lodge lawns where the rarest cars and motorcycles share grass with collectors and the occasional royal. Saturday the 15th is an absolutely loaded day. Exotics on Broadway takes over Seaside as the largest single-day show of the week, wall to wall super, hyper, and exotic metal. Concorso Italiano runs the same day for everyone who lives and breathes Alfa, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati. Then the sun goes down and the Monterey Motorsports Festival lights up the Monterey County Fairgrounds from 5 PM to 11 PM, the biggest open-to-the-public night of the week. Car parades in motion, revving shows, live music, real nightlife energy. It's how Saturday should end. And these are just a few of the events happening all week. For Sunday, of course, there is the 75th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance taking place, an event that should be on every automotive enthusiast's bucket list. If you have never attended, this is something you have to experience at least once. Fair warning: once you go, you'll want to go back the following year. Monterey Car Week is an incredibly special time of the year for us at duPont REGISTRY Group as the entire week revolves around those we cater to. The collectors, the builders, the friends we've made over years of doing this, and they all find their way to Monterey. We want to be right there with them. SOC Classic Andermatt 2026 returns to the Swiss Alps from June 26 through June 28, marking the second edition of the gathering since the Supercar Owners Circle became part of the duPont REGISTRY Group last year. Retaining its invite-only format, this year’s event builds on the 2025 edition that brought together everything from vintage icons and modern exotics on the closed Furka Pass. This year expands that formula across two full mountain passes and a fleet of more than fifty collector cars. The Oberalp Pass and the Furka Pass will each close completely for the SOC convoy, handing two of Switzerland's most demanding roads over to the group for the weekend. Participants will drive through both passes, which wind through the Gotthard Massif, a stretch of the Alps long associated with some of Europe's most dramatic driving. Furka alone runs through the German-speaking Canton of Uri to a summit above 7,900 feet, a route open only during the warmer months and closed by snow the rest of the year. The Base for the weekend is again The Chedi Andermatt, the five-star alpine retreat designed by Jean-Michel Gathy, which is internationally renowned for its distinctive blend of cozy Swiss-chalet architecture and sleek, minimalist Asian-inspired design. The hotel's garage and library will host several of the program's gatherings, including an automotive presentation and a watch exhibition staged by Jaquet Droz, SOC's official watch partner. Lunch on the fully privatized Ambri Airfield comes courtesy of Da Vittorio, the three-Michelin-starred restaurant near Bergamo. Among them: a Ferrari 275 GTB, a 1981 Porsche 917 K-81, a Carrera 3.0 RSR IROC, a Lamborghini Diablo SE30 Jota, a Jaguar XJ220, and a Maserati MC12. Bugatti's presence grows considerably this year, with more than a dozen examples expected, spanning a 1920s Type 35 through the rare EB112 concept sedan. Several marque partners are holding details back until the event itself, including BMW Alpina and Bizzarrini, which is preparing to debut a car that has never been driven in public before. Rétromobile New York Unveils First Official Poster

The inaugural American edition of the long-running Paris classic car show, Rétromobile New York, has pulled the cover off its official poster artwork for the very first time, and the choice of subject says everything about what kind of event this is going to be. The piece depicts a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante finished in the show's signature sage green livery. There is nothing accidental about that pairing. The Atalante is one of the most evocative shapes Jean Bugatti ever drew, and the quiet green ground lets the bodywork carry the whole composition. That should ring a bell for anyone who has been paying attention. An Atalante from the same chapter of Bugatti history sat in a glass case at Rockefeller Plaza last December when Rétromobile first introduced itself to New York. Inside The Monticello Invitational's Hypercar-Filled Weekend

It's not every day you find yourself standing in a paddock where a Bugatti Bolide is parked a few feet away from a Pagani Huayra R while a McLaren Solus GT screams by in the distance. By Thursday afternoon, that somehow became completely normal at The Monticello Invitational. As transporters unloaded millions of dollars worth of hypercars and owners reunited ahead of a packed weekend at Monticello Motor Club, the event quickly settled into its own rhythm, one built around driving, conversation, and a shared appreciation for some of the world's most extraordinary cars ever created. Joining the festivities as an official media sponsor, duPont REGISTRY spent the weekend taking it all in alongside XPEL and Dealers Choice Auto Transport, from the first shakedown laps to the final stories shared over Sunday morning coffee.Thursday was technically move-in day, but there was never really a sense that anyone was waiting for the action to begin. Founder Ryan Boylan and the Monticello Motor Club staff had the organized chaos of transport arrivals down to a science, effortlessly maneuvering a priceless lineup of supercars and hypercars into the paddock while owners caught up with old friends and wandered the garages to see what had shown up. Meanwhile, the silence was regularly interrupted by the unmistakable sound of Multimatic's Ford GT Mk IVs and a McLaren Solus GT being put through their shakedown laps. Watching the Solus GT sprint through Monticello’s sweeping corners was one thing, but hearing it bounce off the surrounding hills was another entirely. It was just a small taste of what's to come and a reminder that these cars were never meant to spend their lives under covers in climate-controlled collections.That feeling carried straight through the rest of the weekend. Track sessions ran almost nonstop, with groups split between full-on factory race cars running slicks and road-going hypercars stretching their legs in a way they rarely get the opportunity to. Everywhere you looked, there was something worth pausing for, a Pagani Utopia sitting quietly beside a McLaren P1, a Porsche Carrera GT parked next to a Koenigsegg Agera RS, or an Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro being readied for another run. The paddock itself almost became the main attraction, with owners and enthusiasts making their way between clubhouse and tarmac, swapping stories, comparing opinions, and gravitating toward whatever cars had just rolled into pitlane back in from a session.One of the more unexpected highlights came courtesy of Bentley Motors, which somehow managed to turn a busy corner of the paddock into something like a neighborhood coffee shop. Its bespoke Joe & The Juice Bentayga, complete with a custom, integrated espresso setup in the rear, was serving handcrafted drinks from sunrise to sunset, making it a natural meeting point between sessions. Bentley also brought a fleet of its latest models, giving guests the chance to step away and experience the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga on the open road.Of course, there was one moment that pulled just about everyone away from the clubhouse and to the pit wall. The weekend featured an endless rotation from Pagani, Ferrari, Koenigsegg, Bugatti, McLaren, Czinger, Hennessey, and more, but when the Pagani Huayra R, Pagani Zonda Revolución, and Ferrari FXX took to the track together, everything else faded into the background. The three screaming naturally aspirated V12s built a soundtrack that no recording could ever properly capture. You didn’t just hear it, you felt it in your chest. Conversations stopped mid-sentence, cameras came out almost instinctively, and for a few brief minutes, the entire property seemed to pause just to take in a truly historic moment.As the final sessions wound down, everyone gathered on the main straight for the annual group photo, assembling a lineup that felt almost unreal: the Solus GT, Ford GT Mk IV, Pagani Zonda Revolución, Ferrari 288 GTO, McLaren Senna GTR, Bugatti EB110, Koenigseggs, Porsches, and more modern hypercar icons than you could ever believe at once. By Sunday morning, the pace had softened completely. The clubhouse filled with guests over breakfast, Formula 1 playing in the background, and conversations circling back through the highlights of the weekend.And in the end, that’s what tends to stay with you after leaving The Monticello Invitational. The morning came together in collaboration with Duane Wilson of Porsche Stimmung, who has become something of a pillar in the New York scene. If you've spent any time at a city cars & coffee or on an early drive with collectors, you've probably crossed paths with his work. He brings the kind of energy that turns a parking lot full of cars into an actual community, and that showed. Then there was the centerpiece.
