McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Last of Legends: Why Mansour Ojjeh’s McLaren Road Car Col...

The late Mansour Ojjeh was many things – visionary, industrialist, connoisseur – but above all, he was a man whose passion for automobiles and motorsport helped shape the modern performance landscape. Now, his unparalleled personal collection of 20 McLaren road cars is being offered for sale by UK-based luxury dealer Tom Hartley Jnr Ltd. For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this is far more than a transactional moment – it's the rare opportunity to acquire a historic McLaren collection curated by the man who helped make the McLaren F1 a reality. A Legacy Rooted in Racing and Innovation Born in 1952, Ojjeh was the son of Saudi-naturalized Syrian businessman Akram Ojjeh, founder of the TAG Group (Techniques d’Avant Garde). With a French mother and a cosmopolitan upbringing spanning Europe and the United States, Mansour Ojjeh developed an international perspective from an early age. After graduating from Menlo College and earning a master’s degree from Santa Clara University, he joined TAG and began forging his own legacy. His early car collection included icons like the Lamborghini Countach and Rolls-Royce Corniche, eventually maturing into Ferrari royalty with models like the 250 California Spyder and 288 GTO. But it was a visit to the 1978 Monaco Grand Prix that shifted his automotive interest from personal passion to professional ambition. After sponsoring the Williams F1 team between 1979 and 1982, Ojjeh's vision diverged from that of team principal Frank Williams—particularly regarding his desire to build the ultimate road-going supercar. That divergence led to his decision to invest in McLaren, forever changing the trajectory of Formula 1 and high-performance road cars. The TAG-Porsche Power Play Ojjeh acquired a stake in McLaren in 1984 for a reported $5 million. This investment helped launch a new golden era for the team. With backing from TAG, McLaren developed turbocharged Porsche-built V6 engines, leading to three Formula 1 Drivers’ Championships and two Constructors’ titles between 1984 and 1987. Ojjeh also acquired Swiss watchmaker Heuer in 1985, rebranding it as TAG Heuer, which later sold to LVMH for $740 million. Still, his dream of producing an uncompromised supercar remained. That vision began to take shape in 1988, after McLaren had lost a perfect F1 season at Monza. In a now-legendary moment at the airport, Ojjeh, Ron Dennis, Creighton Brown, and Gordon Murray conceptualized what would become the McLaren F1. Murray sketched the car on the spot: a lightweight three-seater with a central driving position, a BMW V12 engine, and a carbon-fiber monocoque – the first in a production car. The result was historic. The GTR version of the McLaren F1 went on to Le Mans outright in 1995, and another variant set a top speed record of 240.1 mph in 1998, becoming the fastest road car of its era and one of the most iconic supercars ever built. Curating a McLaren Masterpiece Ojjeh’s personal McLaren F1 journey began with chassis 036, finished in pale blue metallic with a blue Alcantara interior. He later replaced it with chassis 075, the final standard production F1 that originally belonged to his brother, and painted in a bespoke color inspired by Château d’Yquem. The hue became known as "Mansour Orange", renamed by McLaren in his honor and unavailable to anyone else. When McLaren Automotive launched its road car division in 2010, Ojjeh set about building what is widely regarded as the most complete private McLaren road car collection ever assembled. Highlights include: ● F1 ● MP4-12C ● P1 GTR ● Speedtail ● Senna ● Elva ● Sabre ● Multiple Longtail and Le Mans variants Each car was ordered with a final chassis number and factory specifications. All remain in delivery-mile condition, except the F1 and P1 GTR. Under Ojjeh’s instruction, McLaren itself maintained the fleet – an honor granted to no other collector. More Than a Collector Ojjeh’s influence extended far beyond garage walls. As a co-owner and board member, he helped guide McLaren to seven Formula 1 Constructors’ and 10 Drivers’ Championships. He also played a key role in the founding of McLaren Applied Technologies, further reinforcing the brand’s status as a performance innovator. Despite his business acumen, Ojjeh was known for his loyalty, humility, and passion. When he passed away in 2021, tributes poured in from across the global motorsport and luxury communities. Now, four years later, his widow, Kathy Ojjeh, shares her thoughts on the sale: “McLaren meant so much to Mansour. It was more than business, it was pure passion and it was in that vein that he curated this unique collection of McLaren road cars. The ‘Last of Legends’ car collection is a treasure for our family – a reminder of the hours we witnessed Mansour designing each car to his specifications. He had an unusual talent for detail that stuns and impresses, a talent driven by the very passion he nurtured for so many years with McLaren. In 2025, it is true that $100,000 won’t get you that far in the supercar world, unless, of course, you’re looking at the pre-owned market. It is hard to believe that a decade ago, that figure could get you deep into premium territory, with cars including the 911, AMG V8s, and even lightly optioned Italian exotics. Today, even a base Carrera 992.2 hovers around $130k, before options. So we can all agree that the sports car landscape has shifted, and with everything from supply chain disruptions to inflation and tariffs, it has only driven prices north. Having said that, there’s thankfully still a healthy dose of brand-new and lightly used enthusiast cars that can be had for under 100 grand, and they’re better than ever. From nimble coupes to mid-ships and more, you can still snag some genuinely cool rides, without breaking that six-figure ceiling, and we’ve gathered some of the best ones to consider in this list. Now in 2025, the latest GR Supra has matured into a serious track toy, and with the six-speed manual joining the lineup in 2023, the Supra was finally able to win over skeptics. Also, with an aftermarket tune and upgrades like downpipes and turbos, and can easily extract anywhere between 500 and 600 horsepower. The range starts at $57k for the 2026 model year, and as Japan’s answer to the Porsche Cayman, it offers a combination of sports car precision and real-world livability that comes with a Toyota badge. View All Toyota Supras For Sale BMW Z4 The Z4 has worn many hats since it first debuted all the way back in 2002. Building upon the Z3 that came before it, this low-slung Bavarian front-engine rear wheel drive sportscar with its long hood and stuby back, can trace its lineage back to the classic 507. While the third-gen Z4 that debuted in 2018 was co-developed and shares its bones with the aforementioned GR Supra, it differs in character. Where the Supra is strictly a coupe, the current 2025 BMW Z4 is only available as a Roadster, ditching the folding hardtop of its predecessor. While the base model packs a humble 2.0-liter four-cylinder, with 255 horsepower on tap, the one you want is the higher-spec Z4 M40i variant that packs the same 3.0-liter inline-six turbo (B58) with 382 horsepower, paired to a six-speed manual and rear wheel drive. At $66k, it does carry a premium over the Supra, but they don’t call it badge engineering for no reason, and with the Z4, you get the open-top experience. View All BMW Z4s For Sale BMW M2 From the outset, the compact M2 and the 1M coupe, before it, have been thoroughbred cars for the purists out there. Big, powerful engine upfront, a short wheelbase,e manual gearbox in the middle, and rear-wheel drive out back. Launched in 2016, there were things about this format that should remind you of the OG E30 M3. While it has gained more power and is sharper to drive, the M2 has become a lot bulkier. Nonetheless, the 2-door coupe remains pretty raw, for what is BMW M division’s entry-level car. For 2025, the M2 is one of the last M cars standing. With 473 horsepower from its more potent 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six (S58), paired to a six-speed manual and rear wheel drive, the M2, starting at just over $68,k offers a great blend of everyday usability and something you can track on the weekends. View All BMW M2s For Sale Chevrolet Corvette C8 Chevy rewrote the Corvette rulebook when it introduced the C8 back in 2020. While the mid-engine format finally came to fruition under the storied badge on the eighth-gen ‘Vette, this is something that the model’s chief architect, Zora Arkus Duntov, envisioned as early as the 1950s. In the five years since the C8 was launched, the lineup has continued to evolve with new body styles and variants like the Z06, e-Ray, and, more recently, the Z1X, all joining the entry-level Stingray. While the Corvette has gracefully embraced the supercar format with its mid-ship layout, one thing that it shares with its predecessors is the ability to offer exceptional performance both in terms of handling and dynamics, at an attainable price. The base C8 Stingray is no exception, and with its 6.2-liter V8 and 490 horsepower, you’re looking at a near 200 mph performance machine at a starting MSRP under $70k. View All Chevrolet Corvettes For Sale Porsche Boxster The Boxster began life in the mid-1990s as an entry-level model, to take on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SLK and the Porsche Boxster. But crucially, it remains one of the most important Porsche models, as the success of the Boxster and the Cayenne that came in the early 200swasre pivotal in saving the German brand from going bankrupt. While early 987 models had their challenges, the subsequent 981, 982, and the current 718 generation built upon the mid-engine roadster format with an expanding lineup of engines and trims In the three decades since, the Boxster has carved out a niche for itself as a dependable and practical sports car. In 2025, though, making the case for a Boxster is more important than ever, as an all-electric replacement is on its way. Depending on demand, though, Porsche could still hang on to the gas-powered model. The range starts at $75k for the 2.0-liter four-cylinder, with 300 horsepower. For six-cylinder power, you’ll have to look at the $100K GTS 4.0 that packs a 4.0-liter and 394 horsepower. Whichever model you choose, a six-speed manual is available. View All Porsche Boxsters For Sale Porsche Cayman The Cayman essentially being the Coupe sibling of the Boxster, expect more of the same, but with a stiffer, lighter, and more focused setup. Since its launch in 2005, the Cayman has long lived in the shadow of the 911, but ask any Porschephile and they’d tell you that the Cayman offers a genuinely sharp, balanced, and involving chassis. For 2025, the lineup is pretty much identical to that of the Boxster but a tad bit cheaper across the four trims. Once again, the turbo-fours starting at $73k offer plenty of poke for the money, but for naturally-aspirated goodness, you’ll have to look at the 4.0-liter six-cylinder GTS variant, and with the coupe’s dynamics, you’re getting access to the GT3 heart, this side of a 100 grand. View All Porsche Caymans For Sale Lotus Emira The Emira marks a turning point for the Lotus brand. As the last gas-powered model from the British sports car maker that built its reputation for featherweight engineering and simple design. In our Emira review, we found that the Emira carries through the ethos of founder Colin Chapman’s philosophy of lighter is better, tipping the scales at just over 3,100 pounds. Launched in 2022, the Emira builds upon models like the equally compact Evora, Exige, and Elise and is the last hurrah before the brand steadily makes its shift toward all-electric models. For 2025, the Emira is already a collector favorite with its mid-engine balance, exotic looks, and a manual option. From some angles, it almost looks like a Baby McLaren, which is no bad thing. Compared to its predecessors, the Emira is also a vast improvement when it comes to build quality and creature comforts in the cabin. Starting at a shy under $100k, the Emira, with its supercar styling and an analog feel, is a fitting send-off to Lotus’ internal combustion engine era. While the AMG-sourced, 2.0-liter four can still be very entertaining, it's the 3.5-liter V6 with 400 horsepower that you want, as it is the only way to get the 6-speed manual. It’s sometimes hard to believe that just over a decade ago, spending $100,000 offered significant buying power for many brand-new luxury cars and high-performance sports cars. However, the market outlook for new cars remains volatile and uncertain in the post-pandemic era, and with Trump’s recent tariffs impacting car imports. While $100,000 can still get you into some impressive brand-new luxury or high-performance rides today, the range of options, particularly for top-tier models, may be more limited than in the past. For some context, even an entry-level (992.2) Porsche 911 Carrera now costs around $128k. This is before markups, options, and even longer waiting times. But if you don’t mind going down the used car route, a $100k remains a sweet spot, and you can still get your hands on some highly desirable automobiles, including supercars. Technological advancements, complex hybrid systems, driver aids, and the sheer number of screens in modern vehicles may sometimes feel like they’re diluting the onboard experience. This is even more true when it comes to enthusiast and performance models, but the same can’t be said about cars from the 1990s and 2000s. These analog cars were legends in their own time, offering up experiences that are becoming increasingly rare to find. Most of these pre-owned gems have already taken their biggest depreciation hit, and many models, especially manual transmission variants or limited edition cars, are bottoming out and in some cases even starting to appreciate. So buy wisely and maintain it properly, and you might just find that your $100,000 automotive indulgence holds its value far better than anything rolling off the production line today. You stand to gain from the thrill, the pedigree, and potentially, a sound investment. Rogue Van Company's RC-1: The Van That Outdoes All Others

As the world of custom Sprinter-based vans continues to crowd with dozens of builders embracing the platform in strikingly similar ways, the RC-1 asks: “What if?” Built by Rogue Van Company, located in San Diego, CA, the RC-1 rejects the familiar and embraces the conceptual. It’s the brainchild of RVC founder and CEO Santiago Fileta, and it was designed to showcase the company’s customization prowess on display at SEMA. It’s a van that pushes what this well-known chassis is capable of. From its off-roading capabilities to its expansive amenities and e-bike crane, the RC-1 pushes the idea of a rugged van to its limits. What started as a 170-inch high-roof chassis van has morphed into a genuine off-roader with a two-inch lift, adjustable shocks, electronic lockers, upgraded axles, and beefy Toyo 37-inch tires on all four corners. However, despite these massive changes beneath the skin, RVC has retained all of its factory tech suite, ranging from cruise control to safety systems like lane-keep assist. Its adjustable shocks can soften considerably while off-roading and firming up on the road to keep body motions in check. Depending on the situation, an added central touchscreen offers a handful of throttle maps to smooth its power delivery. On the outside, it sports no less than three ladders, which lead up to a roof equipped with Starlink for off-the-grid connectivity and a space where an additional roof tent can be added. Along its sides, you’ll find a complete Snap-On tool set, finished in a matching shade of yellow, while the rear houses a spare wheel and tire, an external storage area, and an e-bike by Onyx on top. The latter weighs around 150 pounds, requiring a custom crane system for easy storage. Inside, its customization touches are equally extensive. The RC-1 relies heavily on wood for its interior paneling, parallel to configurable strips of LEDs on the roof. Its table tops combine Walnut with epoxy to create a flowing river effect. Its kitchenette incorporates a fridge, wine cooler, freezer, and an expresso machine that stows beneath its sink. Open its drawers, and you’ll find bespoke kitchenware, including a range of knives explicitly built for the RC-1. Beyond the traditional shower and toilet setup, the RC-1 incorporates a steam element, which, coupled with doors that create a perfect seal, offers sauna capabilities. A custom premium audio system introduces a variety of hidden speakers throughout the cabin, which pair with a TV positioned above the bed or a display hidden behind a mirror in the kitchenette. A sizable 28-kilowatt-hour battery pack powers the RC-1’s amenities, while a 900-watt walkable panel system on the roof recharges it alongside the Spriner’s engine. The RC-1 is the ultimate Sprinter-based off-roading van, and it’s currently offered for sale. Like all of RVC’s builds, it comes with a 3-year / 36,000-mile conversion warranty alongside the 5-year / 100,000-mile coverage from Mercedes-Benz.
