Far beyond the reach of conventional adventure, EarthRoamer stands as a singular expression of what is possible when uncompromising luxury meets the untamed wilderness. Since 1998, this pioneering American marque has crafted the world's most coveted expedition vehicles, each one a bespoke sanctuary engineered to traverse continents, weather any climate, and deliver its owners into the most breathtaking corners of the earth without ever surrendering comfort, refinement, or the quiet confidence that comes with owning something truly exceptional.
In this exclusive spotlight, we sit down with the team behind EarthRoamer to explore the philosophy, craftsmanship, and unwavering commitment to excellence that have elevated this storied brand into a category entirely of its own. From the intimately personal custom order process to the thriving community of owners who traverse the globe together, discover what it means to transform the journey itself into the ultimate luxury.
What inspired the founding of EarthRoamer back in 1998?
EarthRoamer began with frustration—and a vision to do better. Founder Bill Swails was an avid wildlife photographer who spent extended time in remote environments, often in harsh conditions. After going through multiple traditional truck campers that simply couldn't withstand cold, wet, and rugged environments, he realized the industry wasn't building for true off-grid exploration.
So he set out to create something that didn't exist at the time: a vehicle that could go deep into the wilderness, stay there comfortably for extended periods, and perform reliably in any condition. That original pursuit—to combine capability, durability, and comfort—still defines EarthRoamer today.

What sets an EarthRoamer apart from other expedition vehicles on the market?
There are three things that truly separate EarthRoamer: luxury, experience, and long-term value.
First, these are not stripped-down overland rigs—they are fully self-contained luxury environments designed to operate far beyond where traditional RVs can go. Every detail, from materials to systems, is built with the expectation that you'll be living off-grid for extended periods without compromise.
Second, experience matters. With over 27 years in business and more than 450 vehicles produced, EarthRoamer has a proven track record that very few companies in this space can match. In fact, only a handful of those vehicles are no longer in service—and those were due to accidents, not failure. That says everything about the durability and engineering behind each build.
And finally, long-term value. Unlike most RVs, EarthRoamers hold their value exceptionally well over time. They're built to last decades, not years, and the market reflects that.
What does the custom order process look like from start to finish?
The process is intentionally personal and highly tailored. It begins with a deposit to secure a place in our production queue, followed by a collaborative design phase with one of our specialists. This is where each client shapes their vehicle—from layout and materials to systems and finishes—ensuring it reflects both their lifestyle and how they plan to travel.
Once the vehicle is complete, delivery is an experience in itself. Owners spend a full day with our team going through every system, learning how to operate, maintain, and get the most out of their EarthRoamer.
From there, we encourage new owners to spend a few days at a private 3,500-acre ranch to give them the opportunity to live in the vehicle, test everything in a real-world setting, and build confidence—while still being close enough to our team for support during those first critical days.

What are the most popular customizations customers request on their builds?
Interior customization is where most owners really make the vehicle their own. Cabinetry is a big one—tailored storage solutions that reflect how each person travels, whether that's extended international trips, photography expeditions, or family adventures.
Beyond that, we see a lot of personalization in materials and finishes—everything from wood tones and upholstery to countertops and hardware. No two EarthRoamers are exactly alike, and that's very intentional.
What does the ownership experience look like after delivery — service, community, support?
Ownership doesn't end at delivery—it's where the relationship really begins.
We provide ongoing support with a dedicated team available whenever owners need assistance, including 24/7 call support for questions in the field. Whether someone is in Colorado or deep in Baja, they know they can reach us.
There's also a strong sense of community. Each fall, we host an Owners Rally that brings together 40–50 EarthRoamers in one location. It's a chance to connect, share stories, and experience the vehicles together.
In addition, our Adventures program offers guided trips with small groups of owners. These trips are designed to build confidence behind the wheel, allowing people to push their vehicles further than they might on their own—on trails we know intimately. It's a unique combination of support, education, and community that's hard to replicate.

What advice would you give someone considering their first expedition vehicle?
Do your research—and not just on the vehicle itself, but on the company behind it. This is a long-term investment, and you want to know that the brand will be there years down the road when you need service, support, or upgrades.
And the second piece of advice is simple: you get what you pay for. In this category, shortcuts show up quickly—especially when you're miles from anywhere. Investing in quality, engineering, and proven reliability makes all the difference when it matters most.
How do you see expedition vehicles evolving in the next few years?
The biggest advancements are happening in electrical systems. Battery technology continues to improve—particularly in energy density—which allows for longer off-grid capability with less weight and more efficiency.
Chassis platforms from manufacturers like Ford and Chevrolet are evolving as well, but those changes tend to be incremental rather than transformative.
One of the most impactful shifts in recent years hasn't been mechanical at all—it's connectivity. The introduction of Starlink has fundamentally changed what it means to travel remotely. Since 2023, we've standardized Starlink across our builds, allowing owners to stay connected virtually anywhere in the world. That's been a game changer.

How does the off-grid solar/diesel hybrid system actually work in the real world?
Quite simply—it works, and it works exceptionally well.
EarthRoamer's system is designed so that energy is rarely a limiting factor. The combination of large solar capacity, robust battery storage, and a diesel-based system for backup ensures consistent power in almost any environment. In real-world use, most owners find that power isn't the constraint—it's supplies.
In fact, it's common to hear that people run out of food before they run out of energy. With features like a 10 cubic-foot refrigerator, that's saying something.
The goal has always been true independence, and the system delivers on that.
For someone on the fence—what would you tell them to help them take the leap?
There are over 11 million registered RVs in the U.S.—but only about 1.4 million campsites with hookups. That means most people are competing for crowded, often uninspiring locations, planning months in advance and hoping for good weather.
Now compare that to nearly 600 million acres of public land and national forest—places that are remote, quiet, and often some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
An EarthRoamer changes where you can go—and how you experience it. It gives you access to those places, without giving up comfort or capability.
At a certain point, it becomes less about the vehicle and more about the lifestyle it unlocks.
