There is no shortage of ways to make a Porsche 911 faster. Gunther Werks, however, has spent nine years pursuing something more exacting: stripping away everything that does not serve the driving experience and rebuilding the iconic 993-generation platform around a singular objective – going faster. The result – revealed today at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering – is the Gunther Werks GXR-Evo, the fastest naturally aspirated car in the marque’s history and its most extreme expression of analog performance. Limited to just 15 examples globally, the GXR-Evo transforms the 993-generation platform into a purpose-built machine engineered around lightweight construction, motorsport-derived technology and an uncompromising connection between driver and car. At its core, the GXR-Evo represents Gunther Werks’ philosophy of blending analog performance with modern engineering and bespoke design. But this latest commission pushes that philosophy beyond the boundaries of its previous work, shedding 210 pounds compared with the Coupe and weighing just 2,386 pounds dry. “The GXR-Evo represents the purest interpretation of everything Gunther Werks stands for,” said Peter Nam, CEO and founder of Gunther Werks. “Every component has been designed with purpose, every surface shaped by function and every decision made to elevate the driving experience. This is a no compromise racing thoroughbred engineered to attack every apex with absolute precision. All while preserving the analog soul and legacy that is ingrained in the DNA of all Gunther Werks cars.” The GXR-Evo is, in other words, a study in restraint. Rather than adding weight and complexity in pursuit of performance, Gunther Werks has scrutinized virtually every component, removing unnecessary mass while reengineering the car around aerodynamic efficiency and circuit capability. Carbon Fiber, Crafted for Speed The transformation begins with a full carbon-fiber body finished in an exquisite 12k 2x2 carbon-fiber weave. The material is central not only to the GXR-Evo’s weight reduction but also to its aerodynamic strategy, with the bodywork engineered to maximize efficiency while minimizing mass. At the front, an aggressive splitter and canards work with integrated tunnels that direct airflow through the vented front fenders. The system relieves pressure while generating significant front-end downforce. The rear receives an equally purposeful treatment. A newly engineered high-downforce wing features sculpted carbon-fiber endplates, while the rear window has been deleted in favor of an integrated shark-fin stability element. Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six co-developed with air-cooled specialists Rothsport Racing. Its power is delivered through a comprehensively re-engineered Getrag G50 six-speed manual transmission, preserving the mechanical engagement that defines Gunther Werks commissions. A raw straight-pipe exhaust system further emphasizes the car’s uncompromising mechanical character. Combined with a dry weight of just 2,386 pounds, the powertrain gives the GXR-Evo an exceptional power-to-weight ratio while maintaining the visceral connection between driver and machine that sits at the heart of Gunther Werks’ philosophy. The intake system receives equally specialized attention. A slide-valve throttle-body system replaces conventional butterfly valves, eliminating airflow obstruction within the intake tract to maximize volumetric efficiency. The result is razor-sharp throttle response and immediate power delivery, reinforcing the character of the naturally aspirated engine. A Chassis Built for the Circuit The GXR-Evo’s chassis has been engineered with the same single-minded approach. A bespoke double-wishbone front suspension is paired with JRZ three-way adjustable remote-reservoir dampers. Brembo Pista race brakes provide stopping capability, while motorsport-grade ABS is incorporated into the package. The combination is intended to give the GXR-Evo the precision necessary for demanding circuit driving without abandoning its analog character. That distinction is important. Gunther Werks describes the GXR-Evo as an exercise in engineering designed to bridge the gap between road legality and motorsport capability. Nearly every aspect of the vehicle has been remastered around uncompromising circuit performance. The result is not simply a lightweight 911. It is a purpose-built interpretation of the air-cooled 911 silhouette, engineered around the demands of a driver who wants the mechanical experience of a highly developed analog machine. The Cockpit Becomes a Driver’s Workspace Inside, the GXR-Evo is stripped to its essential purpose: maximizing driver performance. A Racetech carbon-Kevlar racing seat secured by a Schroth six-point harness anchors the driver within an eight-point roll cage. Ahead of the driver is a fully configurable Motec digital display with integrated lap timing and race diagnostics, paired with an all-new quick-release steering wheel. Additional race-derived equipment includes a built-in pneumatic air-jack system, a digital rearview mirror with an integrated backup camera, an OMP electronic fire-suppression system and a driver helmet cooling system engineered to maintain comfort during extended track sessions. It is a very different interpretation of automotive luxury. Rather than surrounding occupants with traditional luxury materials and convenience features, the GXR-Evo delivers exclusivity through specialized equipment, bespoke engineering and the meticulous execution of components designed around the driving experience. Even the car’s electrical architecture receives attention through a new strategic partnership between Gunther Werks and OPTIMA Batteries. OPTIMA Batteries will serve as the exclusive provider of lithium batteries for future Gunther Werks projects. A Bespoke Simulator for Every Owner For the 15 collectors who secure a GXR-Evo, the experience extends beyond the car itself. Each owner will receive a bespoke racing simulator designed in collaboration with MYSIM. Individually commissioned and numbered, each simulator is hand-welded from 6061-T6 aluminum and clad in carbon-fiber panels that mirror the construction of the GXR-Evo. The steering wheel is engineered specifically for simulator use while matching the wheel in the GXR-Evo, creating continuity between the virtual and physical driving experiences. More significantly, each simulator is precisely configured to mirror the dynamics of its individual vehicle. Owners can therefore refine their skills in the virtual environment before taking their cars to the circuit. It is a particularly fitting extension of the GXR-Evo philosophy. The car is not presented simply as a collectible object but as a machine intended to be driven, explored and mastered. Goodwood stands out as one of the greatest automotive celebrations on the planet, but it’s also become a proving ground for manufacturers. For both enthusiasts and brands, the first Goodwood Festival of Speed experience is often the most memorable, which will be the case for Gunther Werks this year. The Huntington Beach-based atelier is bringing its very best to the global stage with its European debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The California company will showcase the new Project F-26 and its 993-based Turbo, giving those in attendance a firsthand look at the future of analogue Porsches.Making the biggest impression will likely be Project F-26, Gunther Werks’ limited-production Slantnose-inspired build that combines 1980s Porsche racing influence with modern-day performance. Limited to just 26 examples worldwide, the F-26 features a twin-turbocharged 4.0L flat-six producing 1,067 horsepower and 750 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a six-speed manual transmission to keep the driver fully involved. With a lightweight 2,700-pound curb weight, motorsport-derived suspension, and ultra-aggressive aero, Project F-26 was built to attack the famous Goodwood hill climb. Behind the wheel will be racing veteran Formula One, NASCAR, and rallycross driver Scott Speed.Joining the Project F-26 will be the Gunther Werks Turbo, another showcase of the brand’s approach to modernizing the Porsche 911 without losing its raw character. Based on the 993-generation, the limited-run Turbo delivers 850 horsepower from a 4.0L twin-turbo flat-six paired with a six-speed manual gearbox. The focus remains on creating a more engaging driving experience through sharper suspension, upgraded braking systems, and serious chassis development.The arrival of Gunther Werks at Goodwood Festival of Speed highlights the growing passion and appreciation for bespoke Porsche restorations. While the event celebrates everything from historic race cars to the latest hypercars, the hill climb remains the ultimate stage for manufacturers and builders to prove what their machines can do.
