McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The Fort Worth Stockyards The story of the Fort Worth Stockyards begins with cattle: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it became one of the nation’s most important livestock trading centers thanks to its location along major cattle routes and railroad connections. The arrival of the Union Stockyards in 1902 transformed the area into a bustling hub where millions of cattle, hogs and sheep passed through annually, earning Fort Worth the nickname “Cowtown.” At its peak, the Stockyards represented the heart of the American livestock industry, connecting Texas ranchers with markets across the country. The district’s famous livestock exchange, packing plants and rail infrastructure helped establish Fort Worth as a major commercial center while preserving the cowboy culture that defined the region. Today, the Stockyards have evolved into a premier entertainment, dining and leisure destination while maintaining their historic character. Original brick streets, restored buildings and iconic landmarks now sit alongside luxury hotels, chef-driven restaurants, boutique shopping and live entertainment venues. Visitors can still witness the twice-daily Fort Worth Herd cattle drive, featuring Texas Longhorns moving through the historic streets, offering a living connection to the area’s ranching past. We took in an evening of Professional Bullriding at Cowtown Coliseum, as Ram is an official partner of PBR, which is as cowboy an experience as it gets! Another recommendation is Tannahill’s Music Hall & Lounge, a 1000-capacity live music venue in a historic Mule Barn. How to get there Fort Worth is easily accessible from across the country through Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs located roughly 25 miles northeast of the Stockyards. From the airport, the drive takes about 30 minutes via Interstate 35W, bringing visitors directly into the heart of one of Texas’ most historic districts. For those arriving by private aircraft, Fort Worth is also home to several executive aviation facilities, including nearby Meacham International Airport, making the city a convenient destination for luxury travelers and automotive enthusiasts. And while the fastest route leads straight to the heart of Cowtown, the journey itself can be part of the experience. Scenic drives through the surrounding Texas countryside offer a reminder that Fort Worth’s identity was built on open range, ranching heritage and the cattle trails that helped shape the American West. The Truck Ram has long understood that Texas is more than just another regional market – it is the heart of the American pickup landscape. According to Ram model line manager Brant Combs, one out of every six pickup trucks sold in the United States is purchased in Texas, making the state responsible for roughly 15 to 20 percent of the brand’s entire U.S. retail sales volume for the Ram 1500. “Trucks used to be utilitarian workhorses, just something you used to get your work done,” Combs tells us. “But, today, it’s such a huge market, and a competitive one, so you need breadth and a truck for every kind of Texan.” That demand has shaped Ram’s approach to building trucks that reflect the diverse lifestyles of the state’s buyers – from ranchers and entrepreneurs to luxury-minded customers who see their pickup as an extension of personal style. In 2002, Ram introduced the Ram 1500 Lone Star, the industry’s first Texas-specific trim level, creating a model tailored specifically to the tastes and traditions of the Lone Star State. The Drive I start my day in Ram’s Texas-specific workhorse, the Lone Star, and feel straightaway that I’m fitting in with my surroundings. I head to Benbrook Stables – a family-owned and operated horse ranch a few miles outside of the city. Visitors can enjoy an unforgettable horseback riding experience, through scenic lake trails and gorgeous vistas to beautiful shaded creek crossings – but you must make reservations in advance. You’ll find the folks there are really friendly, and the horses are calm in nature. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Hotel Drover, along Chisholm Trail Parkway towards the middle of Fort Worth and then pick up I20W to head south-west to Benbrook. One thing to notice straight away about Fort Worth: It’s home to production of the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. The stealth fighter jets are assembled at the historic Air Force Plant 4, located on the grounds of the nearby Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base, and you’ll see them all day buzzing across the sky, occasionally pitching vertical and afterburning into the blue yonder – it’s quite the sight. While at the farm, I leave the horses and the spectacular Texas Longhorn cows to sample some true horsepower, taking Ram’s 1500 Tungsten out for a spin around the locale. Benbrook Lake is where the Clear Fork and the West Fork of the Trinity River join, the reservoir’s surrounding roads provide a great test for the Tungsten’s air suspension, as they undulate with some hilly topography. It provides an impeccable ride, absorbing the road while harnessing the output from its mighty 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged Hurricane I6 engine. On the quiet roads, I could really push beyond what a truck of this size should be capable of. After returning to the ranch, and posing for a photo with a couple of new-found friends (above, who are real and not statues if you were wondering), for the return journey to Hotel Drover, I jump into Ram’s Longhorn – the true king of cowboy luxury. Straight away, the filigree designs that are stitched into the comfortable brown leather seats really leaps out, as does the cool motif on the central console – even the rear of the front seats features belt-buckle-inspired detailing. With more than enough headroom to accommodate my newly acquired Stetson hat, I mosey on back to Cowtown truly feeling a part of the culture. Driving Destinations: Pikes Peak in a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

Welcome to “Driving Destinations” – a new column where we will feature exciting travel itineraries for driving adventures on the world’s most iconic roads. Fittingly, to celebrate America’s Semiquincentennial this year, we kick off Driving Destinations with a dream route up Pikes Peak, the annual site of the nation’s second-longest running motorsport event known affectionately as “The Race to the Clouds.” This year’s edition runs on Sunday, June 21. Pikes Peak was actually named after Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike, who first spotted the snow-covered summit from Eastern Colorado in 1806. The spectacular view from the top even inspired Katherine Lee Bates to write the lyrics to “America the Beautiful” in 1893. By 1916, amid the advent of early motoring, what’s officially known as The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), presented by Gran Turismo, was first founded. Since then, the 156-turn race over 12.42 miles has paused only for World Wars I and II. Originally dirt, the climb from the start line at 9,390 feet to the 14,115-foot summit featured longer and longer stretches of asphalt before being fully paved in 2011. Times for each year’s “King of the Mountain” grew accordingly quicker, until Volkswagen set the longstanding record of 7:57.148 in 2018 with Romain Dumas behind the wheel of its all-electric prototype. Every year, Pikes Peak presents a unique challenge because the Race to the Clouds often runs on days with inconsistent foul weather. Even for tourists and amateurs daydreaming of driving top speed to the summit, an adventure to Pikes Peak always provides memories sure to last a lifetime. How to get there Flights run all year long into Colorado Springs, a bustling city with a half-million residents nestled below lush foothills that give way to towering mountains just to the west. More airlines fly into Denver International Airport, though, and from there, an easy drive of about an hour and a half due south on Interstate 25 will reach Pikes Peak. Or, to enjoy the journey as much as the destination, make a jaunt up into the mountain roads and take the longer route – weather permitting, of course. Lodging Only one place makes sense for lodging while on a true Colorado Pikes Peak experience: The Broadmoor resort, as suggested in the hillclimb’s official name. This 5,000-acre complex was founded in 1918 by Spencer and Julie Penrose, and still lives up to the same old-world East Coast charm with 784 rooms, suites, and cottages available year-round. The facility also houses two championship golf courses, which host the US Women’s Open and the PGA Champions series for golfers age 50 and up. Don’t get distracted by lovely fairways and views of the mountains, though, as the grass can be very fast and tricky at this elevation. For those who prefer a bit more relaxation, The Broadmoor also boasts a 43,000-square-foot spa, a central lake, and the popular pool for recreational swimming – even a movie theater on site. Across the street, the Penrose Heritage Museum celebrates the original cog railway that was built for tourists visiting Pikes Peak as early as 1891. But the same Spencer Penrose also founded the first official hillclimb race, so the museum also houses memorabilia, race cars, motorcycles, and vintage carriages. Dining The Broadmoor boasts no fewer than nine restaurants, alongside multiple bars and cafes, on the property. But for more of a classic Wild West meal, drive a few minutes into downtown Colorado Springs to visit MacKenzie’s Chop House, a local institution beneath the Alamo Building on the main drag of South Tejon Street. MacKenzie’s occupies a basement across from the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum, formerly the site of the El Paso County Courthouse from 1903 to 1973. Hollywood filmmakers still shoot at the Pioneers Museum to capture that quintessential Western look, but legend tells of catacombs beneath Tejon Street that led straight from the Alamo Building’s basement to the judge’s chambers. After being ravaged by fires in the 1970s, as part of an urban renewal effort, the basement restaurant transitioned through generational ownership until 1997, when it was reopened as MacKenzie’s. Plush with rich woods and supple leather upholstery, there’s nowhere better in Colorado Springs to enjoy a big porterhouse and a dry gin martini. The Car Similarly, only one car makes sense to drive up America’s mountain: America’s supercar, the eighth-generation Chevrolet Corvette ZR1. By bolting two enormous 76-millimeter turbochargers onto the track-focused Z06, Chevy effectively built a perfect tool for racing at elevation. At 14,000 feet, the thin air only contains about 60% of the combustible oxygen as at sea level. This year, Chevrolet will race both a ZR1 and a hybridized ZR1X up the Pikes Peak International Hillclimb. Though the bombastic 1,250 horsepower and all-wheel-drive traction of the ZR1X might well take a new production car record – as usual, weather permitting – the lighter ZR1 rides a bit smoother, making it ideal for a longer drive through the Rocky Mountains. Just don’t plan to carry golf clubs and luggage; the C8’s small rear trunk can hold one or the other, but not both! The Drive From The Broadmoor, a full day’s drive to take in everything Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs have to offer should realistically start fairly early – both to beat the frequent afternoon thunderstorms as well as tourist traffic. Ideally, head north to the Garden of the Gods first, for a short hike in the crisp morning air where spectacular rock formations frame Pikes Peak, basking in the glowy sunrise. Next, climb back in the ZR1 and head up toward Cascade, CO, to the toll booth at the base of the official Pikes Peak Highway. The drive from here snakes about 19 miles uphill, but a wise decision will be to stop at the race’s official start line and try to catch your breath at “just” 9,290 feet of elevation. Try to envision race car drivers strapping in for one of the most dangerous courses in the world – arguably second only to the Isle of Man TT. (Note: motorcycle competition ended at Pikes Peak in 2019 after the tragic death of Carlin Dunne near the summit.) In the ZR1, switch into sport mode to rev up that V8 and pump in some turbo boost, because from here the road grade turns sharply up toward the ranger station nestled into a deep basin at Glen Cove. Picturesque switchbacks climb up toward Devil’s Playground, a promontory at 12,780 feet. Here, Pikes Peak starts to truly tower over the surrounding countryside, though a long trek across a saddle to the true summit still awaits. At the very top, take a break to check out the view steep downhill toward Colorado Springs, or westward across the Rockies. The cog railway also meets up here, at a visitor center where most guests stop for a bite of famous donuts cooked with a special recipe for elevation – you can’t take them with you, or they will collapse from the increased air pressure on the way downhill. For those feeling sufficiently acclimated, the chance to hop out at Devil’s on the descent for another quick hike might seem fun, but truly take care, as the lack of oxygen catches up quick. Once past Devil’s and headed down the switchbacks again, don’t forget to downshift and let the twin-turbos help that V8 do some engine braking. The mountain air can start to smell stifling as less experienced drivers burn their pads to the backing. In fact, so much so that the rangers at Glen Cove line up with laser thermometers to check brake rotor temps in the hopes of stopping anyone who might risk boiling their brake fluid. Brake issues shouldn’t crop up in the ZR1, given the factory carbon-ceramics. And with a bit of luck, hopefully missing the worst of tourist traffic will allow some exploration of the C8’s excellent mid-engine handling while winding up and down Pikes Peak. About halfway through the descent, the air starts to feel thick and soupy, rich with oxygen once again. The perfect time to rejuvenate, then, after a long and picturesque adventure in the stunning Colorado countryside, by finishing up the day with a big steak and martinis at MacKenzie’s before heading back to The Broadmoor. And maybe even catch a classic silver screen Western playing in the theater before bed.
