Maserati Classiche was established in 2021 with a mission to preserve and celebrate the decades of classics that have characterized the century-old manufacturer. Part of the BOTTEGAFUORISERIE umbrella, Maserati Classiche’s flagship service is its Certification of Authenticity, the product of an in-depth analysis of a classic Maserati’s technical characteristics, historical documentation, and archived records by a committee of experts. The latest vehicle Maserati Classiche is showcasing that earned a certification is a 1970 Ghibli SS Coupé, an example with a particularly special history.

Originally finished in Oro Longchamps, the car now wears a Giallo Fly exterior and was preserved by none other than the Maserati family. It retains its original black leather interior and is powered by a 4.9-liter V8 engine with 355 horsepower, which is sent through a five-speed manual ZF transmission to a top speed of 174 mph. An icon of Maserati’s cherished Gran Turismo lineage, this Ghibli SS Coupé, chassis number AM115/49*1948*, is one of the most storied examples of the gorgeous grand tourer. Its certification from Maserati Classiche highlights the brand’s preserved connection to the family that founded it, and brings another iconic car into the portfolio of Maserati Classiche-certified vehicles.

The Ghibli itself is celebrating its 60th anniversary, as the model was originally unveiled on November 3, 1966, at the 1966 Turin Motor Show. Penned by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro for Carrozzeria Ghia, the coupe boasts stunning performance, a low-slung silhouette, impressive performance for its time, and refined grand touring character. The Ghibli’s debut marked a turning point for Maserati’s design language, and after the coupe debuted, the Spyder followed in 1969, which was then followed by the Ghibli SS. An exemplary Italian grand tourer, Henry Ford II purchased one, which was put on display in Ford’s Product Development Center in Detroit to inspire the brand’s own designers.
