McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Maserati is celebrating a century of its presence in the world of motorsport, as well as the centenary of its legendary Trident emblem this year. What began in 1926 has become a cherished legacy of Italian luxury performance cars, as well as racing icons that have written chapters of motorsport history. This decade, however, has marked an exciting resurgence in Maserati’s motorsport efforts, with the MC20 supercar becoming the basis for Maserati’s GT2 racer, along with the street-legal GT2 Stradale, and the customer track-only MCXtrema. However, another new day is dawning for Maserati’s racing legacy, and it comes from the latest generation of the GranTurismo, Maserati’s gorgeous touring coupe. It’s called Project GT4, a GranTurismo-based GT racer aimed at taking on one of the most dynamic racing categories. Its goal: to sit alongside the Maserati GT2 and use the experience Maserati Corse gained with the supercar to get back on the track in 2028. About Project GT4, Maserati Corse’s head, Vincent Biard, said, “Project GT4 represents a natural step in the evolution of the Maserati Corse program and completes our vision for the future of GT racing. On the back of the experience gained with the Maserati GT2, this project was created with the aim of bringing all the technical, sporting and operational know-how developed in recent years to the GT4 category, while maintaining a strong bond with the New GranTurismo on which it is based.” <- Gallery -> Taking full advantage of the style and engineering seen in the production Maserati GranTurismo, Project GT4’s powertrain and body are derived directly from the road car. Modified from it are aerodynamic components, a revised interior, a rear-wheel drive architecture, and other tweaks. The car’s suspension comes from the Maserati GranTurismo Trofeo, and the car’s dedicated racing components include a front splitter, front dive planes, a special hood, a dedicated braking system, a roll cage, 18-inch wheels, and more. Previewed at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, Maserati’s new Project GT4 features a special livery at the event, with a large Trident spanning the length of the car, and 100 smaller blue Tridents throughout, a reference to the 100th anniversary of the Trident emblem. Meanwhile, a white front fascia is a reference to classic Maserati racers, and touches of blue and yellow serve as an ode to Maserati’s home city of Modena, Italy. With Project GT4, Maserati not only plans to expand its racing presence and bolster the GT2, but also to continue a legacy that was previously carried by the Maserati Trofeo Light GT4, which was based on the Maserati GranSport. For over a century, Maserati has been mastering a specific art form: the Italian grand tourer. Now, as its iconic Trident badge celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, the Modena-based house is executing a bold pivot toward the future – without losing the soul that has defined it for 112 years. The latest iterations of the GranTurismo, GranCabrio, and Grecale for the 2027 model year represent a profound evolution. Purest Expression of a Grand Tourer At the core of the brand's identity sit the GranTurismo and GranCabrio – two machines engineered for crossing continents at high speeds with unmistakable Italian flair. While the GranTurismo remains the definitive luxury coupe, the GranCabrio translates that experience into a proper four-seat, open-air cockpit, insulated by a bespoke fabric soft top engineered for perfect acoustic and thermal serenity. Maserati has dialed up both the aesthetics and the muscle for the new model year: The flagship Trofeo variants now extract a fierce 582 horsepower from Maserati’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 Nettuno engine – a 40-hp bump over the previous year. Armed with 479 lb-ft of torque, the engine utilizes Formula 1-derived pre-chamber combustion for immediate, explosive throttle response. For those who view a luxury car as a canvas, Maserati’s Fuoriserie customization program has been dramatically expanded. For the eco-conscious luxury buyer, the all-electric Grecale Folgore sees major software updates, boasting enhanced range via optimized aerodynamics and smarter energy algorithms. A new, cinematic online configurator uses photorealistic digital rendering to match the in-dealership design studio experience. Maserati Recaps Meccanica Lirica Celebrations In Modena

Maserati recaps a triumphant homecoming. In an important move for the historic Italian luxury brand, Maserati announced that it was bringing the production of two of its most iconic models, the GranTurismo and the GranCabrio, to its historic home of Modena, Italy. Imbuing its luxury performance grand tourers with Made-in-Italy craftsmanship excellence and the storied legacy of Maserati’s Viale Ciro Menotti plant, the models’ production returning to Modena is an important milestone, and certainly a reason to celebrate for Maserati. As such, Maserati brought a series of Maserati Meccanica Lirica celebrations to the city of Modena, bringing not only the brand and its employees to the celebration, but also the entire city out to welcome the production of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio home. The week of celebration opened at one of the most iconic venues in the city: Teatro Comunale Modena Pavarotti-Freni, where in collaboration with its audio partner Sonus faber, Maserati put on a unique performance that told the story of Maserati, involving the entire theater in the narrative. A dinner in the foyer of the theater concluded the inaugural event, with food from the Michelin-starred Massimo Bottura. The next day, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at the plant, where guests got the opportunity to to see the new features of the plant and the new assembly lines for the GranCabrio and GranTurismo, and also see the one-off Maserati GranTurismo Meccanica Lirica and GranCabrio Meccanica Lirica cars. Over the weekend, the Trident Experience, a two-day event, showcased Maserati excellence to over 100 European Maserati customers and Maserati Club Italia members. The city’s Piazza Roma played host to 50 Maseratis, the oldest of which was a 1959 Maserati GT Spyder 3500, with a special performance from Roberto Bolle at the plant later in the evening. A parade of 60 historic and modern Maseratis took place the next day, traversing across the city of Modena to the Panini Museum. The parade included ‘90s Ghiblis, a Sebring, an Indy, the MC20, and more. The parade reached its final destination: the Modena Autodromo. There, customers experienced test drives and hot laps in cars like the new Maserati GranTurismo and the GT2 Stradale. Throughout the city, Maserati took over iconic locations to celebrate its production homecoming, marking a triumphant return for the entire city of Modena with Maserati Meccanica Lirica. Maserati Unveils new "Meccanica Lirica" One-Offs

Maserati celebrates the reinforcement of its Italian heritage with two one-offs. Maserati is one of the most historic Italian luxury car manufacturers, with well over a century of heritage behind it, including motorsport heroes and some of the most coveted and celebrated cars of all time. The GranTurismo and GranCabrio represent the latest evolution of Maserati’s decades-long legacy of grand touring masterpieces, and Maserati has officially returned the production of the grand touring pair to the brand’s Modena plant, highlighting its commitment to its rich heritage and Made-in-Italy excellence. The milestone deserves celebration, and Maserati is doing exactly that with a Maserati Meccanica Lirica series of events in collaboration with Sonus faber as a main partner. The events bring together Maserati’s employees, customers, and the entire city of Modena together to celebrate the homecoming of two of Maserati’s most important models. However, a major highlight of the celebration is the debut of two special one-off Maseratis and a Fuoriserie customization pack. Those two one-off Maseratis are the new Maserati GranTurismo Meccanica Lirica One-Off and the new Maserati GranCabrio Meccanica Lirica One-Off, both based on the Trofeo versions of the GranTurismo and GranCabrio. Inspired by Modena’s famed opera house, Rosso Velluto and Oro Lirico are their exterior colors. Special 21-inch wheels, a gold Trident, and even a custom exhaust set the one-offs apart from their standard counterparts. The interiors combine leather, Alcantara, and real wood, with commemorative badging highlighting the special edition, as well. Inspired by the one-off models, Maserati has also debuted the Meccanica Lirica Pack from Fuoriserie, with many of the features and colors seen on the one-offs available upon request, including for the all-electric Folgore variants of the cars, save the exhaust, of course. Maserati rings in 110 years with a special edition. For over a century, Maserati has represented the greatest in Italian automotive luxury, design, performance, and motorsport. Today, Maserati boasts supercars, sports cars, and luxury SUVs, all with gorgeous looks, exciting driving character, luxurious features, and cutting-edge performance innovation. However, it’s the Trident brand’s grand tourer, the GranTurismo, that has received special treatment to celebrate Maserati’s milestone 110th anniversary since its founding in 1914. Inspired by fine wine, Maserati’s bespoke creation graces the stage. Recently, Maserati made its first appearance at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille, one of France’s most prestigious car shows. The event celebrates the best of automotive history, as well as the most exclusive luxury and exotic cars of the present day, and Maserati brought examples of both from its lineup to be showcased and celebrated at the beautiful château event. At the center of Maserati’s presence at Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille was the bespoke rendition of Maserati’s electric open-top grand tourer: the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Tignanello. Created to honor the 50th anniversary of the Tignanello wine, the bespoke car features special touches inspired by the iconic aesthetic of vineyards and winemaking. After being presented in Napa Valley, California, the bespoke electric grand tourer was unveiled in person for the first time at Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille. Alongside the new bespoke car, a test drive session was also held for the latest cars in Maserati’s lineup, including the GranTurismo and GranCabrio Trofeo and Folgore, MC20 Cielo and Grecale Folgore. As part of the concours events within the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille, many stunning historic Maseratis took part. These included the Maserati A6G54 built by Frua and Zagato, the Maserati 5000GT, the Maserati Quattroporte, and the Maserati 5000GT. Maserati revived its iconic GranTurismo luxury performance coupe recently, and with it also came the GranTurismo Folgore, the first all-electric model revealed by the historic manufacturer. However, along with it came its open-top counterpart, the GranCabrio, and its all-electric counterpart, the GranCabrio Folgore. Fully-Electric 2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore Unveiled

It's been less than two months since Italian carmaker Maserati unveiled the GranTurismo's convertible sibling. In its latest announcement, however, the marque unveiled the fully electric variant that runs alongside it, the 2025 Maserati GranCabrio Folgore. Like the electric GT the carmaker announced back in late 2022, the GC Folgore rides on the same modular architecture as its coupe counterpart but adds a folding soft top while retaining its sleek and curvy bodywork. Beneath the metal, the GranCabrio Folgore and the GranTurismo are nearly identical. They count on an 800-volt electric architecture, which feeds three electric motors: one up front and two in the back. Power comes from a 92.5-kilowatt-hour battery pack, of which 83 kWh are usable and can charge at up to 270 kilowatts. This allows it to jump from 10 to 80 percent in roughly 18 minutes and cover a maximum distance of around 230 miles. On the performance side, the Maserati GranCabrio Folgore produces 751 horsepower, while a temporary MaxBoost mode temporarily bumps that output up to 818 HP. Flat out, the Trident's latest convertible can sprint to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds, just a tenth of a second behind the coupe, blast up to 124 mph in 9.1, and top out at 180 mph. The addition of its battery pack, along the roof's folding mechanism and the GC's additional strengthening bumps up its weight over its Coupe counterpart, but only by 176 lb, which considering this cabrio's 5,159 curb weight, is a marginal increase. It's that convertible roof, however, that makes the new Maserati GranCabrio Folgore one of the most interesting entrants to the electric vehicle world yet, as one of the first luxury grand touring EV convertibles to hit the market. In fact, the GranCabrio's bragging rights include being the first fully-electric convertible in the luxury segment, and being the fastest fully-electric convertible on the market. Being a soft top, Maserati says that the folded top is compact enough to leave enough room for luggage for four, and the roof is operable at speeds of up to 31 mph, and opens in a matter of only 14 seconds. A neck warming system also ensures the GranCabrio Folgore provides year-round comfort for open-top drives, making it an engaging, quick and luxurious grand tourer, all while being fully electric. The luxurious electric convertible is launched with an exclusive color: Liquid Rose Gold, paired with a Titan Grey fabric roof and an interior upholstered in Denim and Ice with contrasting stitching, showcasing the stunning bespoke abilities of Maserati's Fuoriserie customization program.
