McLaren Confirms its First-Ever Luxury Performance SUV
McLaren Automotive will enter new territory: the British supercar marque has confirmed plans to launch a luxury performance SUV, marking the first time in its history that it will produce a vehicle beyond its established portfolio. The announcement forms part of a $673 million investment in McLaren’s UK manufacturing, engineering and operations, funded as part of a larger commitment from shareholder L’IMAD, a sovereign investor of the Government of Abu Dhabi. The investment is intended to accelerate development of McLaren’s next generation of models while expanding the company’s production capabilities in Britain. For McLaren, the SUV represents a significant expansion of its future portfolio. The company says it is “building a complete portfolio around the supercar,” with products intentionally and carefully segmented with the goal of maximizing brand value, desirability and client loyalty. McLaren has never built a production car with more than two seats, making the forthcoming SUV a significant departure for the marque. Codenamed P47, the model is expected to be a performance-focused luxury utility vehicle roughly the size of a Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT. It will be a four-door, five-seat model combining supercar-inspired styling with everyday usability, while targeting the ultra-luxury performance segment occupied by models such as the Aston Martin DBX, Ferrari Purosangue and Lamborghini Urus. The P47 is expected to use a hybridized V8 powertrain with all-wheel drive, with its development focused on dynamic performance as well as practicality. The SUV is not expected to reach showrooms until around 2028, with McLaren also signaling plans for at least one new model launch each year through that period. The SUV will reportedly be joined by another new McLaren before then. Dealer briefings have described a mid-engine hybrid supercar, codenamed P34, targeting approximately 810 horsepower from a twin-turbocharged V6 and potentially arriving for 2027. Speaking about the $673 million investment, Nick Collins, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Group Holdings and McLaren Automotive, said: “This investment gives us the platform to grow, develop and build on what makes us distinctive, while investing in the people, technologies and products that will keep us competitive for decades to come.” A New Chapter for McLaren McLaren’s fresh $673 million funding will create an integrated UK operation spanning design, engineering, advanced manufacturing and vehicle development. It has recently opened a design and innovation center at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester and a testing and vehicle development facility in the Midlands. Together with its headquarters in Woking and carbon-fiber manufacturing and research facility in South Yorkshire, the sites will connect McLaren’s operations from design through advanced manufacturing. For the first time in McLaren Automotive’s history, its future powertrains will also be designed and built in-house in the UK, beginning with two new engines and transmissions. The company says this capability will support its hybrid engine strategy, building on its pioneering use of hybrid technology, which began with the McLaren P1. The investment will also allow McLaren to expand production at the McLaren Production Centre in Woking and increase vehicle output to accommodate its future model portfolio. Jassem Al Zaabi, Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of L’IMAD, said: “Over the past 20 months, L’IMAD has worked closely with McLaren Automotive’s management team, supporting the business in sharpening its strategic direction and positioning itself for long-term growth. This investment reflects our confidence in its potential and our commitment to backing the business through its next chapter, building on the heritage, engineering excellence, and distinctive brand that has defined McLaren for more than six decades.” The Luxury Portfolio Expands McLaren says its strategy is designed to expand beyond the supercar while carefully maintaining the brand’s value and desirability. The newly confirmed performance SUV will join that broader portfolio as it enters a new category. The investment is expected to support at least 1,000 new direct and indirect jobs across McLaren’s UK operations by 2032, while safeguarding existing roles. McLaren’s UK manufacturing workforce is expected to double, supported by new apprenticeships. The company also expects its plans to support up to 3,000 additional jobs across its supply chain. The program will further strengthen McLaren’s expertise in lightweighting, carbon fiber and advanced manufacturing while securing intellectual property and production capabilities in the UK. Founded by Bruce McLaren in 1963, McLaren has long defined itself through lightweight engineering, carbon-fiber technology and high-performance racing cars – before diversifying into production road cars in 1992 with the iconic F1. Last month, it revealed a new concept car – McL 6GT – during Monterey Car Week, a reimagining of 1969’s McLaren M6GT road car that was built by Bruce McLaren, which he used as his daily driver, shortly before his death in 1970. Now, with its first performance SUV officially confirmed, the company is preparing to apply its principles to an entirely fresh category alongside its upcoming new supercars.
