McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Mezger's Masterpiece: The 997 Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0

The Porsche 997 GT3 RS was already a track-focused icon before Porsche Motorsport decided to up the ante with the limited-production RS 4.0. While the 997.1 GT3 RS came with a 3.6L engine and the 997.2 GT3 RS bumped displacement to 3.8L, it was the 4.0L variant that truly cemented its place in Porsche history. Launched in 2011, the GT3 RS 4.0 was a swan song for the 997 generation and a final farewell to the legendary Mezger engine in its most extreme naturally aspirated form. Just 600 examples were assembled and rolled off the production line in Stuttgart, making it rarer than most collectors and enthusiasts might assume. Compared to the 3.8, the 4.0 was more powerful, more responsive, and even more track-ready, thanks to a long list of motorsport-derived parts and lightweight tricks. Limited Production & Soaring Value With only 600 examples produced worldwide, the 997 GT3 RS 4.0 has become one of the most collectible modern Porsches on the market today. 448-Mile Purple Carbon 2005 Porsche Carrera GT For Sale

When the Porsche Carrera GT debuted in 2004, it represented a completely different direction for the Stuttgart brand. Built around a carbon-fiber monocoque and powered by a Formula 1-derived V10, it became a halo supercar for Porsche. The only downside was that the Carrera GT was surprisingly straightforward to personalize, with buyers having only a handful of exterior colors and interior combinations to choose from. Today, with the Carrera GT firmly cemented as a blue-chip collector car, Porsche is giving owners the chance to revisit the configuration process with Porsche Sonderwunsch and Porsche Classic, and personalize their cars in ways that weren't possible when they were new.The team at Merit Partners of Atlanta, GA, is excited to showcase this 2005 Porsche Carrera GT as one of those bespoke factory re-comissions, now for sale on duPont REGISTRY. Stripped down in Stuttgart to its bare carbon monocoque, body panels find their way to the paint booth while all interior pieces are delivered to the upholstery department. Venturing outside Porsche’s standard five factory colors for the Carrera GT, the owner chose a fully exposed Amethyst Purple-tinted carbon fiber, setting its lightweight carbon fiber construction on center stage. The headlight cleaners, wheels, engine cover, side blinkers, grilles, and badging were also refinished in Slate Grey GALLERY-EMBED Inside, the cabin received the same bespoke treatment from the Sonderwunsch team, layering every inch of the interior in Slate Grey Alcantara and Speed yellow stitching, extending to the steering wheel, doors, A-pillars, and lower dash. Matte carbon fiber replaces nearly all of the interior trim, including the Carrera GT's signature wooden manual shift knob. The carbon bucket seats have been completely redesigned with Slate Grey seat bolsters and headrests, Slate Grey Alcantara inserts, and Speed Yellow seatbelts. That exact styling finds its way into the frunk, where the Carrera GT’s removable roof is stored. The most impressive work is completed in the engine bay, where an extensive, factory-backed engine overhaul effectively resets this Carrera GT to a documented “zero-mile condition.” The engine powering Porsche’s halo supercar is a 5.7L naturally aspirated V10 derived from a cancelled Formula 1 project and a shelved Le Mans prototype, producing 612 horsepower and a screaming exhaust pitch. Mated to a six-speed manual transmission, it remains one of Porsche’s greatest analog supercars. Porsche Unveils $275,000 911 Challenge Entry-Level Customer Race Car

Porsche is expanding its customer motorsport family with a new race car designed to make the transition from road-going performance to competition driving more accessible. The new Porsche 911 Challenge combines the DNA of the current 911 GT3 road car with motorsport safety equipment and competition-ready driving dynamics, while emphasizing reduced operating and spare-parts costs. Porsche Motorsport North America is offering the new race car to 2027 Porsche one-make entrants for $275,000, including import and delivery to the United States. From the 2027 season, the 911 Challenge can compete in numerous one-make series worldwide. The 911 Challenge completes Porsche’s current 911-based GT race car family as its new entry-level model. Unlike the Cup race car unveiled in August 2025, the Challenge uses a significant amount of production-based GT3 technology, creating a more familiar connection for drivers moving from a roadgoing GT3 to dedicated circuit competition. “Since their introduction, the roadgoing GT3 models have shaped Porsche’s identity as a sports car manufacturer like almost no other model range,” said Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “They are conceived and developed in close collaboration with motorsport. With the 911 Challenge, this tradition is being expanded to include a model that allows new customer groups to experience the thrill of motorsport in a 911.” That production-car DNA is particularly evident in the drivetrain and cockpit technology. The 911 Challenge uses the high-revving 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine largely derived from the production GT3, producing 508 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and reaching the same 9,000-rpm redline as the roadgoing model. Power is sent through a seven-speed PDK gearbox, with both automatic and manual gear changes available through steering-wheel paddles. The technology extends beyond the powertrain. The Challenge features the GT3 RS steering wheel with enhanced racing-specific functions, air conditioning and adjustable driver-assistance systems, including ABS, traction control and Electronic Stability Control. Variable dynamics systems also include multi-stage adjustable Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus. “For customers who already enjoy tracking their GT3, the step into a dedicated Porsche race car becomes more natural and familiar,” Volker Holzmeyer, CEO of Porsche Motorsport North America, said. “At the same time, it connects them directly to Porsche’s 911-based race car ladder, making the progression through our motorsport portfolio easier and more accessible.” Underneath, however, the 911 Challenge makes a decisive shift toward motorsport. Its shock absorbers use a motorsport-specific characteristic curve, while the standard anti-roll bar is adjustable in three positions. Racing slicks are mounted on 18-inch wheels using the standard five-bolt pattern, while steel racing brake discs measure 380 mm in diameter at both the front and rear. The cabin makes the car’s purpose unmistakable. Sound-deadening materials, carpets and trim have been removed, replaced by a welded-in roll cage designed to reinforce the structure and enhance crash protection. A 29-gallon (110-liter) FIA FT3 fuel cell, adjustable racing bucket seat, six-point harness and fire-extinguishing system complete the safety-focused specification. An integrated three-jack air-jack system is standard, while an FIA-certified rain light, integrated hood quick-release fasteners and a mechanically adjustable rear wing with four positions further emphasize the car’s competition-ready character. The 911 Challenge is not street legal. Instead, Porsche positions it as a dedicated circuit machine for racing, testing, driver development, track days and private motorsport activities, with broader availability to enthusiasts expected later in 2027. In the United States, the car is eligible for the Porsche Sprint and Endurance Challenge North America by Yokohama, the Porsche Sprint Trophy Porsche Club of America by Yokohama and the recently announced Porsche Sprint Trophy Porsche Owners Club, subject to applicable regulations. How Porsche Pushed Engineering Boundaries With A Spherical Fuel Tank

Porsche is known for bringing forth performance-oriented engineering innovations throughout its long history, whether that be in its use of transaxles, variable geometry turbochargers, or hybrid technology. However, one of its most unique solutions took place in the world of motorsport, specifically in the 909 Bergspyder. The lightest-ever race car from Porsche, made in 1968, the 909 Bergspyder weighed around 400 kilograms, and it used some radical solutions to achieve that incredibly scant figure. During the European Hill Climb Championship, on the Gaisberg mountain in Salzburg, Austria, Porsche introduced the 909 Bergspyder as a masterpiece of motorsport engineering. While the 909 Bergspyder featured several highly innovative parts, one of the most intriguing was its fuel tank, which was sphere-shaped, twice the size of a soccer ball, and held in by three straps. It was made of thin titanium with a rubber bladder, and it was designed to operate without a fuel lift pump, reducing the weight by an impressive seven kilograms. Along with that unusual solution, the 909 Bergspyder also positioned the seat shell, engine, and five-speed transmission far towards the front of the car, improving the weight distribution while the differential was all the way at the back. Despite this radical innovation and painstaking engineering, the 909 Bergspyder only ran twice, as Porsche focused more on the World Sportscar Championship and Le Mans. Only two Porsche 909 Bergspyders were made, and they were the only cars that Porsche used the spherical fuel tank on. However, the unique engineering solution lives on as a symbol of the dedication and ingenuity given to the world of motorsport, which then goes on to inform the high-tech, performance-oriented solutions that have characterized roadgoing Porsche cars across the manufacturer’s history and to this day. Combining luxury and performance with its celebrated lineup, Porsche enjoys its status as one of the most desirable names in the automotive industry. As such, Porsche’s vehicles feature some of the most premier audio systems on the market, and the brand has announced that it will pioneer even further innovation with the use of gallium nitride. From 2027, Porsche cars equipped with the Burmester High-End Sound system will be the world’s first production-ready in-car audio systems to make use of gallium nitride technology. Used for the semiconductors, gallium nitride boasts greater efficiency and power density than silicon, offering the system greater performance in a smaller and lighter form factor. A high-performance gallium nitride-based chip helps power the car’s 400-watt subwoofer amplifier, and the system was developed in collaboration between Porsche and the University of Stuttgart. A future Porsche, making its debut in 2027, will be the first vehicle to feature the technology in production. About the new technology, Steffen Burosch, responsible for audio systems at Porsche’s Weissach Development Center, says, “A powerful bass foundation is part of the emotive experience our customers expect from a Porsche. The power reserves of our systems enable confident and dynamic sound reproduction, which is perfectly in keeping with the character of our sports cars. Sound in a Porsche is about pure emotion. By using GaN, we can enhance that experience even further.” Porsche has already filed several patent applications for the technology, bringing gallium nitride technology, which has been used since the ‘90s for LEDs and is also used for USB chargers, tablets, and even satellites. Compared to silicon, the advantages of gallium nitride include reduced heat generation, higher switching frequencies, and lower switching losses. With those advantages, the heat sink can be made lighter, and other components can be made smaller, making the amplifier lighter and more compact in its design. Porsche came up with the idea to use gallium nitride for in-car audio in 2023, beginning work to develop the system in 2024.
