McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Created as a spin-off from Luftgekühlt, Air|Water is an ode to Porsche’s long history and the various passionate subcultures of Porsche fans that have come about as a result, especially as the age of the water-cooled Porsche 911 nears 30 years. Returning to southern California in April 2026, the countdown is officially beginning for the fourth edition of Air|Water, as it has gained significant popularity from its previous editions, successful in bringing an accessible, immersive Porsche experience to fans and collectors. Coming to Costa Mesa on Saturday, April 25, 2026, the 2026 Air|Water will take place at the OC Fair and Event Center. Patrick Long, the founder of Air|Water, says “From vintage to modern, racing to street, Air|Water’s vision has always been to have a broad appeal that connects people to the complete story of Porsche. In a similar manner to pushing the automotive engineering envelope we strive to continually deliver more engaging event experiences for our partners, car owners, first timers, and loyal attendees.” Mobil 1 is returning to the festival as a title partner, with its longstanding connection to Porsche Motorsport, and Dunlop will be joining the festival as a partner, as well, with both partners joining the event to celebrate Porsche performance excellence and heritage across the decades of its history. As the name of Air|Water nods to the two distinct eras in Porsche’s history, the poster for this year’s event nods particularly to the transition between the two, highlighting the 993 and 996 generations of the Porsche 911, the end of the first era, and the beginning of the second. <- Gallery -> Parts of the event will feature celebrations of things like the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport by highlighting GT cars, the 90th birthday of Butzi Porsche, the designer of the 911, and the 60th anniversary of the GTP special racing class. Convertible models will also be a highlight of the 2026 Air|Water event, including the Boxster, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary, and the Targa, which is celebrating its 60th. The event will also include a Live Broad Arrow Porsche Auction. Last year’s auction included incredible sales like a 1989 RUF Yellowbird, which sold for $4,650,000, and this year’s auction will have cars crossing the block like the 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup “Diet 7UP VIP” car, and the 1980 Porsche 924 SCCA D-Production, an incredible transaxle pair. More than 50 exhibitors will be present at the Exhibition Hall, and Porsche owners who want to enter their cars in the show are encouraged to submit cars for display soon. Overcrest is also returning with a single-day rally experience, priced at $400, in which a day of driving starts with a group breakfast, after which drivers will take on some of the most scenic roads in Southern California before arriving to Air|Water on Friday evening for a special reception. How A Family Rallied A Porsche 911 Dakar

The Rally dos Sertões is an off-road race in Brazil that was first launched in 1993, and since then, it’s become known as the toughest race in South America. The 33rd edition of the race took place recently, and automotive enthusiasts Fredy and Susele Piotto Vogt competed in the Expedition category of the race. Motorcycles, quads, and special off-roaders take part in the competition, but the Piotto Vogt family chose to drive something unique to the competition: Susele’s Porsche 911 Dakar, the first Porsche to ever take part in the rally. The course led to a river crossing, where many participants paused to cautiously handle the water, but Susele simply forded the river in the 911 Dakar, crossing it with effortless confidence. The race covers over two thousand miles, and the Piotto Vogts have traversed it before in other vehicles, but for the 33rd race, they took it on in the 911 Dakar and an SUV. The Expedition category is not counted in the official classification, so participants can drive parallel to the official race, and the Piotto Vogts chose to drive a route much longer than the official race. In two weeks, the two cars covered an impressive total distance of 4,623 miles. At their home in Campo Largo, Brazil, the couple has a collection not only including the 911 Dakar, but also various classics, dirt bikes, and off-roaders. The couple had a long-time passion for Porsche, but instead of getting a 911 at first, they originally purchased a Cayenne when they found out Susele was pregnant with their son. Over the years, the Piotto Vogts have owned 19 Porsches, including the Cayman, Macan, 911, Panamera, Taycan, and Boxster. Especially with the 911 Dakar they currently own, their sports cars are thoroughly enjoyed and driven daily. Limited to 75 Units: Singer’s New Cabriolet Brings Modern Engineering to the Air Cooled 911

This is the Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet Reimagined by Singer. Unveiled just weeks after the new Singer “Sorcerer,” the first DLS Turbo services commission, this open-roof 964 is alongside other bespoke models within the brand’s wider portfolio. Limited to just 75 examples, every project begins with an owner-supplied Type 964. Singer strips the car to its steel monocoque, evaluates it, and applies composite and steel reinforcements to increase torsional rigidity before fitting lightweight carbon fiber panels inspired by the naturally aspirated widebody Carrera Cabriolet of the 1980s. Development includes durability and validation testing at major proving grounds, with TÜV certification carried out at the Nürburgring. The 4.0-liter flat six, developed with Cosworth, produces 420 horsepower. But crucially, this is the first naturally aspirated engine restored by Singer to incorporate variable valve timing, expanding torque delivery at lower engine speeds while preserving high rpm output. It also marks the first naturally aspirated Singer flat six to combine water-cooled cylinder heads with air-cooled cylinders and an electrically powered fan. It draws directly from engineering lessons in the DLS Turbo program to improve thermal management. A six-speed manual transmission sends power to the rear wheels, and owners may specify a raised gear shifter with exposed linkage and a titanium exhaust system. Singer redesigned the folding roof with a lightweight Z-pattern mechanism that maintains a clean profile whether raised or lowered. Aerodynamic options include a deep front spoiler, rear fender intake ducts for engine cooling, and a choice between a fixed rear wing or a speed-activated unit, as seen above on the Guard’s Red and Specific Blue examples. Auxiliary driving lights that rise from the hood are also available. Four-way electronically adjustable dampers with nose lift, carbon ceramic brakes, 18-inch center lock wheels, Michelin Pilot Sport tires, and five selectable drive modes developed with Bosch complete the chassis package. As with every Singer Vehicle Design restoration, customization defines the final result. Owners will work directly with the California-based company to specify exterior finishes, interior materials, including stitched and burnished leather seams, seat configurations, and exposed mechanical elements. Singer Vehicle Design is known across the automotive industry for transforming one of the most cherished sports car icons: the Porsche 911. Each Singer commission starts life as a 964-generation Porsche 911, and its transformation combines purist driving character, modern luxury and convenience, artisan craftsmanship, bespoke design, and compelling performance. However, a new partnership with Red Bull Advanced Technologies, Red Bull’s high-performance engineering division, seeks to make the open-top variants of Singer commissions even better. Already, Singer’s process of restoring a 964 Porsche 911 Cabriolet or Targa model is painstaking, involving a careful disassembly to the point where the steel monocoque is revealed. It’s at that point where Red Bull Advanced Technologies and Singer are joining forces, with world-class simulation and structural analysis capabilities. Together, Red Bull and Singer used scans and manual measurements to digitally model the 964 chassis, used Finite Element Analysis software to determine the torsional stiffness of different parts of the car both with and without its roof, and used the insight gained from the measurements to create carbon fiber formations to reinforce the hardest working parts and maintain the 964’s original integrity and packaging requirements. <- Gallery -> After a prototype vehicle with the reinforcing structures was built and tested to validate the analysis work, the 13 carbon fiber structures developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies, which are bonded to the chassis during the restoration process, increase the torsional rigidity of the car is increased by an impressive 175 percent, which benefits the handling, braking, and overall driving quality of open-top restorations to closer match the performance of the coupe. For over 20 years, Michael Mauer has been at the helm of Porsche's design. However, the 63-year-old is stepping down to make way for a new Head of Design at the celebrated manufacturer. That is Tobias Sühlmann, a 46-year-old designer who previously served as Chief Design Officer at McLaren since 2023. While Porsche’s legacy will be shaped by Sühlmann’s tenure, Michael Mauer’s impact and influence are lasting on the brand.’ Mauer’s time at Porsche started in 2004, and he was the fourth Head of Design for the brand, succeeding Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, Anatol Lapine, and Harm Lagaay. After studying automotive design at Pforzheim University of Applied Sciences and working for Mercedes-Benz, smart, and Saab, Mauer joined Porsche, and one of the first projects under his leadership was the Panamera. Still an important part of Porsche’s lineup today, the Panamera represented a unique challenge: translating its iconic design principles into a four-door model, going beyond sports cars for the first time since the Cayenne. Mauer was also responsible for the revision of the Cayenne, and then the legendary 918 Spyder hypercar. After that, his work included modernizing 911 and bringing Porsche into the era of electrification. As Sühlmann takes over, Porsche looks forward to a new era of design, informed by his experience not only at McLaren but also at the same university as Mauer and in positions at Volkswagen, Bugatti, Aston Martin, and Bentley. As you made your way along the track to the other side of the beautiful clubhouse designed by Pininfarina, you are greeted by rows of sunbathing convertible Porsches, a display cleverly dubbed “Topless Beach.” At first glance, the show looked like an array of Porsches carefully placed around The Concours Club. It wasn't until I took a closer look that I realized that I was surrounded by some of the rarest and coolest Porsches in existence. GH Vehicles came out swinging and brought multiple Emory Builds, a 959, and a number of Ruf cars from Ruf North America. Prestige Imports contributed a gorgeous Gunther Werks Speedster. But the cars weren’t only for display: we also got to see Porsche in all of its racing glory as old, air-cooled racecars to new Cup cars took hot laps around the track. Porsche has the ability to bring all walks of life together and Flat Six Fest is the perfect salute to one of the automobile community’s most cherished brands. The Concours Club team knocked this event out of the park and left everyone with everlasting memories, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. Porsche Unveils New 'Inspired By Legends' Mural For The Year of the Horse

The coming Lunar New Year marks the Year of the Horse, and in Singapore, one of Asia’s largest cities and luxury destinations, Porsche is bringing a unique celebration of the Lunar New Year to its retail location. Porsche at Jewel is located at the Jewel Changi Airport, a unique and iconic destination located at one of the most important airports in the Asia-Pacific region. A Porsche Experience Center in Singapore is currently under construction, and once it’s finished, Porsche at Jewel will serve as a gateway for visitors who come to Singapore via Changi Airport. For now, though, it’s a unique retail concept in Singapore for the manufacturer, and it’s now housing a special mural called ‘Spirit of Legends’ that celebrates Porsche’s legacy and the Lunar New Year. Completed by artist Priscilla Tey, the artwork not only honors the Year of the Horse, but also nods to the 75th anniversary of Porsche’s participation in Motorsport, which falls on 2026. 75 years ago, Porsche won its first class victory in the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans with a 356 “Super Leicht.” The center of Porsche’s iconic crest features a horse, as well, and that is a tribute to the city of Stuttgart. As such, the mural features horses as its main motif, with the Porsche crest in the background. <- Gallery -> The Porsche 956 is on display at the location, on loan from the Porsche Museum, and it is one of the most impactful icons of Porsche’s 75 years of motorsport history, as it won four consecutive overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 1982 to 1985. Its Nordschleife record also stood undefeated for 35 years. Along with the mural, unique T-shirts, thermal flasks and keychains inspired by the art will be available for sale at Porsche at Jewel. The mural will be on display until 31 March 2026, throughout the festive season, bringing together a unique Lunar New Year celebration and a look back on Porsche’s legendary motorsport legacy.
