McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Porsche Reports 2025 Sales Numbers, North America Remains Top Market

In a year shaped by tariffs, trade uncertainty, tighter supply, and uneven demand, Porsche still delivered 279,449 units globally in 2025, which is down 10 percent from 310,718 units a year earlier. This decline was tied to factors such as supply gaps for key combustion models, softer demand in China, and a deliberate focus on value rather than volume. “After several record years, our deliveries in 2025 were below the previous year’s level. This development is in line with our expectations,” said Matthias Becker, Porsche’s board member for sales and marketing. North America remains the German sportscar maker’s largest market, with 86,229 deliveries, essentially flat year over year. Porsche Cars North America reported retail deliveries of 76,219 vehicles in 2025, narrowly surpassing the prior record set in 2024 and marking the strongest sales year in its history. Certified Pre-Owned volumes also reached a record, rising 11 percent to 48,092 units, reinforcing continued demand across both new and pre-owned cars. “Driven by the loyalty and enthusiasm of our customers for the incredible cars we offer, we have achieved stability and even growth to set a new record in a market that experienced profound change in 2025,” said Timo Resch, president and CEO of PCNA. Meanwhile, Europe, excluding Porsche’s home market, saw deliveries fall 13 percent to 66,340 cars, while Germany declined 16 percent to 29,968 units. In China, deliveries dropped sharply, down 26 percent to 41,938 vehicles, reflecting weaker conditions in the luxury segment and intense competition from domestic players, particularly among electric models. At the model level, the popular mid-size Porsche Macan, now made up of both gas and all-electric variants, led the lineup with 84,328 deliveries , with 27,139 units coming from North America alone. Fully electric versions accounted for 45,367 units, while combustion variants continued to sell in non-EU markets. The Porsche 911 reached a record 51,583 deliveries, underscoring sustained demand for Porsche’s highest-margin sports car, including new T-Hybrid derivatives. As for electrification, globally, 34.4 percent of Porsche deliveries were electrified, with 22.2 percent fully electric and 12.1 percent plug-in hybrids. Over in Europe, electrified models accounted for 57.9 percent of deliveries, with plug-in hybrids dominating Panamera and Cayenne sales. The Porsche Taycan recorded 16,339 deliveries, down 22 percent, as adoption of electromobility slowed. With the all-electric Cayenne joining the lineup alongside the Macan EV, it remains to be seen how this space evolves. Looking ahead to 2026, Becker said Porsche will continue to align production with its “value over volume” strategy while investing across combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains. The Porsche Macan 4S goes sightseeing in Cappadocia. A stunning region of Turkey, Cappadocia is home to captivating rock formations, caves with incredible history, and unique culinary and cultural offerings like iconic hot air balloons and traditional cuisine. Chasing the Spirit of the Carrera GT: Porsche’s Closest '...

The Porsche Carrera GT turned 25 last year, and we saw the biggest gathering of CGTs back in November at Icons of Porsche, just over a month ago. With its evocative-sounding V10 and three-pedal setup, is widely regarded today as the ultimate analog supercar. But why? Because think about it: What other car offers an engine with F1 roots in a mid-engine format, sends power to the rear wheels, and pairs it all with a manual transmission? The successor to the CGT, the 918 Spyder was faster, more advanced, and undeniably brilliant, but crucially, it went down the hybrid and automatic route. That shift made one thing clear: it was the end of the line for Porsche’s most uncompromising analog halo car. As a result, values of low-mileage Carrera GT examples have surged to levels that place them out of reach for most enthusiasts. So it begs the question: which other modern-day Porsche comes closest, if you are looking for that same magical formula that defined the Carrera GT? So the search moves down the range, guided by a few of those aforementioned non-negotiables. Mid-engine, rear-wheel drive, natural aspiration, and a stick. Apply those filters across Porsche’s modern lineup, and you have some pretty limited choices that fit that criterion. Power-to-weight ratio is also a big part of this story. Within the Cayman and Boxster lineage, spanning the 986, 987, and 982 generations, nothing quite matches the Carrera GT’s figure. The CGT produces 605 horsepower and weighs approximately 3,040 pounds, resulting in a specific power output of about 5.1 pounds per horsepower. That is the magic number, and it remains untouched by any mid-engine Porsche that followed. Yes, if you broaden the scope to include 911s, certain GT3 RS models, perhaps come close, but they abandon the mid-engine layout that is central to this discussion. Once that is removed from the equation, the answer becomes obvious. The closest mid-engine Porsche that still respects the underlying philosophy is the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4. Produced between 2019 and 2025 as part of the 982 generation, the GT4 packs a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six that produces 414 horsepower. Early models were offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual, but a 7-speed PDK was subsequently offered with power going exclusively to the rear wheels. Our focus is on the manual here. At approximately 3,200 pounds, its power-to-weight ratio sits around 7.7 pounds per horsepower. On paper, that gap is significant to the CGT. It is also worth noting that the 981 GT4 featured a 3.8-liter engine, and the more potent GT4 RS is PDK-only. Having said that, where the two cars truly align is in engagement. The 982 GT4 isnot a successor to the Carrera GT in performance, and nor does it pretend to be a halo car. But what it offers is philosophical continuity, and its far more compact dimensions make it a properly usable sports car in the real world. Like the CGT, it prioritizes throttle response, revs, balance, and driver commitment over outright speed. The mid-engine layout should deliver the same sense of rotation and precision that defined the Carrera GT, even if the materials and scale are different. Also, sound is another part of the conversation, and it truly matters. Yes, the Cayman GT4 will never sound as otherworldly as the Carrera GT’s high-revving 5.7-liter V10, and it should not be expected to. But that does not mean the 4.0-liter flat-six lacks drama. Far from it, because unlike a 911, where the engine lives behind you, the Cayman’s powerplant sits inside the cabin, just inches from your ears. The result is a raw, mechanical soundtrack that builds with revs and feels intimate, immersive, and deeply connected to the act of driving. Coming to value and attainability, the contrast between these two cars couldn’t be more different. Just 1,270 examples of the Carrera GT were produced globally, and today pricing routinely sits well into the seven-figure range (~$2.0+ million), placing it firmly beyond the reach of anyone who is not a serious collector. It exists now as a reference point rather than a realistic aspiration. By contrast, the 982-generation 718 Cayman GT4, whose production ended in October 2025, was produced in far greater numbers and remains realistically attainable, with original pricing hovering around the low six-figure mark and current market values still within reach for committed enthusiasts today. It is worth noting that you can still get a manual-rear-drive mid-engine Cayman/Boxster in GTS 4.0 guise, but it’s not as track-focused or as powerful as the GT4. In conclusion, while the Cayman GT4 may never carry the mystique or financial gravity of the Carrera GT, that is precisely the point. But if you want the closest attainable expression of that mid-engine, manual, naturally aspirated philosophy today, built to be driven rather than stored in a climate-controlled garage, the 718 Cayman GT4 is likely your closest choice. Porsche Recaps 2025 Reveals, Racing Wins And More

Porsche looks back on an incredible year as 2026 approaches. Porsche is one of the world’s favorite automotive manufacturers, with a lineup full of luxury performance gems, as well as motorsport efforts, a rich history, and a lifestyle empire that have all made the brand a household name over more than 75 years. However, 2025 was an especially transformative year for Porsche, as the brand’s racing teams experienced incredible success, and the road-going lineup from Porsche underwent a transformation to include some of the most innovative cars to wear the iconic crest yet. As 2025 draws to a close, Porsche recapped some of the best highlights from its exciting year. In January, Porsche secured its 20th victory at the legendary Rolex Daytona 24 Hours race, along with revealing the latest generation of the 911 Carrera S. In March, the brand announced updates to its Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system, introducing cutting-edge infotainment technology to models such as the 911, Cayenne, Taycan, and Panamera, featuring Dolby Atmos, Amazon Alexa integration, and an enhanced Porsche Connect package. 1 of 17 - + April marked two significant milestones for Porsche: the 75th anniversary of its manufacturing in Zuffenhausen and the introduction of the limited-production Porsche 911 Spirit 70, a boldly designed and exclusive homage to the distinctive designs of the Porsche 911 in the 1970s and 1980s. June saw the reveal of the road-legal Porsche 963 RSP, a one-off inspired by an iconic Porsche 917 from earlier in Porsche’s racing legacy, as well as an overall second place and class-victory finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In July, the Porsche Cayenne Electric prototype demonstrated its capabilities at Goodwood, and September saw the arrival of a new generation of the Porsche 911 Turbo S, the most powerful production Porsche 911 yet, thanks to the T-Hybrid technology. In October, Porsche revealed the new Macan GTS Electric, and defended all its titles in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In November, the Porsche Cayenne Electric was finally unveiled as the most powerful production Porsche yet, and a new Manthey Performance Kit for the Porsche 911 GT3 further enhanced the track performance of the racing-ready 911. This month, the Porsche 911 GT3 90 F. A. Porsche was created to celebrate the legendary designer’s 90th birthday through an incredible limited-production Sonderwunsch masterpiece. Porsche Unveils New Sonderwunsch Factory Re-Commission "S...

Porsche Sonderwunsch revives the legend of the Carrera GT. After 20 years, the Porsche Carrera GT is still one of the most captivating supercars in Porsche’s storied legacy. With a V10 engine and a manual transmission, it’s one of the most cherished purist-focused performance machines currently on the market, and through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch Manufaktur, customers can have their Porsche Carrera GT examples undergo a “Factory Re-Commission” from Porsche to reimagine their legendary supercars. One of those customers is Victor Gómez from Puerto Rico, whose 20-year-old Carrera GT was not just restored to a new condition, but was also given a unique “Salzburg” livery that echoes another historic Porsche legend: the 1970 Le Mans-winning 917. The interior was also given a bespoke treatment, with upholstery in red Alcantara and accents in matte carbon fiber. The restoration left no stone unturned, with the vehicle being completely disassembled, including its V10 engine being overhauled and carbon fiber parts being recoated. To achieve the Salzburg-inspired livery, the design had to be recreated to complement the Carrera GT’s proportions rather than the 917 race car. The livery is protected with a transparent foil for the owner to drive the supercar on the roads of Puerto Rico, as well. Achieving a dream that is seemingly impossible, Factory Re-Commission allows owners of iconic, historic, and legendary Porsche masterpieces like the Carrera GT supercar to reimagine and restore the supercar to new condition with a configuration that matches their wildest dreams and imagination. The unique “Salzburg” design of this Carrera GT owned by Victor Gómez is an example of that incredible bespoke craftsmanship and design excellence.
