Rivian & Uber Will Deploy Up To 50,000 Autonomous Robotaxis

A $1.25 billion investment is fueling the effort.

Rivian is one of the ambitious manufacturers in the automotive industry that is promising to shape the future of mobility with its creations. Entering the market initially with its rugged, adventure-ready models, Rivian’s own lineup of series production models is expanding with the introduction of the R2, but alongside that, Rivian is also expanding with wider efforts like robotaxis.

The manufacturer has just announced that its partner for robotaxis is rideshare titan Uber, who is investing $1.25 billion in Rivian through 2031, subject to Rivian achieving certain autonomous driving milestones. Uber and its fleet partners are expected to purchase 10,000 robotaxis initially, with the option to purchase up to 40,000 more in 2030. In 2028, the initial commercial deployments of these robotaxis will take place in San Francisco and Miami, with 25 cities planned in 2031.

The fully autonomous fleet will consist of Rivian R2 vehicles, and the announcement of the partnership between Rivian and Uber comes after Rivian announced its third-generation autonomy platform in December 2025. It consists of a multi-modal sensor suite with 11 cameras, 5 radars, and 1 LiDAR. With cutting-edge technology fueling the autonomy of its latest vehicles, Rivian and Uber are coming together with ambitions of shaping the future of mobility across the country with up to 50,000 Rivian R2 robotaxis come the turn of the next decade.
