Rolls-Royce Reflects On Its Goodwood Era Concept Cars

These bold experiments shaped the Rolls-Royce of today. Over 20 years ago, Rolls-Royce opened a new chapter in its rich, century-long history by establishing a new home in the historic location of Goodwood, England, which itself is hallowed in the automotive world. Since then, its lineup has defined automotive ultra-luxury, with incredible design that defines both modern excellence and classic charm, and as Rolls-Royce celebrates its 120th anniversary, the celebrated manufacturer looks back on the past 20 years, and specifically at the experimental concepts that inspired the modern Rolls-Royce vehicles. The use of the “EX” suffix for experimental Rolls-Royce models in began over 105 years ago in 1919, with the 1EX. It also designated the 45EX in 1958. However, the use of the suffix was revived in the Goodwood era of Rolls-Royce in 2004 with the creation of the 100EX. Made just after the start of production for the Phantom that kicked off the Goodwood era, the 100EX featured a V16 engine as a two-door convertible. Yacht-inspired styling set the experimental model apart as a machine made for ultra-luxe driving pleasure, and it eventually became a production model as the Phantom Drophead Coupé in the late 2000s. In 2006, Rolls-Royce unveiled the 101EX, another experimental model that featured a two-door body like the 100EX, except with a fixed roof. That model became the Phantom Coupé, and was succeeded by the Wraith, and now the Spectre, Rolls-Royce’s first all-electric model. The Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupé also served as the basis for the Sweptail, a stunning one-off coachbuilt commission that remains an incredible masterpiece today. The 200EX was revealed in 2009 as an entirely new vision for Rolls-Royce, introducing a more modern, driver-friendly, smaller, and informal model, made for a younger demographic. That model would, of course, be introduced as a production model as well: the Rolls-Royce Ghost. 102EX, revealed in 2011, also known as the Phantom Experimental Electric, was a one-off Phantom that sported an all-electric powertrain, envisioning a future of electric mobility for Rolls-Royce’s ultra-luxury vehicles. The innovations it presented and the data it was able to gather was instrumental in the development of the eventual electric production model from Rolls-Royce: the Spectre. 103EX was unveiled in 2016 as one of the most ambitious and unique experimental vehicles from Rolls-Royce. Its hyper-futuristic design includes a passenger cabin called “The Grand Sanctuary,” with a sofa instead of traditional seats thanks to autonomous driving and a digital assistant within the car called “Eleanor.” Despite its roots in the past and its classic principles for craftsmanship, design, luxury, and opulence, Rolls-Royce boldly aims towards the future within the automotive industry, especially with its rich heritage of experimental “EX” models. Rolls-Royce Unveils New One-Off Phantom Cherry Blossom

Rolls-Royce celebrates an icon of natural beauty in Japan. Japan is a country with rich heritage and traditions, as well as beauty in both modern and ancient forms. However, one of the most prominent symbols of Japan’s natural beauty and tradition for much of its history has been the cherry blossom, and when Sakura flowers begin to bloom, it ushers in a season and the tradition of ‘Hanami,’ the viewing of the cherry blossoms in the spring that is anticipated each year by many. As Sakura season dawns this year, the gorgeous pink flowers are beginning to be seen not only in Japan but in other regions where cherry trees are planted for their temporal beauty around the world, and to celebrate the legendary Sakura and the traditions that surround it, a one-of-one Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended commission has been created by a Japanese client and Rolls-Royce Bespoke with stunning details echoing the natural beauty of Japanese cherry trees. Dubbed the Phantom ‘Cherry Blossom,’ the commission captures the relatively small moment that is the beauty of Hanami in a permanent form, and the work to create the vehicle started three years ago. The centerpiece is a stunning Bespoke Starlight Headliner, which combines the stunning signature lights with a painstakingly-created embroidery comprised of over 250,000 stitches. The embroidery depicts a cherry bough littered with delicate white blossoms. The embroidery continues onto the door panels and Privacy Suite partition, and the sculptural 3D embroidery technique used is a Rolls-Royce first. Continuing the incredible attention to detail in the Phantom Cherry Blossom’s luxury, the umbrellas stored inside the doors feature a similar falling petal motif. In addition, the exterior, whose subtlety elegantly conceals the opulence of the interior, makes small hints to what the car looks like inside with its Crystal and Arctic White color scheme, which is divided by a hand-painted coachline with a delicate and meticulously created cherry blossom motif. With stunning craftsmanship and attention to detail, and beautifully elegant design, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Cherry Blossom commission is a stunning homage to an icon of Japanese springtime and natural beauty. Why It Takes Over 600 Hours To Build A Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce’s ultra-luxury starts from the assembly line. Especially since it established its home in Goodwood, England, over 20 years ago, Rolls-Royce has earned a unique reputation within automotive history for representing the absolute pinnacle of automotive luxury. With opulent details, incredible features, and luxury-focused engineering, Rolls-Royce vehicles have long been a favorite of celebrities and those who want an utterly uncompromised luxury driving experience. However, the painstaking craftsmanship behind Rolls-Royce cars is the foundation for its cherished reputation. It’s at Goodwood where Rolls-Royce’s lineup, consisting of the Phantom, Ghost, Spectre and Cullinan, as well as Rolls-Royce’s multimillion-dollar Caochbuilt masterpieces, are all handmade, with each example reflecting its owner’s personal tastes. With varying degrees of personalization and bespoke craftsmanship, it takes more than 600 hours of work to create any Rolls-Royce vehicle, with more involved commissions taking as much as four years to complete. Seasoned expert craftspeople specialize in each element of Rolls-Royce craftsmanship, working together to create some of the most exquisite pieces of automotive excellence on the market. Over 44,000 exterior colors are available in Rolls-Royce’s palette, and customers can create new colors if they want to match things like flowers, gemstones, or other objects of beauty. Special colors and finishes are also available, with up to 20 layers of lacquer and four hours of hand-polishing to achieve the signature Piano finish. The interiors of Rolls-Royces are finished with stunning leather and fabric, with beautiful techniques like perforation, precise ‘skiving’ for the neatest seams possible, stunning embroidery, and even hand-painted artworks. Features like the Phantom Gallery, Starlight Doors and Headliner, and the copious veneers in Rolls-Royce cars are incredibly laborious to craft, with incredible attention to detail paid to ensure perfection. With steep prices and limited numbers of Rolls-Royce cars on the market, the stunning craftsmanship involved is the reason Rolls-Royces are some of the world’s most desirable cars. The debut fragrance features notes like Amyris, Cedarwood, Rosewood and Iris, creating a scent that echoes the careful elegance that Rolls-Royce cars feature. Rolls-Royce Bespoke Unveils The New Phantom Dragon

Rolls-Royce Bespoke ends the Year of the Dragon with a bang. The Lunar New Year is approaching, heralding the end of the Year of the Dragon in 2024, and the beginning of the Year of the Snake. However, as the Year of the Dragon comes to a close, Rolls-Royce Bepsoke has unveiled a stunning new commission, which celebrates the Year of the Dragon and its incredible influence in Ancient Chinese Culture and throughout East Asia. The stunning project emerged from the new Rolls-Royce Private Office Shanghai, and was commissioned by a client in China as Rolls-Royce’s latest masterpiece: the Phantom Dragon, a one-of-one Phantom Extended Wheelbase whose creation kicks off Rolls-Royce’s celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Phantom nameplate. The commission combines Rolls-Royce’s creative artistry, stunning craftsmanship ability, and ultra-luxurious materials with the dragon's rich history and cultural significance. Specifically, the vehicle depicts the over 3,000-year-old legend of two dragons who shared a divine pearl given to them for protecting the human world. The legend is cherished for its depiction of kindness and generosity. The dragons are a symbol of power and fortune, and the pearl symbolizes purity and perfection. The Gallery features an artwork made of 297 pieces consisting of four different wood species, depicting the swirling dragons guarding the pearl, depicted by the clock in the dashboard. Smoked Eucalyptus, Sycamore, Ash Burr, and Black Bolivar create the scene. Ardent Red and black leather enhance the interior, with other touches including the client’s family name embroidered in Ancient Chinese embroidery and a custom Starlight Headliner consisting of 1,344 lights with 24 “shooting stars.” The elegantly understated exterior, meanwhile, is finished in Iced Diamond Black, with a “shimmering satin” finish, beautifully concealing the opulence inside. As a stunning celebration of Chinese culture and the Year of the Dragon, the new Rolls-Royce Phantom Dragon ends the Year of the Dragon spectacularly, shows off the Private Office Shanghai’s stunning bespoke ability, and kicks off a year of celebration for 100 years of the Rolls-Royce Phantom. Rolls-Royce Celebrates The 100th Anniversary Of The Phantom

Rolls-Royce celebrates a century of flagship excellence. Known for creating some of the world’s most desirable and opulent ultra-luxury vehicles, Rolls-Royce has a long, storied history of creating over-the-top masterpieces with elegant design, painstaking engineering, artisan craftsmanship and fine materials. However, the pinnacle of those aspects has, for 100 years, worn the Phantom nameplate, as 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Phantom legacy, a milestone anniversary for the flagship nameplate of the historic manufacturer. Now in its eighth generation, the Rolls-Royce Phantom has for 100 years represented the pinnacle of Rolls-Royce’s ability to construct the ultimate luxury vehicle, with each generation showing major leaps in technology and features. Today, the Phantom prominently serves as Rolls-Royce’s greatest blank canvas for Bespoke commissions, becoming a vessel for personal expression, artistic excellence, and nods to history. Creations like the one-off Phantom Syntopia, inspired by Iris Van Herpen’s haute couture, the Phantom Extended ‘Year of the Dragon,’ celebrating Chinese culture and the Lunar New Year, and the Phanom Scintilla, inspired by Rolls-Royce’s own Spirit of Ecstasy, show off the immense breadth of Rolls-Royce Bespoke’s potential. In the early 1920’s Henry Royce realized that the Silver Ghost, Rolls-Royce’s ‘best car in the world’ introduced in 1906, had reached its full potential, calling for a replacement. That replacement, introduced in 1925, was the New Phantom, using a name coined by Rolls-Royce’s Commercial Managing Director at the time, Claude Johnson. The first Phantom to feature a V12 engine was the Phantom III, introduced in the early 1930s, after which World War II changed the world surrounding Rolls-Royce, and nearly extinguished the Phantom legacy. However, the Royal Household tasked Rolls-Royce with creating a one-off formal limousine in 1950, and when other heads of state asked the same, the Phantom IV saw 18 examples made. The Phantom V was launched in 1959, and became the Phantom VI, the last body-on-chassis Rolls-Royce model, whose last example was was delivered to the Sultan of Brunei in 1993. The Rolls-Royce Phantom we know today was introduced when Rolls-Royce entered its home in Goodwood over 20 years ago, built entirely in-house by Rolls-Royce and catapulting the historic ultra-luxury manufacturer into the new era the it is known and celebrated for today. The latest generation continues to feature the Phantom’s signature opulence with a V12 engine, a sumptuous, bespoke interior, and artisan craftsmanship. As Rolls-Royce continues into the future, the flagship Phantom legacy will continue to represent Rolls-Royce’s ultra-luxury pinnacle, as it has for an incredible 100 years.
