McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Elferspot Spotlight: Three Porsches That Keep Their Best Details Hidden

Some weeks the three cars line up so neatly you could write the headline before you write the piece. A color story, a Paint to Sample run, a decade. This week refused to cooperate. What came out of the Elferspot listings was a Guards Red air-cooled Turbo, a silver 904 with a competition record most museums would envy, and a black 911 Dakar. On paper, nothing connects them. Spend a few minutes with each one, and the link shows up anyway. Not one of these cars tells you what it is from twenty feet away. The Turbo reads as a nice red 993 until you get into the option codes. The 904 reads as a 904 until you read the entry lists. The Dakar has quietly declined the livery that sells most of them. All three keep the interesting material below the surface, in the paperwork, the build sheet, or the seats, and that is exactly the kind of car worth slowing down for. 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS, Chassis 080 GALLERY-EMBED Chassis 904-080 does not need the usual preamble about why the 904 matters. Gianni Bulgari watched Briggs Cunningham race one at Sebring in early 1964, then bought this car straight from Porsche that spring. Weeks later, he and Maurizio Grana were leading the Targa Florio outright before suspension damage ended the run. Porsche repaired the car at the factory, and in June, Bulgari took it to the old Mugello road circuit and won. There was a win at Vallelunga too, and further podiums, before the car crossed the Atlantic and Sam Posey got hold of it. In February 1966, Posey shared 080 with Jim Haynes and Harry Theodoracopulos for eleventh overall at the Daytona 24 Hours. Racing Sports Cars records period entries at all of it independently, which matters, because history this good is worth checking rather than repeating. The present-day picture is just as interesting. The car has stayed with its current owner since 1988, was inspected by Porsche specialist Jochen Bader in May of this year, and is now European-tax-paid and road registered. It also comes with two engines. A RUF-rebuilt six-cylinder is fitted for use, while the original-style Typ 587/3 four-cam, rebuilt by Dr. Pohl, comes with the car. Be honest about what that means: the four-cam is central to the whole 904 concept, the bonded fiberglass body over a pressed-steel chassis, Porsche's first production car built that way, and the six in the back is a practicality decision rather than a purist one. Some buyers will want it swapped back on day one. Others will drive it exactly as it sits and be glad of it. Porsche records 106 four-cylinder cars, and this is one of the ones with a story attached, so the argument is really about how you plan to use it, not whether it is worth having. View Listing 1995 Porsche 911 Turbo WLS1 GALLERY-EMBED Guards Red on an air-cooled 911 is not news. What sits underneath it here is. This 993 Turbo left the factory in December 1995 with the X50/WLS1 power package, which took the 3.6-liter twin-turbo flat-six to 430 PS through a six-speed manual and all-wheel drive, and Porsche confirms that increase arrived with the 1996 model year. It was then specified further through Porsche Exclusive: XD7 for the front strut brace, XD9 for body-colored wheel centers, X70 for the stainless steel Exclusive door sills, with codes 09971 and 09981 marking the Exclusive build itself. That is a much more deliberate order than a standard Turbo with a power upgrade bolted to it. The seller states 183 factory X50 cars were built. Worth keeping attributed to them rather than treating as a settled production figure. The documentation does real work rather than just filling a folder. The car was collected at the factory in Stuttgart on December 4, 1995, saw early service at Sportwagen-Center Schmidt + Koch in Bremen, and picked up an Approved Used warranty from Porsche Zentrum Hamburg in 1999. Porsche specialists handled it after that; the stamped booklet is still with the car, and a pre-sale service this year included new Michelin Pilot Sports. It shows 108,000 kilometers, has matching numbers, is accident-free, was supplied new in German-market C00 specification, and the seller describes the paint as original. That last point is the one that carries the price, and it is also the one to look at closely in person, because original paint at this mileage is a claim worth verifying with your own eyes. If it holds up, the appeal is straightforward. Factory WLS1, Exclusive specification, matching numbers and original finish rarely turn up in the same car. View Listing 2023 Porsche 911 Dakar GALLERY-EMBED Most Dakars introduce themselves from the far end of the parking lot. This one does not. Finished in plain Black L041 with the Rallye Design graphics left off, it puts the whole job on the raised ride height, the all-terrain tires and the bodywork, and it works. The mechanical package is unchanged: 480 PS from the 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six, eight-speed PDK, all-wheel drive, off-road chassis tuning and Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tires, riding 50 millimeters higher than a Carrera on sports suspension, with another 30 available from the lift system. Production stopped at 2,500. Those numbers are useful here mainly because they explain why a black car with no livery still looks nothing like a regular 992. The restraint stops at the door handle. Inside are carbon full buckets with checked fabric centers, the same material in the door inserts, and sill inscriptions reading "In doubt, never lift" and "Are you sure?". Add the carbon roof, Sport Chrono Plus, PDCC, darkened Matrix LED headlights, heated sports steering wheel, surround-view camera, and roof rack preparation. One owner, German delivery, built in November 2023 as a 2024 model year car, first registered that January, accident-free and matching numbers per the listing, with a fresh service from Porsche Heilbronn in August. The catch, if you want to call it one, is the 11,950 kilometers on the clock, which puts it outside the delivery-mileage bracket collectors tend to chase. I would argue that is the point. This is a Dakar that someone has actually used, kept up to date at Porsche, and specified with a sense of humor rather than a spec sheet aimed at resale. View Listing

1-of-20 Maserati MC20 Icona Listed for Sale on duPont REGISTRY

The blue-and-white finish on this MC20 is part of a Maserati racing lineage that stretches back more than 60 years. This 2025 Maserati MC20 Icona, currently offered by Maserati of Seattle on duPont REGISTRY, is one of just 20 examples produced worldwide, with the dealer identifying this particular car as one of eight in North America. Maserati created the Icona to mark 20 years since the MC12 returned the marque to international competition in 2004 following a 37-year absence. Its Bianco Audace Matte and Blu Stradale gloss finish echoes the blue-and-white color scheme that defined the 2004 MC12 Stradale, translating one of Maserati's most recognizable modern liveries onto the carbon-fiber body of the MC20. When Maserati revealed the Icona and Leggenda in June 2024, it limited each edition to just 20 examples, with the Icona referencing the MC12 Stradale and the Leggenda drawing inspiration from the competition-spec MC12 GT1. The tribute goes back considerably deeper than the MC12 into Maserati's earliest racing history. Maserati traces these colors through the Trofeo Light, which competed at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and further back to the Tipo 61 Birdcage of the early 1960s. Built between 1959 and 1961, the Birdcage earned its nickname from an extraordinary spaceframe chassis constructed from roughly 200 small-diameter tubes arranged into a lightweight lattice around the driver and mechanical components. As a result, the Icona's seemingly simple two-tone finish carries a visual lineage stretching back more than six decades. The same colors later became inseparable from the Maserati MC12, the Ferrari Enzo-derived V12 homologation special of which Maserati built just 50 road cars. The MC12 GT1 became one of the defining GT racers of the mid-2000s, collecting manufacturers', teams', and drivers' championships during a career that returned Maserati to the top level of international sports car racing. The road car now sits at the very top of the Maserati collector market, with a 2005 example selling for $9.46 million at Mecum Indy in May 2026, setting a new public auction high for both the MC12 and Maserati as a marque. Beneath the heritage paintwork sits the MC20's 3.0-liter twin-turbo Nettuno V6, which produces 621 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the carbon-fiber monocoque helps keep dry weight below 3,306 pounds. Nettuno marked Maserati's return to developing its own engines after more than two decades and employs a pre-chamber combustion system derived from Formula 1 technology. There is another reason the Icona example seen here carries real weight in the collector conversation. Maserati has already moved beyond the MC20 name with the MCPura, unveiled at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed. However, the evolution retains the Nettuno V6 and carbon-fiber architecture of the MC20 but introduces revised styling, materials, and personalization under a new name, placing the Icona firmly within the closing phase of the original MC20 story. The aforementioned Nettuno V6 continues to do duty in the MC20, and we had the opportunity to experience it not too long ago in both our 2026 Maserati MC20 Cielo and MCPura Cielo first drive reviews. <- Gallery -> That brings us back to this Icona-liveried car, which is now one of the most meaningful variants from the MC20's relatively brief production run. The window sticker of this particular example reveals how extensively this particular Icona was specified. Carrying nearly $80,000 in factory options, this car includes Bianco Audace matte paint, which on its own was $14,000, lightweight racing seats, 20-inch Trident Wheels Icona, a Premium Sound System, and blue brake calipers. Inside, black Alcantara is paired with Blu Alcantara inserts, grey contrast stitching, and a Blu Trident stitched into the headrests, while Fuoriserie details include the Italian flag badge, Icona-specific trim, and carbon fiber for the instrument cluster cap, paddle shifters, door sills, and engine cover. The livery does more than repaint an MC20 in the colors of the MC12, connecting three distinct eras of the Italian marque's competition history, linking the tubular-frame Birdcage, the V12-powered MC12, and the modern Nettuno-powered supercar, all through one two-tone finish. Rare Low-Mileage Single-Seat BAC Mono Available For Sale on duPont REGISTRY

Where most supercars chase outright numbers, the BAC Mono prioritizes something harder to quantify: the sensation of legally driving a formula-style car on public roads. Limited Spec Automotive is offering this 2023 example on duPont REGISTRY, finished in white with exposed-carbon sections, purple and yellow accents, with just 576 miles on the odometer. British marque Briggs Automotive Company (BAC) places the driver on the centerline in a formula-style seating position. The Mono range has evolved for more than a decade since the original arrived in 2011. This example belongs to the new-generation Mono unveiled at Monterey Car Week, distinguished from earlier cars by its cleaner, less visually complicated shark-nose front end and centrally mounted LED headlights. The single-seat layout allows BAC to package the car’s major hardware close to its longitudinal axis, concentrating mass near the centerline and minimizing frontal area. A compartment beneath the nose even provides enough room for a helmet. Sitting behind the cockpit is a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 311 horsepower, with a six-speed, motorsport-derived sequential manual transmission sending all power to the rear wheels. Now that might not sound like much, but at approximately 1,257 pounds, the Mono delivers an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 546 horsepower per metric ton. That figure outstrips many comparable supercars carrying two or three times its horsepower, because the Mono simply refuses to carry the weight they do. What you end up with is an enthusiast-friendly analog driving experience that is becoming increasingly uncommon in the modern era, and since this is a roadster, it further adds to the drama. <- Gallery -> Carbon-fiber panels, lightweight wheels, AP Racing brakes, Öhlins dampers, and bespoke Pirelli tires make the Mono a genuine featherweight, essentially packing race-bred hardware for the road. The BAC, in fact, sits in the same rarefied category as the Caterham Seven and KTM X-Bow, but its central driving position and exceptional power-to-weight ratio set it apart. The Mono, in fact, even features on our list of cars built around a central driving position. Every Mono is effectively bespoke, hand-built in Liverpool, England, in tiny annual numbers, with total production numbers just over 150 units worldwide since the Mono launched in 2011.
