Mercedes-Benz introduces the first all-electric Popemobile for Pope Francis.
Mercedes-Benz continues its nearly century-long tradition of supplying vehicles to the Vatican with electrifying news, the first-ever all-electric Popemobile. Handcrafted with close attention to detail, the one-of-a-kind build comes based on the new electric G-Class and was personally delivered to Pope Francis at the Vatican. The Popemobile represents Mercedes-Benz’s future-forward approach to sustainable motoring. The custom-built Mercedes-Benz G 580 will debut to the world in time for the 2025 Jubilee, a significant event that will draw millions to the city of Rome.
Designed specifically for the Pope’s needs, the electric Popemobile features a redesigned electric drivetrain to support the low speeds required for his public appearances. Innovative features include a height-adjustable central seat and additional passenger seating for comfort and visibility. Traditional Mercedes-Benz craftsmanship stands out, from the seamless integration of the rear door to the removal of the roof for an open-air experience. Finished in pearl white, the G 580 maintains the iconic styling of past Popemobiles while embracing modern, emissions-free tech.
The delivery event was celebrated by a private audience with Pope Francis, where Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius expressed the honor of contributing to the brand’s historic collaboration. MB team members from Graz, Sindelfingen, and Rome, who spent over a year engineering the bespoke build, were also invited to witness the memorable event. The effort reflects Mercedes-Benz’s sustainable strategy as it moves toward a carbon-neutral future by 2039.
This latest addition to the Popemobile legacy highlights Mercedes-Benz’s long-standing partnership with the Vatican, which first began in 1930 with the Nürburg 460 Pullman. From vintage Landaulets to iconic G-Class models, the evolution of the Popemobile reflects a timeline in automotive design and technology.
