The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is one of the iconic supercars that emerged from a unique collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Celebrating two decades since its debut in 2003, a grand series of events have been organized at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) in Woking, UK, to honor both the car and the people behind its creation. The SLR’s 20th-anniversary celebration brought together four stunning examples of McLaren’s grand tourer, designed and engineered to the pinnacle of supercar standards. On display at the MTC Boulevard were the SLR Stirling Moss, SLR by MSO, SLR HDK, and the SLR 722 GT Prototype, each with its own distinct story and significance. Adding to the festivity was the arrival of the SLR Club, an international group of Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren owners.
The journey of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren began at the 1999 British Grand Prix, with a partnership announcement between McLaren and Mercedes-Benz. Known as ‘Project 7,’ the collaboration sought to bring the Mercedes-Benz SLR Vision concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show that year to the road as a full production car. During the partnership, which lasted from 1995 to 2009, McLaren won four Formula 1 World Championships. The successful combination of McLaren chassis development, carbon fiber technology, and Mercedes engine power culminated in the creation of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, hand-assembled at the then-newly opened MTC.
Even after production finished in December 2009, McLaren’s involvement continued. McLaren Special Operations (MSO) introduced the McLaren Edition SLR, followed by further enhancements and redesign packages. In May 2023, MSO completed the customer handover of the first SLR High Downforce Kit (HDK) conversions, all of which are already sold out.
Reflecting on two decades of this extraordinary super-GT, the celebration at the McLaren Technology Centre is not just about recognizing an iconic car. It’s about celebrating a unique chapter in McLaren’s history, the creativity, innovation, and relentless pursuit of perfection that brought the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren to life. Whether through the aerodynamic mastery of the SLR by MSO or the exclusive 12 SLR HDKs, McLaren’s tribute to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is a celebration of the car that redefined the boundaries of automotive design and performance.
