The world’s most expensive car was sold to support education and a brighter future.
Only 2 examples of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe exist. The model was a prototype from 1955 that exemplified the best in design and beauty that Mercedes-Benz and the entire automotive world had to offer, and it still does exactly that. It’s one of the most legendary and rare cars ever made, and that’s why it sold at an exclusive, invite-only RM Sotheby’s auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum for an incredible and record-breaking €135 million (about $142 million USD), making it the most valuable car in the entire world. Up until May 5 when it was sold, both of the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupes were owned by Mercedes-Benz, but now only one is in possession of the brand, where it will be on display in Mercedes-Benz’s Stuttgart, Germany museum. In addition, the private collector who bought the car has agreed to display it for special occasions.

The money from the sale went towards starting the Mercedes-Benz Fund, a new global scholarship fund that will be aimed at supporting students who will eventually go on to become the driving force behind environmental science and sustainability efforts, and who would otherwise not be able to afford the education they need to pursue their desired career paths. Few moments compare to when a great car and a great cause come together, and it’s hard to do better than the 300 SLR Coupe and Mercedes-Benz Fund.
