Morgan Motor Company is charting a new course towards electrification with the unveiling of its experimental prototype, the XP-1. This developmental sports car marks a significant step in Morgan’s journey to create its first production electric models. Developed by Morgan’s engineering team in Malvern, Worcestershire, XP-1 is based on the Super 3’s aluminium platform and serves as inspiration for electric vehicle (EV) technologies.
Over the past 12 months, the XP-1 has evolved from concept to reality, embodying Morgan’s vision for an electrified future without sacrificing the driving essence it’s renowned for. Though not intended for production, XP-1 is pivotal in advancing driving characterization, powertrain development, EV expertise, and testing new features. The thorough 18-24 month testing program will continuously refine and evolve XP-1, adding cutting-edge technology and innovative features. Representing Morgan’s leap into electric powertrains, XP-1 features a bespoke combination of battery, motor, and inverter. This allows the engineers complete control over throttle calibrations and regeneration levels at different speeds. An in-house developed full vehicle toolchain aids in selecting suitable components, ensuring compatibility and suitability for both XP-1 and future models.
A key focus for Morgan is maintaining the lightweight DNA that has defined the brand for 114 years. The prototype is equipped with fast charging capabilities through the Combined Charging System (CCS) and features bi-directional charging. Additionally, XP-1 introduces new elements like an electronic park brake (EPB) and experiments with aerodynamics, achieving a 33% reduction in drag coefficient. Its bespoke interior display allows for user interface experimentation, providing valuable insights for future sports car designs. As Morgan prepares for its electric era, extensive workforce training and infrastructure adaptation are underway. Embracing EV production techniques and high voltage systems handling is crucial for the brand’s transition. As this prototype evolves, Morgan invites its community to join in this electrifying journey.
