McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. The regulation changes for the 2026 Formula 1 season are already delivering plenty of drama. At the legendary Daikoku parking area, a sacred spot for Japanese Domestic Market enthusiasts, Lewis Hamilton made a surprise appearance. Located at the junction of the Shuto Expressway Bayshore Route (Route B), about 30 minutes out of Tokyo, if you’re even remotely into JDM cars, you know the significance of this place. Gordon Ramsay Spotted Driving His New $1 Million Aston Martin Valhalla in Central London

Traffic in Central London rarely stops for anything, yet earlier this weekend, heads turned when celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay was seen in his new Aston Martin Valhalla, a $1 million hybrid mid-engine supercar limited to just 999 units worldwide. First showcased as a concept in 2019 as the AM-RB 003 concept, the production variant was revealed in 2021, with final testing wrapping up in March last year. deliveries only began recently. Diving into the Valhalla configurator, Ramsay’s example appears to be a beautifully specified Midnight Blue example, with a 2x2 Twill satin carbon fiber package, an Elwood blue central stripe that runs the length of the car over the roof scoop, the top-mounted twin-exhaust all the way onto the fixed rear wing, along with blue accents (Theme 2). It sits over Forged Magnesium satin-black multi-spoke wheels and black brake callipers. A right-hand drive car, the blue/satin carbon theme continues on the inside with twill carbon finish accents on the dash, steering, seats, and carbon fiber seats contrasting against what appears to be a pale blue leather interior with blue stitching. Underneath the sculpted carbonfiber bodywork sits a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-plane crank Mercedes-AMG-derived V8 paired with hybrid assistance, which puts out a combined 1,064 horsepower and 812 pound-feet of torque. An F1-derived hybrid system features two electric motors on the front axle, with a third in the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission providing additional torque to the rear wheels, resulting in an all-wheel drive setup. The hybrid setup offers about nine miles of all-electric range. The aero package was designed by the great Adrian Newey, one of the greatest minds in Formula 1 and Aston Martin F1’s team principal, and is capable of 1,322 pounds of downforce at 150 mph. The Valhalla can hit 62 mph in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 217 mph, figures that place it firmly in contemporary supercar territory, positioned below the more extreme V-12-powered Valkyrie. Ramsay’s garage already includes several limited-production Ferraris alongside Aston Martin models such as the DBS 770 Ultimate, DBR22, Valour, and the Valiant. Ferrari is one of the most cherished household names in the automotive industry, and as an aspirational symbol of excellent design, high performance, and exclusive luxury, other household names in the world of pop culture and music have been closely associated with Ferrari throughout its history. Many of the world’s most famous musicians are custodians to incredible collections of luxury and exotic cars, and Ferrari is no exception. With a new exhibition at Museo Enzo Ferrari in Modena titled The Greatest Hits - Music Legends and their Ferraris, Ferrari is showcasing a curation of musician-owned cars, which opened on February 18. Artists in the exhibition didn’t just own Ferrari cars, they also saw them as an inspiration and as an integral part of their journeys in their careers or personal lives, and Ferrari’s announcement about the new exhibition says that the cars on display are a reflection of that deep connection. Along with the new exhibition, a collection of video and audio content has been created, including a series of podcasts produced by Chora Media with journalist Federico Buffa participating. With an impressive racing resume that includes a 19-season career in the NTT IndyCar Series, a 2011 win at the 24 Hours of Daytona, and a five-time winner in Champ Car Atlantic, you have to wonder what scratches the automotive itch for a driver of that caliber. This just so happens to be the magic question for Graham Rahal, a man who already surrounds himself with ultra-exclusive supercars and collector cars on a daily basis through his operations at Graham Rahal Performance in Zionsville, Indiana. And while the massive dealership is filled with an extensive inventory that features everything from 1-of-1 collector Porsches to ultra-exclusive Ferraris, something has to be extremely special to earn its spot inside Graham’s personal collection. The Maserati MC12 shapes itself as one of the most influential and unlikely supercars of the 21st century, born from Maserati’s return to international GT racing and built to homologate a dominant race program. Sharing its Ferrari-derived 6.0L naturally aspirated V12 with the Enzo, another fan favorite of Rahal’s, the MC12 delivers around 630 horsepower and a truly raw driving experience. Limited to just 50 road cars, the MC12 quietly rose from an overlooked outlier to a blue-chip collector icon, now recognized as a pinnacle Maserati and one of the most significant homologation supercars ever built. DJ Khaled: This Rolls-Royce Phantom is probably my third or fourth Phantom. It’s iconic and classic, and you can never go wrong with it, no matter what year it is. This one only has a few thousand miles on it, but it reminds me of the beginning. I remember when they told me I could never have a Phantom. They said that all the time. So I made sure I got the extended version, not the regular Phantom. The long wheelbase, the one you order. They said I couldn’t get certain interiors, so I asked for red guts. I’ve always been a fan of luxury cars since I was a kid. One of my first dream cars was a BMW M3. I had the original one, then the E46. Even when I didn’t have money, I always made sure I got a nice car, even if I missed the car notes and they came to pick it up. It wasn’t about showing off, it was about expressing success. When I finally got the Phantom, it felt like I pulled off the impossible, and that inspired me to go even bigger. duPont REGISTRY: Can you show us the interior and what makes this a long wheelbase? DJ Khaled: This is the long wheelbase. Look at the seat, I can put my whole feet up. I don’t drive this car, I get driven in it. It’s my office. If it’s an hour drive, it feels like 20 minutes. Back here I’m doing emails, calls, ideas, music, sneakers, merch, movie scripts, and planning the next play. It keeps me inspired, and I’m grateful for that. We do shoots like this to show people they can have this too, if they want it. This car is timeless and a classic. That’s how you start collecting cars. You get one, and before you know it, you have four. duPont REGISTRY: Tell us about this one, the Maybach 62S Landaulet. DJ Khaled: This Maybach Landaulet is serious. There are only a few of these in the U.S. It’s not a regular Maybach. I wish they would go back to this shape. The back seat is one of my favorites. This one has no roof. They told me I could never get a Maybach, so I got a Maybach with no roof. People have offered me millions for it, but I won’t sell it. I made the record ‘Top Off My Maybach’ with JAY-Z, Future, and Beyoncé. While we were working on it, I said I couldn’t make a record like that without living it, so I ordered the Landaulet. This one is special, timeless, and completely factory. I didn’t want to change anything. duPont REGISTRY: And the Virgil Maybach, what does this car mean to you? DJ Khaled: This is one of my favorite cars, and it’s one of my everyday cars. First, it’s from the great Virgil Abloh. Not many people get to collaborate with Maybach and create something of their own. The colorway is incredible. Nobody would have thought to do this. Virgil either took a chance or hit a home run, and he hit a home run. I’ve known Virgil since the early Kanye days, and his vision was unbelievable. He was creating sneakers, clothes, and Maybachs, even things we didn’t know he was working on. This was the hardest car for me to get. I contacted the CEO of Maybach and stayed persistent. Eventually, one became available. When it showed up on the trailer, it was a blessing. duPont REGISTRY: And this one, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan? DJ Khaled: This is my everyday car. If I’m not in my truck, I’m in this. I pull up to golf in it. It has Tiffany seats, which I special ordered. Shoutout to Jen at Rolls-Royce for helping me design it to match my golf bag. Rolls-Royces drive with so much power. I love them. This is the car I use for school drop-offs, pick-ups, and errands. duPont REGISTRY: Let’s talk about the jet. DJ Khaled: Every time I walk into the We The Best air hangar, I remind myself that I worked hard for this. I needed it because the business kept growing. I was traveling from city to city and sometimes three states in a single day. The Global 6500 feels like my living room in the sky. We made the carpet, the seats, and the pillows feel like home. I want peace and comfort when I fly. A jet is like time travel. It saves time and gives you freedom. If it’s raining, we wait. If there’s turbulence, we go around it. And yes, you can fly from Miami to Tokyo nonstop. My favorite memories are with my family. Watching my kids enjoy the life I worked for is priceless. The jet was a dream that became a goal, and then I achieved it. Now I’m thinking about the next jet. duPont REGISTRY: Your work ethic is nonstop. What drives you? DJ Khaled: No one is going to work harder than me. That’s a fact. Teamwork makes the dream work, but I have to get it done. I want to inspire entrepreneurs. There are no shortcuts. Praise God, work hard, go hard, and stay grateful. Everything I do is for my kids and my family. I want them to have seven jets one day, but I want them to know the steps to get there. Kevin Hart Channels Bad Boys With A Porsche 964 Turbo

Celebrities have always had a strong influence on the automotive world, and fans love peeking into the garages of the rich and famous to see what kind of cars they choose to drive. For some, it's all about having the latest and greatest with all the options, but for others, like American comedian and actor Kevin Hart, their passion for all things automotive runs deep and is evident in an extensive collection that defines diversity at its best. And it's not something kept behind closed doors for privacy. We’ve all been witnesses to Kevin having a casual conversation in traffic with a celebrity tour bus behind the wheel of a Ferrari 812 Competizione, while on the other end of the spectrum, he’ll be on scene at auction events, taking home pristine classic Chevrolet Corvettes and Buick Grand Nationals. Kevin Hart just recently entered a whole new realm of cool after posting photos of himself beside a gorgeous Porsche 964 Turbo that almost resembles the exact spec from the 1995 film Bad Boys starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. I say "almost" because the 964 Turbo featured in the movie came optioned with black calipers, whereas the one in Kevin’s Instagram post shows bright red calipers. The actual movie car, once owned and sold by Director Michael Bay for $60,000, sold at Mecum Auction Kissimmee in January 2022 for a jaw-dropping $1.43 million. And while we cannot definitively say that this is Kevin Hart’s car, we know that he enjoyed some time inside the car, captioning the post with “Vintage Cruises on a Sunday…. #LilSwag” The Porsche 911 Turbo (964) marked an important evolution of the Turbo lineage when it debuted in the early 1990s, bringing together the best classic air-cooled character with serious performance upgrades. Initially launched in 1990 with a 3.3L turbocharged flat-six producing around 320 horsepower, it sat at the top of the 964 series, portrayed by its wide body, iconic rear wing, and purposeful stance. In 1993, Porsche introduced the more powerful 3.6L version, increasing power to 360 horsepower. Both versions kept the raw, rear-wheel-drive nature that defined earlier Turbos, delivering a demanding but rewarding driving experience. Today, the 964 Turbo is widely regarded as a pivotal air-cooled 911, bridging old-school Turbo intensity with a more modern sense of class and collectibility. Porsche has built plenty of special 911s over the decades, but few modern examples carry the same weight as the 911 S/T. Created to mark 60 years of 911, the S/T is all about going back to the basics, mechanical feel, and simplicity. This particular 2024 Porsche 911 S/T comes with just 253 miles on the odometer and was previously owned by the lead man of Maroon 5, who is a well-known Porsche enthusiast with a reputation for carefully curated, driver-focused cars. Adding celebrity provenance further elevates its appeal, and that association alone gives this S/T a narrative that goes beyond production numbers and option codes. Finished in Shore Blue Metallic and specified with the Heritage Design Package, this particular example leans heavily into its commemorative role. Gold badging, Exclusive Design taillights, PDLS+ LED matrix headlights, and Heritage details throughout set it apart visually. Inside, Black and Classic Cognac leather, Sport Seats Plus, the Chrono Package, Bose surround sound, and an individually numbered limited-edition plaque complete the cabin. What truly defines the S/T, however, is weight reduction. Carbon fiber body panels, magnesium center lock wheels, lightweight glass, and a pared-back interior make it the lightest 992-based 911 ever produced, tipping the scales at just over 3,000 pounds. Unlike the GT3 RS, the S/T does away with the fixed wings, active aero, and rear wheel steering, resulting in a cleaner silhouette and a more traditional road-focused character. Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes come standard. Limited to just 1,963 units worldwide and offered only with a manual gearbox, the 911 S/T is already viewed as an end-of-era Porsche GT car.
