McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. 1,250HP Corvette ZR1X Announced as Pace Car for the Indy 500

For more than 70 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has stood as a true piece of Americana, an enduring symbol of both automotive heritage and the American dream for generations of enthusiasts. Across eight generations, it has evolved from a post-war roadster into a modern mid-engine sports car, consistently pushing its performance into new realms. A twin-turbocharged 5.5L V8 sends 1,064 horsepower to the rear wheels, while a 186-horsepower electric motor drives the front axle, offering all-wheel drive grip and a sub-2-second sprint to 60 mph. For its pace car duties, this ZR1X is optioned with the Carbon Aero package, delivering much-needed downforce through dive planes, underbody strakes, and a rear wing that generates over 1,200 pounds at speed. It’s the type of track-level engineering you need when casually leading the pack at 130mph around the 2.5-mile oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.This year’s Indy 500 Corvette features a patriotic livery through the Stars and Steel Collection design. One side of the car is Arctic White, while the other is Admiral Blue, tied together by American flag-inspired details and exposed carbon fiber. Inside, Santorini Blue seats are paired with red contrast stitching and seat belts, giving the cabin a patriotic, performance-focused look even if the car is technically pacing rather than racing. From Bowling Green to Le Mans: Corvette’s Biggest GT Push Yet

For more than 103 years, 24 Hours of Le Mans has stood as the ultimate proving ground in motorsport, drawing manufacturers and race teams to France to see what their cars, and their drivers, are really made of. It’s 24 hours of relentless, unforgiving racing, where durability matters as much as outright speed, and simply making it to the finish is an achievement before anyone even thinks about crossing the line first. With the official entry list now confirmed by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest, General Motors is showing up in full force. Four Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.Rs will line up in the LMGT3 class, while Cadillac Racing will compete with three factory Cadillac V-Series.R race cars. Seven cars on the grid might sound like a lot, but at Le Mans, presence matters almost as much as pace. Seeing four Corvettes on the Le Mans grid at once is monumental, even by Corvette Racing standards. The program brings together a mix of factory-backed and privateer teams, with TF Sport returning as the team’s FIA World Endurance Champions, and additional entries earned the old-fashioned way through results. Le Mans has always rewarded teams that earn their place, not just buy it. It’s also not the first time Corvette has rolled deep into France. The brand debuted here in 1960 with four cars, including a GT class win, and repeated the feat in 2016. What makes the Corvette Z06 GT3.R especially exciting is how closely it stays tied to the road car. Two groundbreaking Corvette concept cars – the Corvette CX and the CX.R Vision Gran Turismo – have made their debut at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, offering a glimpse into the future of America’s most celebrated performance brand. While neither is intended for production, both are set to inspire Corvette design language for years to come, blending more than 70 years of heritage with bold, forward-thinking innovation. The Corvette CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo mark the final chapter in a series of design studies from Chevrolet this year, the result of a global GM design initiative. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X: How 1,250-HP ’Vette Blurs Line B...

Chevrolet’s Corvette is an icon because it represents the quintessential American sports car – it’s an accessible, aspirational, and multi-generational car that’s no stranger to pushing boundaries. With its 1,064 horsepower ZR1, the most powerful production Corvette C8 on sale today, it’s a full-throttle statement that American supercar performance is evolving with ferocity. But it’s just been trumped by the 1,250 hp, all-wheel-drive ZR1X, which isn’t just a new chapter in Corvette's storied history, it’s a bold statement that elevates it to the rarified atmosphere of world’s most elite performance machines. During Chevy’s presentation of the ZR1X, the word “hypercar” was mentioned on multiple occasions, and it’s in the headline of its press release. Surely, that’s a term reserved for the realm of Bugatti, Ferrari, Koenigsegg, McLaren, Pagani, or Rimac? And when we’re talking American hypercars, we must mention Hennessey’s amazing Venom F5, the 3D-printed Czinger 21C and the wild SSC Tuatara. But what truly defines a hypercar? Let’s ponder the following… Extreme performance: that box is ticked here with a 233-mph top speed, a claimed 0-60 time of 1.9s, and a power output substantially north of 1,000 horses. Advanced technology: a front-axle electric motor turns the ZR1X into a four-wheel drive machine, the 5.5-liter V8 engine that motives the rear axle is boosted by two massive turbochargers, and it sports a carbon fiber roof and advanced stability controls. It has also increased usable battery energy from the E-Ray model by about 26%, and this elevated range of energy is what delivers more power to the front-drive unit and achieves additional torque from the front axle. What it won’t boast – although we don’t know for sure yet! – is a seven-figure price tag, like every other hypercar out there today. Or how rare it will be, given that it’s a mass production manufacturer that’s fond of satisfying demand rather than creating it by strangling supply. Chevrolet has sold 160,000 of the mid-engined eighth-gen Corvettes, and is on track to sell more C8s by the end of this calendar year than C7’s full generation. It’s reported that only 300-500 ZR1s will be made in 2025, but that’s likely to be a moving target as it moves into the 2026 model year. Perhaps that’s the strongest indication why Chevrolet continues to roll out more Corvette models; people clearly like it, therefore produce more of them. Incidentally, Corvette’s Marketing Manager Megan Dally reports that C8 customers are younger, more affluent and more diverse than previously – which is always a welcome direction of travel for any OEM. “America's true hypercar has arrived,” she declared. “It's the true hypercar level, where we're blending in that LT7 engine with the electric all-wheel-drive technology to truly see what's capable up at the top end… We're putting the world on notice with this car, showing what Corvette and America’s true supercar is capable of.” Josh Holder, Corvette’s Chief Engineer, stated that the ZR1X was always planned to “be the bookend” to its eighth-generation offerings. “The team worked very hard to get as most performance as possible,” he said. “It brings learnings from the ZR1 and the E-Ray and combines them to create an unbelievable driving experience. The ZR1X brought an opportunity to develop performance in Corvette like we’ve never done.” He added: “From the 1,064 horsepower, twin turbo LT7, we increased the usable battery energy in the ZR1X to achieve even more power from the front drive motor, 125 ft pounds of torque went to 145 ft pounds of torque, and another 26 horsepower for 186 horsepower on the front axle.” That all combines to give 1250 horsepower, putting it just 8 hp away from the $2 million McLaren W1! Cody Bulkley, Chassis Controls Engineer, explained: “With a big horsepower number of 1250, it nets massive performance. You’re talking 1.3 Gs of longitudinal acceleration, throwing your whole body into the seat, and with this beautiful electrified all-wheel drive system, you can manage Gs of lateral and longitudinal acceleration at the same time. This is performance like none other, and it is so sustainable, so easy to drive.” The ZR1X offers a brand-new drive mode called ‘Qualifying,’ which strategically deploys the energy in the best way possible to get single lap racetrack pace, and a performance traction management mode called ‘Pro’ for maximum traction. It also boasts a push-to-pass button that deploys all 1250 horsepower on demand. Bulkley added: “We started with the blank whiteboard and went over everything we could to get the ultimate pace out of the car. Now, for the ultimate mic drop: 0 to 60 in under two seconds and a quarter mile under nine seconds.” But power is nothing without control. He added that the new J59 carbon ceramic brake system is “incredible” and sports Alcon calipers, featuring 10-piston fronts and six-piston rears, with 420-millimeter rotors, and claimed the system provided over 1.9 Gs of deceleration at the Nürburgring Nordschliefe’s daunting Tiergarten section. The car also offers a higher-downforce ‘Carbon Aero’ offering as part of its ZTK Performance Package, that clips its top speed back to a mere 225 mph. Externally, the difference between the ZR1 and the ZR1X isn’t drastic, because it’s underneath the car where significantly altered strakes have shifted its balance slightly forward to take advantage of the all-wheel drive. It also weighs “180-ish more pounds” than a ZR1. “The unique design features on the exterior aren't there to just create the look,” explained Vlad Kapitonov, its Advanced Design Manager. “They're there to really contribute to the hypercar performance. No detail is frivolous.” This car stays true to Chevy’s aim that the Corvette should be aspirational, while being accessible, and always pushing boundaries. All hypercars are supercars, but not all supercars are hypercars… However, the new Corvette ZR1X somehow blurs the dividing line, in a similar vein to Ferrari’s SF90 Stradale. Perhaps it’s best to say that this is hypercar-level performance for a supercar price; or that these cars are ‘hypercar adjacent’. Chevrolet has unveiled its most audacious high-performance car ever: the 2026 Corvette ZR1X. Packing a staggering 1,250 horsepower and advanced electrified all-wheel drive, the ZR1X not only redefines what a Corvette can be – it makes a compelling case as the first production hypercar from a mass-market American automaker. And with it, Chevrolet now claims the most powerful duo of American performance cars ever built, thanks to the arrival of both the ZR1 and the even more radical ZR1X. A Hypercar-Level Powertrain At the heart of the ZR1X is the new LT7 twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8, a flat-plane crank masterpiece that generates 1,064 horsepower and 828 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheels. Paired with an electric front axle motor contributing an additional 186 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque, the ZR1X reaches a GM-estimated total output of 1,250 horsepower – making it the most powerful car Chevrolet has ever produced. “From day one, we designed the mid-engine Corvette architecture with ZR1X in mind,” said General Motors senior vice president Ken Morris. “This is the most revolutionary platform in Corvette history, supporting the widest range of American sports cars and delivering world-class performance at every level.” With the combined power of gas and electrons, the ZR1X rockets from 0 to 60 mph in under two seconds and clears the quarter-mile in under nine seconds at more than 150 mph. The ZR1X takes the electrified layout pioneered by the 2024 Corvette E-Ray and turns up the voltage – literally. While the LT7 powers the rear wheels, the front axle features a compact electric motor. The system is not plug-in; instead, the 1.9-kWh battery recharges through regenerative braking, optimized to handle high-performance driving conditions. ZR1X’s front motor can deliver maximum torque up to 160 mph before disconnecting, enhancing traction on launch and stability at speed. With upgraded internals over the E-Ray, the ZR1X’s front motor makes 26 more horsepower and 20 more lb-ft of torque. Next-Level Engineering and Drive Modes The car’s performance software suite – heavily updated from E-Ray – integrates multiple drive modes designed for specific track scenarios: Endurance Mode: Optimizes battery usage for consistent lap times over a full fuel tank. Qualifying Mode: Maximizes output for single-lap performance. Push-to-Pass: Delivers peak output instantly when the driver demands it. New for 2026, PTM Pro provides advanced control even in “everything off” scenarios. It includes regenerative brake torque vectoring and intelligent front-axle braking for enhanced agility. Launch control also gets an upgrade, with customizable settings for different surface conditions or personal preference. Race-Bred Braking and Chassis Options Stopping all that speed is the new J59 carbon-ceramic braking package, featuring Alcon 10-piston front and 6-piston rear calipers clamping on 16.5-inch rotors – the largest ever fitted to a Corvette. The system is engineered for extreme heat resistance and consistent feel, achieving up to 1.9G of deceleration from 180 to 120 mph in GM testing. Buyers can choose between two chassis configurations, both featuring Magnetic Ride Control: ‘Standard Setup’ is fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, perfect for grand touring and spirited driving, while the ZTK Performance Package comes with Cup 2R tires, stiffer springs, and the Carbon Aero option – adding underbody strakes, dive planes, and a massive rear wing capable of producing 1,200 lbs of downforce. The model will be offered in coupe and hardtop convertible body styles. FHP is making highways safer with its newest police cruiser. It's an idea first adopted by the Italian State Police Force in 2004 when Automobili Lamborghini donated one of its newest supercars to its dedicated police fleet. Not necessarily brought on to only catch superspeeders on the highway, the purpose-built Lamborghini police cars have evolved into versatile service vehicles for emergencies like organ deliveries. Today, the Florida Highway Patrol is embracing the same forward-thinking as it proudly debuts a C8 Chevrolet Corvette as part of its ever-growing fleet of police cars. @florida_highway_patrol Instagram FHP took to its Instagram page this week to reveal its newest cruiser, a 2023 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray that was seized in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force and not purchased with state funds. The Corvette sports the same stealthy two-tone State Trooper livery and hidden emergency lights as all FHP vehicles, making highway speeders think twice when seeing a black C8 Stingray on the road. GM Reveals A Futuristic Corvette Concept From Its New UK ...

The future is bright for the Corvette. General Motors just opened the doors to a brand-new advanced design studio in Royal Leamington Spa, about 20 miles from Birmingham, and they’re already making waves with a wild new Chevrolet Corvette concept. Developed by the UK-based design team, the futuristic EV concept reimagines what a Corvette could look like with zero restrictions, blending clean, muscular shapes with design characteristics inspired by aviation. The reveal kicks off a global design project that’ll include even more Corvette concepts through 2025, each designed by different GM studios worldwide. With the UK studio now up and running, GM is putting more focus on the European market as it ramps up Cadillac’s EV presence with plans to launch Corvette sales in the region. The Royal Leamington Spa location is led by Julian Thomson and staffed by more than 30 designers. The space is equipped to support both digital design and physical clay model work, and it’s already showing results with the debut of this concept. While there are no plans to put this version of the Corvette into production, the idea was to stretch creative boundaries and explore new possibilities for EVs. The concept features an additive-manufactured body for reduced mass and greater efficiency, powered wing doors, a dual-aero system with fan-assisted airflow, and a racecar-inspired pushrod suspension setup. The entire car is low, wide, and aggressive, sitting just 40.66 inches tall and riding on staggered 22 and 23-inch wheels.
