McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Two friends living their best lives! Some friendships are built on shared jokes or late-night talks, but for a few, the bond is forged in horsepower and high revs. For Curt Garner and Yahn Bernier, their connection has always revolved around a love for all things automotive, and more specifically, factory Ferrari race cars and ultra-exclusive production models. Their passion for speed and Italian craftsmanship recently caught the attention of Ferrari’s Tailor Made program, turning that dream into a shared reality of owning bespoke Daytona SP3 specs. The Last Naturally Aspirated Mid-Engine V8 Ferrari Ever B...

Within Ferrari’s mid-engined V8 lineage, nothing captures the peak of the naturally aspirated era more perfectly than the 458 Speciale. It represents the final evolution of Maranello’s high-revving V8 formula before the shift to the turbo/hybrid generation began. Looking back, Ferrari’s mid-engine V8 bloodline began with the 308 GTB in 1975 and progressed through significant milestones like the 348, the F355, the 360 Modena, and the F430, eventually arriving at the 458 Italia that hit the scene back in 2009. The 458 introduced a modern dual-clutch transmission (DCT), delivering rapid, seamless shifts with real usability at low speeds. It packs a naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 with 562 horsepower, sophisticated aero that generated functional downforce without a fixed rear wing, and a chassis that elevated steering response to new levels. We can’t talk Italian and not talk about its timeless form. Designed by Ferrari’s in-house styling center in collaboration with Pininfarina, Jeremy Clarkson once described the 458 Italia as “the prettiest car Ferrari has made in years,” and time has proven him correct as the shape has aged well. The 458 Speciale that broke cover in 2013 refined that standard platform into something sharper. Its 4.5-liter V8 makes 605 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, 398 pound-feet of torque, and a visceral soundtrack to go with it. The standard 458 weighs 3,042 pounds dry, whereas the 458 Special tips the scales at 2,846 pounds, improving the power-to-weight ratio to about 4.7 pounds per horsepower. At speed, active aerodynamic elements integrated into the bodywork deliver 529 pounds of downforce at 124 mph. That improvement was a direct result of new front winglets, revised bumper and Kamm tail diffuser designs, vented body panels, and an updated rear deck shape. Hardware upgrades also included lighter engine internals, a carbon fiber underbody, carbon ceramic brakes, forged wheels, recalibrated suspension, and new tire specifications matched to the chassis. The Speciale also introduced Side Slip Angle Control, an integrated handling system that communicates between the electronic differential, traction control, and stability management to allow controlled slip without sacrificing precision. All this directly translated into faster circuit performance, and the Speciale recorded a 1 minute 23.5 second lap time at Fiorano, more than a second quicker than the standard 458 Italia (1:25) and the Enzo (1:24.9). Zero to 60 mph is done away with in 3.0 seconds, and top speed is 202 mph. While the 458 Speciale really excelled on the race track, it's truly meant for the street, and despite having a driver-focused cockpit, creature comforts like a suspension lift system and NAV were available. The mannetino helped you to further improve usability by switching the dial over from 'Race' to 'Sport'. In 2014, Ferrari introduced the 458 Speciale A, where the A stands for ‘Aperta’. It retained all mechanical and aerodynamic characteristics of the coupe while adding the open-top drama of a convertible, and the weight penalty is just 110 pounds. Period rivals to the 458 Speciale include the McLaren 650S, the Lamborghini Huracán LP610 4, and the Porsche 911 GT3 RS 991. In terms of production numbers, between 2013 and 2015, Ferrari built 1,309 units of the Speciale coupe and 458 units of the Speciale Aperta globally. A one-off 458 Speciale MM also exists. Factory 458 Speciale colors commonly included Rosso Corsa, Giallo Modena, and Nero Daytona. However, paint-to-sample orders in shades like Grigio Silverstone, Bianco Avus, and Blu Tour de France with contrasting stripes are increasingly sought after. Options such as carbon fiber wheels, extensive carbon fiber interior trim, and exposed engine bay configurations are highly valued. Standard 458 Italias sit near $230,000 depending on condition, while Speciales consistently land in the $550,000 to $600,000 range with tailor-made configurations and low-mileage cars commanding even higher figures. In terms of one-offs, you have the As modern supercars continue to integrate hybrid systems and turbos, the market appears to be placing a premium on pure combustion models. Mid-engine production Hybrid Ferraris like the 296 GTB (819 hp), SF90 (986 hp), and the recently introduced 849 Testarossa (1,036 hp) may be faster, but collectors understand that sound, response, and mechanical purity are not replaceable. Models like the 458 Speciale, the F12tdf, and the 812 Competizione have become increasingly desirable among non-hybrid Ferraris for this very reason. Ferrari Reports Profit Increase In Q3 2025

Ferrari continues to increase its revenue and operating profit. One of the biggest brands in the world, Ferrari is not only a manufacturer of some of the most desirable performance cars in the world, but one of the most historic racing titans in motorsport, with a fashion house and various other business ventures making it one of the most storied household names in existence. In a time that for other automotive manufacturers, and especially those making luxury and performance cars like Ferrari, has proved challenging, Ferrari has continued to excel, with the results for the third quarter of 2025 showing increases in many important metrics. During the quarter and during the first nine months of the year, shipments increased by one percent, compared to 2024’s third-quarter numbers, and revenues increased by seven percent in the quarter and eight percent in the first nine months. Meanwhile, operating profit increased by eight percent in the quarter, with an impressive twelve percent increase in the first nine months of the year. Sponsorships, commercial, and brand revenues saw the most dramatic increases during the period, while cars and parts remained the largest contributors to Ferrari’s revenue. Shipments of those cars took place for the most part in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region, while the Americas trailed behind. In addition, the largest increase in deliveries during the first nine months took place in the EMEA region. Ferrari Classiche Partners with FIVA to Honor Authenticity

At the AutoMoto d’Epoca show in Bologna, Ferrari Classiche announced a partnership that reinforces its mission to preserve the brand’s heritage with the same precision that built it. The agreement with the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA) means that Ferraris awarded the official Certificate of Authenticity will now automatically qualify for a FIVA Identity Card, a key credential required for participation in many prestigious historic car events around the world. For collectors, the connection between Maranello and FIVA bridges Ferrari’s certification process and the global standards for automotive authenticity. Ferrari Classiche, founded in 2006, is headquartered within the marque’s Maranello factory, a fitting home for the department that guards the soul of Ferrari’s past. Every vehicle that passes through its doors is treated as a living piece of history, meticulously examined for originality in everything from engine components to bodywork. The Certificate of Authenticity is a stamp of approval and a statement that the car is as Enzo intended. Over the years, legends such as the 250 GTO, F40 LM, 288 GTO, and Daytona Competizione have undergone the extensive process, emerging with renewed provenance and a direct line to the Prancing Horse’s storied history. Complete with custom wheels, a custom exhaust, and revised visuals and aerodynamics, NOVITEC’s take on the Ferrari 12Cilindri is a beautiful refinement of an already incredible performance machine. Carbon fiber aerodynamic components throughout not only optimize the aerodynamic efficiency of the Ferrari 12Cilindri, but they also give the car a unique look with NOVITEC’s signature edge. Meanwhile, custom staggered 21 and 22-inch wheels further enhance the looks of the grand tourer. Ferrari F76: The Prancing Horse’s First-Ever Virtual Hype...

Ferrari has just done something no one expected. After dominating Le Mans for a third straight year with the 499P, Maranello has unveiled the F76, its first-ever car created entirely for the digital world. You can’t drive it, touch it, or even see it in a showroom. Instead, it exists purely as a collectible NFT ( non-fungible token), a digital asset reserved for members of Ferrari’s exclusive Hyperclub,limited to just 100 clients, representing Ferrari’s most elite circle. This marks a clear strategy shift, targeting younger, tech-savvy entrepreneurs who view blockchain assets as a new form of collectible ownership. At first glance, the name might sound like another internal code. But F76 pays tribute to a milestone that defined Ferrari’s racing legacy, the brand’s first Le Mans win in 1949 with Luigi Chinetti and Lord Selsdon in the 166 MM barchetta, chassis number 0008M. This car also won the Mille Miglia that same year. Now, 76 years later, Ferrari is using that same competitive spirit to bridge racing heritage with digital innovation. A digital design study led by Flavio Manzoni and the Ferrari Styling Center, the F76 explores how generative algorithms and biomimetic design can reshape performance aerodynamics. Every surface, curve, and vent was calculated through a parametric design process that treats the car like a living, breathing structure. The bodywork uses topology optimization to direct airflow, cooling, and downforce exactly where needed. The most striking feature is the dual-fuselage layout, which splits the driver and passenger cells housed under their own individual glass canopies, creating a central aerodynamic channel that doubles as an active wing. If you follow classic cars, this was also something that we saw on the wild 1967 OSI Silver fox prototype. Airflow divides at the nose, travels across sculpted surfaces, and merges at the rear beneath a floating wing suspended between twin vertical fins. Every line is shaped by physics, not aesthetics alone. Elements from past projects, like the Ferrari F80, reappear here: vertical side cuts, floating front splitters, and sculpted body volumes. Even the retractable headlights nod to the 1970s and 1980s Ferraris with pop-up lights, bridging heritage and experimentation. Inside, dual cockpits sync through drive-by-wire tech, allowing both occupants to feel the same inputs in real time. It’s a fresh take on shared driving, something no physical Ferrari has attempted before. Hyperclub members could customize their F76 NFTs across multiple drops, each representing a unique, one-off digital Ferrari tied to the brand’s endurance racing program. NFTs are beginning to reshape the automotive space. They offer manufacturers like Ferrari a way to extend design experimentation without the cost or regulation limits of production. Alfa Romeo and Lamborghini have dabbled in digital collectibles, but Ferrari’s F76 marks the first time an automaker has created a fully realized concept as a functional NFT ecosystem. The move also builds on Ferrari’s decision to begin accepting Bitcoin, Ethereum, and USDC for car purchases in the United States in 2023, later expanding the service to Europe. Owning the F76 NFT connects you directly to Ferrari’s racing program and its design studio, a level of engagement previously impossible. Maranello isn’t replacing mechanical cars with pixels, far from it. But the F76 does showcase how design, ownership, and emotion will evolve in the digital age. Ferrari Brings 40 Cars To Mugello For The 20th Anniversar...

Ferrari brings fanfare to the 20th anniversary of its XX program. The Ferrari XX program began with the FXX, the Enzo-based track-only supercar that was made specifically for some of Ferrari’s most exclusive clients to race on tracks across the globe. Along with Ferrari’s F1 Clienti, and part of Ferrari’s Corse Clienti circle, the XX program has since blossomed to include the 599 XX, a race car with a front-mounted V12, the LaFerrari-based FXX K and FXX-K Evo, and the SF90 XX, which is the first XX-branded car to be street legal. This year, the Ferrari XX program is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and to mark that incredible milestone, over 40 Ferraris are gathering at the legendary Mugello race track amidst Ferrari’s Finali Mondiali, and over 40 cars in the XX program and their client drivers will be on the circuit. The presence on the track consists of examples of the 599 XX and the 599 XX Evo, as well as the FXX K and FXX-K Evo. The gathering at Mugello, taking place from October 21 to October 26, will be especially emotional because it not only celebrates the 20th anniversary of Ferrari’s incredible XX program, but it will also close an intense season of racing for Ferrari’s Corse Clienti. Races took place in Jeddah, Monza, Le Castellet, Miami, Fuji, Barcelona, and Spa. Meanwhile, preparations are already underway for the 2026 season, which will start in Qatar before heading to Le Castellet, Mugello, then to COTA, Road Atlanta, Portimão, and Budapest, before the Finali Mondiali, where the venue is yet to be announced.
