McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. Maserati MCPURA Cielo Tributo 1926: Modena Mille Miglia Reveal

Over 100 years ago, on April 25th, 1926, Alfieri Maserati sparked automotive history at the Targa Florio, taking to the grid with the very first car to ever carry the iconic Trident on its hood, the Tipo 26. A century later, those pivotal moments continue to inspire and influence the future of Maserati and its supercars, further connecting its motorsport heritage while paying homage to the cars that paved the way. Maserati recently delivered a one-off MCPURA Cielo Tributo 1926 during the 2026 Mille Miglia, with a tribute livery inspired by Alfieri’s Tipo 26. Created by Maserati through its Fuoriserie customization program, the one-off open-top MCPURA was delivered at the Maserati showroom in Modena right as the Mille Miglia rolled through town. So instead of a quiet handover, it became part of something much more significant. It’s a nod to where everything began. Back in the early days, Alfieri Maserati was laying the foundation for what would become one of Italy’s most recognizable brands by putting Maserati on the racing map.The exterior is where the history lesson comes into play. The MCPURA Cielo Tributo 1926 comes finished in Grigio Lamiera Matte, a raw, industrial-looking gray that looks like it belongs in an old racing paddock. Over top of that sits a layered racing livery of Rosso Capannelle, Blu Infinito, and Bianco Pastello, complete with Alfieri’s original “5” racing number. The hood features a recreated Tipo 26 badge, tying it directly back to Maserati’s early racing identity. The Trident appears in Bianco Pastello on the body and B-pillar, while the 20-inch Cyclonic wheels with red pin stripping add a touch of modern performance that balances the heritage vibe. Inside, everything shifts from historic storytelling to a modern luxury GT look and feel. The cabin follows Fuoriserie specs, clean, tailored, and very intentional. The interior is layered in rich white leather with Maserati’s Trident stitched into the headrests in a contrasting shade of blue. Technology is where it snaps back into the present day. A 695-watt, 12-speaker Sonus faber system handles audio, while heated seats, driver assistance features, and a front axle lift make it far more usable than its looks might suggest. It’s basically a collector-level design piece that you can still drive daily without treating it like a museum piece. Under the hood, the MCPURA Cielo Tributo 1926 is powered by Maserati’s twin-turbo Nettuno V6. It’s a compact 3.0L engine built around performance borrowed from Formula 1. Output sits in supercar territory at roughly 620 horsepower, which is more than enough to push the lightweight open-top chassis from 0 to 60 mph in the low-3-second range and a top speed past 200 mph. Maserati Returns to the 1000 Miglia With a 1953 A6 GCS/53 and a Tribute to the First Woman in Formula 1

The 1000 Miglia has never been a simple car show on wheels, and Maserati's 2026 entry makes that point with considerable force. Running from June 9 to 13 along the classic Brescia-Rome-Brescia route, the 44th edition of the famous regularity race brings together more than 400 historic automobiles from 29 countries across approximately 1,180 miles of Italian roads. Maserati arrives with one of the most significant entries in the field: a 1953 A6 GCS/53, chassis 2043, the car that competed across five consecutive editions of the original speed race from 1953 to 1957, including the final one, making it likely the Maserati with the most appearances in the competition's history. Behind the wheel will be owner Igor Zanisi and his daughter Lara, whose participation carries historical weight. The pairing honors Maria Teresa de Filippis on the centenary of her birth. De Filippis, a close friend of Zanisi and a defining figure in Maserati's history, became the first woman to qualify for and compete in a Formula 1 Grand Prix when she lined up for the 1958 Belgian Grand Prix at the wheel of a Maserati 250F. The A6 GCS/53 is currently undergoing Certification of Authenticity through Maserati Classiche, the official program dedicated to the Italian marque’s historic heritage. The A6 GCS/53, also known as the Sport 2000, was driven during its racing career by Luigi Musso, among others, and represents one of the longest active racing histories of any car from its era. Four current Maserati models, GranTurismo, GranTurismo Trofeo, GranCabrio, and GranCabrio Trofeo, will accompany the race car along the route as support vehicles. As seen last year, each will feature exclusive liveries inspired by historic Maserati models, including the Tipo 26, A6 1500, 250F, and 3500 GT. The 2026 entry falls within 100 Years of the Trident, marking a century since Alfieri Maserati won his class at the original race in 1926. That the brand returns to the same roads a hundred years later with one of its most historically documented race cars, driven by a crew paying tribute to one of motorsport's most significant but under-celebrated figures, gives this entry a weight that few others in the 2026 field can match. The 2026 GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli opens this weekend (May 30-31) at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, a.k.a. ‘The Temple of Speed,’ and the timing could not be more deliberate. Just days after Maserati marked a significant presence at the annual Motor Valley Fest in Modena, where the brand unveiled the MCPURA in a striking Ai Aqua Rainbow Fuoriserie finish and hosted senior executives and historians for its "Trident Talks" series, the focus shifts to the track for the season opener. 1-of-30 Maserati 200S Receives Factory Classiche Certification

Maserati is once again placing renewed focus on one of the most important parts of the collector car world: provenance. This week, the Modena-based marque confirmed that a 1957 Maserati 200S, chassis 2406, is the latest to officially receive its Maserati Classiche Certificate of Authenticity. Maserati says its Classiche program has now surpassed more than 100 certified vehicles since launching in 2021. The 100th vehicle to do so was a 3500 GT Vignale Convertible prototype, which we touched on last month. Another Classiche-certified 3500 GT with a Touring Superleggera body was presented at Retromobile, Paris, earlier this year. Launched in Modena in 2021, Maserati Classiche was created to preserve, restore, and authenticate historic cars with the Trident badge. The certification process itself is extensive. Maserati’s specialists examine original chassis specifications, historical documentation, ownership records, racing history, and factory archive material before issuing approval. The program covers vehicles more than 20 years old, alongside limited-production models and historically important specials. <- Gallery -> This latest addition carries serious historical significance as it is one of only 30 examples of the aluminum-bodied 200S that were built between 1955 and 1957, making the open-top race car one of the rarest competition Maseratis ever produced. But what makes this specific 200S especially significant is the story behind it. Maserati confirmed the car was rediscovered and restored during the 1980s by Ermanno Cozza, widely regarded as the company’s “Maserati Historical Memory.” Born in 1933, Cozza joined Officine Alfieri Maserati in 1951 and later helped establish the Maserati Historical Archive. More than 75 years later, he reportedly assisted during the certification process for chassis 2406. The 200S itself represented a critical turning point for Maserati during the 1950s. Developed as a response to Ferrari’s lightweight sports racers, the car employed a 2.0-liter alloy engine with twin overhead camshafts, dual ignition, Weber carburetors, and either a four or five-speed transmission. Drivers, including Jean Behra later helped establish the model’s reputation in international competition. Maserati’s growing focus on heritage certification mirrors a broader shift across the collector car market. Programs like Ferrari Classiche and Lamborghini Polo Storico have already demonstrated how factory-backed authentication can directly influence market confidence and long-term valuations. Throughout the year thus far, Maserati has noted in various announcements that 2026 marks one of the most special years for the brand yet, as it marks a century since Maserati debuted its iconic Trident emblem, as well as a century since its debut in the world of motorsport. The two happened at the same time, as Alfieri Maserati brought the Maserati Tipo 26 to the Targa Florio race, marking Maserati’s first appearance at a race, and the first appearance of a Maserati bearing the Trident. That happened on April 25, 1926, which means the official anniversary of the event came this past weekend. Now that the date has taken place, Maserati is building even more excitement than before about the centenary, with a new communication program set to trace the past 100 years of Maserati history by highlighting the most iconic cars that came about throughout that time. Alongside that, Maserati’s events throughout the year will highlight the milestone, and a new Italian postage stamp has been created to mark the centenary. The process of creating the logo began in 1925, when the family’s artist, Mario Maserati, created the first drawing of the Trident. Bologna’s Fountain of Neptune served as its inspiration, and the emblem ended up on the Tipo 26 that was entered in the Targa Florio’s 1500cc class and won the class in 1926. That moment began an incredible legacy, which continued with success at the 1939 and 1940 Indianapolis 500 races, Targa Florio wins from 1937 through 1940, Formula 1 wins and a Formula 1 championship victory in 1957, FIA GT championship wins with the MC12 in the 2000s, and the current legacy of the Maserati GT2. Along with Maserati’s presence in motorsport, the Trident itself evolved throughout the years, taking on several different designs, with the latest redesign taking place in 2020 with the introduction of a new Maserati lineup led by the MC20 supercar. A new video has been created chronicling much of that history, showcasing legends like the Tipo 26, the Ghibli, the MC12, and today’s GranTurismo Trofeo, Grecale Trofeo, and MCXtrema. Created with 3D animation and artificial intelligence, the video is enhanced with an AI recreation of Maria Teresa de Filippis’ voice. With over a century of history and legacy, creating some of the most iconic, desirable, and beautiful Italian luxury cars that combine opulence with driving pleasure, Maserati has become a household name in the Italian automotive industry. At this year’s Salone del Mobile.Milano, Maserati is lending its heritage and legacy to the furniture and design-focused event as an official sponsor and a mobility partner. Taking place from April 21 to 26 at Fiera Milano Rho in Milan, the event will see Maserati bring together the worlds of furniture, design, and cars with its presence. The Maserati Lounge at the event will serve as a welcoming space for guests, with Giorgetti furniture, including pieces from the Giorgetti Maserati Edition collection. Sonus faber will also be present in the space with its Amati Folgore speakers, which are a result of a collaboration between Sonus faber and Maserati, as well. The one-off Maserati Grecale Giorgetti will be at the event, created as a bespoke vehicle through Maserati Fuoriserie and previously showcased during 2025’s Milan Design Week with accessories dedicated to outdoor living and travel. Maserati’s GranTurismo Meccanica Lirica will also be at the event, which is a bespoke ode to Maserati’s home city of Modena, Italy, drawing connections between the automotive world and music as a nod to Modena’s iconic opera house. Beyond Rho Fiera, Maserati will also take center stage during the public program at the Design Kiosk surrounding the Salone, showcasing the relationship between design, culture, and innovation, with the automotive industry and Maserati’s brand as context. Maserati Delivers MCXtrema Supercar In Tampa, FL

Natural light flooded the showroom of the Maserati Tampa dealership during golden hour this past Saturday, and the room was filled with excited VIP guests who all gathered to celebrate the delivery of one of Maserati’s most exclusive creations yet: the MCXtrema. duPont REGISTRY had the privilege of attending the exclusive private event. A track-only masterpiece, the MCXtrema features the most extreme performance that Maserati’s Nettuno twin-turbo V6 engine offers, with 730 horsepower, along with extreme aerodynamics and a lightweight design purely dedicated to performance excellence. Matching the combined number of track-only and road-legal Maserati MC12 examples made, the production run of the MCXtrema consists of just 62 examples, which made the Tampa delivery event a particularly memorable one. The owner is Michael Moss, a racing enthusiast and a collector whose other vehicles include motorsport classics and various automotive masterpieces. About the MCXtrema, he said, “This car represents everything I love about performance and engineering. From the moment I began working with Maserati on this car, I wanted to create something truly personal and as focused as possible for the track. Being part of the journey, from visiting Modena and attending the GT2 European Series to experiencing the car on track with Andrea Bertolini at Monza, made this delivery incredibly meaningful. I can’t wait to push it to its limits in GT competition.” <- Gallery -> Created as a bespoke commission with the very best the MCXperience program has to offer, Moss’s MCXtrema features a unique Italian flag livery and is designated as the final VIN in the 62-car production run. Moss worked closely with Maserati’s team, as well as its Corse motorsport division. The configuration included multiple visits to Modena and Turin, Italy, and close collaboration with Klaus Busse, Maserati’s Head of Design. Busse’s signature is on the transmission cooling air scoop, and a hand-drawn sketch also commemorates the relationship. The configuration also includes the lack of a passenger seat and the inclusion of telemetry options, a quick refueling kit, an advanced tire pressure monitoring system, and more. That’s because, rather than spending its life in a garage or only coming out for occasional track days, Michael Moss’s new Maserati MCXtrema is destined for competitive racing, specifically in the International GT Series, which is coming to Lime Rock this May.
