Data-Driven insight: What Makes the Ferrari 328 GTS a Good Investment?

by Charles Bradley
December 9, 2024
in Buying Guides, Ferrari News
A Ferrari 328 GTS roars in the studio, its sleek red curves accentuated by colorful graph lines and circles, offering a visual symphony of data-driven insights.

The Ferrari 328 GTS is an eye-catching car that promises much for a buyer on many levels – and its stock is on the rise as its 40th anniversary approaches in 2025.

How many Ferrari 328 GTS cars were built?

Launched in 1985, a four-year run produced 6,068 cars, built after the 308 line. With its larger engine (hence the ‘2’ in the model number), the 328 GTS boasts elegant Pininfarina styling with a Targa roof that looks great, whether on or off. The hardtop version, the 328 GTB, might have a stiffer chassis but lacks the extra headroom afforded by the GTS – and the sheer driving pleasure with the top down.

What are the main selling points of the Ferrari 328 GTS?

The Ferrari 328 GTS’s mid-engine 3.2-liter V8 produces 270 horsepower – good for a top speed of over 160mph. And who doesn’t like pop-up headlights and five-spoke Speedline wheels? One major selling point is its ‘analogue’ nature, and it packs a reputation as one of Ferrari’s most durable and easy-to-maintain models.

Without a reliance on complex electronics – it has Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection and a stout five-speed manual gearbox – it’s shown strong value retention, with prices on the rise for well-maintained examples, and they have fairly rocketed recently for low mileage cars.

What do you need to know before you buy a Ferrari 328 GTS?

As with all makes and models, you must focus on the condition, mileage, specification and options, and service history of the car. The condition of its interior is a major selling point of the Ferrari 328 GTS – given that it’s a Targa-top car, it’s very important to check there’s no water damage.

Another aspect to check for is the car’s paint code readings; if it has been repainted incorrectly, this will ruin its appeal to the Ferrari community. This is just as important as having a ‘clean’ title with a spotless Carfax history.

The scatter plot illustrates the average price trajectory from September 2023 to July 2024, offering a data-driven insight into investment trends. Prices span from 60K to over 200K, with February 2024 marking the lowest point near 100K.

What are the known issues with the Ferrari 328 GTS?

Front wheel bearings are the most-reported issues with the Ferrari 328 GTS, but this can be aided by regular greasing. As with many classic cars, starting motor issues have arisen, and it’s a good idea to ensure that the car’s engine is warmed-up before any strenuous driving activity.

Exhaust manifolds also require regular inspection, as they have been known to crack. The electronic heater and ventilation controls can also be problematic.

How many Ferrari 328 GTS cars have sold this year?

Per online sales auction data from The Daily Vroom, 17 Ferrari 328 GTS cars were sold in 2024, while six failed to sell. Most of the inventory (72%) was from model years 1985 and ’86, but the later-year examples appear more desirable and sell for a higher price – perhaps as ABS was introduced in mid-1988.

What is the average price of Ferrari 328 GTS sales?

This year’s online sales auction total for the 328 GTS is $1.8 million to date, with an average price per sale of $90k. The best online sale price was $138,000, for a 22,000-mile 1989 car. Judging by the comments on this example, this particular car’s value is expected to head north in years to come.

What is the record price for a Ferrari 328 GTS?

The record price paid for a 328 GTS was set in 2024 at $335,000 for a truly ‘time capsule’ example with only 244 miles on the clock, which was sold at Broad Arrow’s Monterey Jet Center auction. It was built in March 1989, is Ferrari Classiche-certified and awarded ‘first in class’ at the 2020 Cavallino Classic – a true pinnacle example of this car.

An original-owner 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS, with 27,000 miles on the clock, sold on September 23, 2024, for $121,000 on Bring a Trailer.

What price range does the Ferrari 328 GTS sell for at auction?

Per Hammer Price data, another 13 Ferrari 328 GTS cars were sold at auction in 2024, for a total of $1.7 million, with a further four failing to reach their reserve.

Besides the $335k outlier, another standout low-milage 328 GTS (with 647 miles on the clock) sold for $239,250 at Mecum’s Indianapolis auction in May. At the opposite end of the scale, a 1988 model with 55,000 miles on the clock sold for $68,392 at Saint-Tropez in June.

Conclusion

Although it’s perhaps underrated in Ferrari’s glittering product range, when it comes to the size of the bang for your buck, the 328 GTS is both a driveable classic car and a solid investment.
