Today, hybrid luxury performance cars are becoming increasingly common as manufacturers use the technology to up the ante of performance and increase efficiency at the same time. Cars like the Mercedes-AMG E 53, the BMW M5, and the latest Audi RS 5 are all available with powerful hybrid powertrains, and they are also available as station wagons, a criminally underrated silhouette that, thanks to an enthusiast cult following, is beginning to get its day in the sun.
However, before all of those cars, a hybrid performance wagon came along that used a similar formula to the one we see today, except in a form that was much more dramatic at the time compared to its peers. That was the second-generation Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid Sport Turismo, and in its Turbo S form, it was the most powerful Porsche Panamera sold at the time. A 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 550 horsepower was paired with a 136-horsepower electric motor, giving the system a total system output of 680 horsepower.
Monstrously powerful thanks to its hybrid powertrain, the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo also shared a platform with the Bentley Flying Spur, with a similarly large footprint. Its size and wagon body style made it completely unique among other luxury performance wagons, and it was also the most powerful stock wagon in its time.
