How long has the Porsche 911 been around?
The Porsche 911 was first introduced in 1963, which means that 2023 marks its 60th anniversary. For six decades, it’s reigned as one of the world’s favorite performance cars, and as 2023 is also Porsche’s 75th anniversary year as a brand, the celebration of the 911 and its rich legacy is incredibly special.
What is the difference between the 911 trims?
The Porsche 911 Carrera is the entry-level version of the Porsche 911. However, don’t let that designation fool you into thinking the Carrera is anything but excellent. It features a powerful engine, driver-focused features, plenty of luxury, and iconic style.
The Porsche 911 Carrera S adds performance and extra features to the mix, slotting it above the Carrera, while the Porsche 911 Carrera T, which stands for “touring,” offers weight-saving features for a more visceral driver’s car experience. Just below the Turbo models is the GTS, which offers increased performance and excellent sports car characteristics.
The Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S offer the most powerful engines in the 911 lineup, as well as the most features and exclusivity outside of the GT versions. Speaking of those, the Porsche 911 GT3 is currently the most race-focused 911 available, as well as its even more potent counterpart, the GT3 RS. In the past, GT2 versions offered even more power, but the current 992 generation isn’t offered with a GT2 as of yet.
The Carrera, S, and GTS are all standard with rear-wheel drive but available with all-wheel drive, which is indicated by a “4,” as in “Carrera 4S.” The Porsche 911 is also available in three body styles: as a coupe, or with an open top, either as a soft-top cabriolet, or with as the historically inspired Targa. The Targa is available for the Carrera 4, Carrera 4S, and Carrera 4 GTS, and the original Porsche 911 Targa from decades ago, named after the historic Targa Florio race, is what the “targa top” is named after.
