McLaren W1 First Drive: Ferocious Hypercar Transcends the Track

You know things are getting serious when McLaren rolls-out the ‘1’ suffix. The origin story is, of course, the very first road car McLaren ever built, the F1. Designed by visionary Formula 1 aerodynamicist and engineer Gordon Murray, it arrived in 1992 and rendered all other supercars obsolete. The tiny, lightweight F1 embraced carbon-fibre material technology, adopted a radical centre seat driving position with two passengers set back and either side and was powered by a 6.1-litre V12 engine from BMW that might as well have been passed down directly from the Gods. Game-changer? That doesn’t even come close to describing its impact, even if at the time sales didn’t come easy… The P1 was very different. Rather than a unique side project from the Formula 1 team, it was instead a statement piece for McLaren Automotive, a new road car division still in its infancy. It arrived in 2013 and was a wild-eyed showstopper. It traded the long-legged gait and supple suspension of the F1 for a weaponized hybrid system capable of delivering 903bhp and huge blue flames from its drainpipe exhaust. In Race mode, it lowered by 2-inches and its massive concave rear wing extended into the sky. The P1 was all about aerodynamic downforce, crazed acceleration and a snorting, angry soundtrack that mixed venomous twin-turbocharged V8 with the manic whirr of electric motors. Not so much a car as a force of nature. And now there’s this: The W1. It’s a true successor to the P1 with a similar brief and, on the face of it, it evolves rather than radically reinvents McLaren’s vision for the ultimate hypercar. This is not a criticism. How could it be when the result is this dramatic and has such staggering, other-worldly potential? The W1 has 1258bhp delivered to the rear wheels. It’s capable of 0-124 mph in 5.8-seconds, the quarter mile in 9.6-seconds at 167 mph and produces 2205lbs of downforce at 174 mph. The active aerodynamics – particularly a rear wing that extends way out beyond the rear of the car – are pure performance art and deliver massive aerodynamic efficiency. The result, aside from looking extremely cool, is that the W1 is McLaren’s fastest road car around a racetrack. Ever. Their benchmark circuit is the breath-taking Handling Track at the Nardo proving ground in southern Italy, where the W1 beats their previous benchmark, the flyweight McLaren Senna, by three seconds per lap. Or “a lifetime” as they call it in racing. Maybe two lifetimes! Core to the W1’s performance is the new ‘Aerocell’ carbon fibre tub. With integrated seats and a raised footwell to allow for inboard pushrod-operated front suspension – which in turn gives air a clean path to the huge underbody diffuser – it’s light, stiff, space efficient and has been instrumental in McLaren realising a full ground-effect concept. Just like last year’s F1 cars, which were the fastest ever made. There is also an active front wing and the aforementioned complex rear wing dubbed ‘Active Long Tail’. All of which is very admirable. But the ‘anhedral’ or gullwing doors and the fantastically shirnked-wrapped feel to the minimalist, highly-focussed interior are a pretty good side effect. The W1 feels special. Those fixed seats are perhaps a shade more upright than expected, and the driving position is less obviously racecar than, for example, the Aston Martin Valhalla or Ferrari F80. However, once you’ve adjusted the pedals (they move on a slider) and the delicate, slim-rimmed and alcantara-trimmed steering wheel, there’s an overwhelming sense of purpose. The cabin is so tightly tailored and imparts a sense of lightness and agility before you so much as start the all-new 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which makes 916bhp all on its own and revs to 9200rpm. Reach up to a roof-mounted control panel to find the starter button. Maybe this fighter plane trope is a little corny, but somehow you feel thrilled rather than manipulated. The W1 has a sense of humour as well as all that motorsport-derived sophistication. There’s a short delay, but when the engine does fire it’s instant – as the high-powered hybrid system negates the need for an old-school starter motor. A sharp flare of revs tells you that this engine is hyper-responsive and angry. On some deep level your brain and body have been sent all the signals required to prepare for something new and intense. Ahead of us, an empty Mugello racetrack, so press and hold the blue button next to the red starter to select Race mode. The centre display graphic shows the W1’s transformation in real time as it lowers by 37mm at the front and 17mm at the rear whilst simultaneously undocking all that active aero goodness. Race mode is not road legal and is geo-locked. You can show your friends and neighbours the aero dance, but it won’t allow you to select a gear to actually drive unless you’re at a circuit. Incidentally, the rocker switches either side of the display binnacle allow further options now: Toggle up the Handling control on the left for Race+ (for F1-spec super smooth tracks) or stick to Race for gnarlier ones. On the right toggle select ‘GP’ for sustained performance over a stint or ‘Sprint’ to unleash all 1258bhp for a time attack. There’s also a DRS and Boost function on the steering wheel. But I guarantee you won’t have the mental capacity to use them… Exit the pitlane, pin the throttle and W1 takes maybe a millisecond or two to gather its might (the gearing stretches to around 60mph in first, nearly 100mph in second, primarily to aid traction), but then lunges at the first turn with incredible ferocity. It instantly feels light, almost like inertia is no longer a thing. McLaren really does prize lightweight engineering, and at 3084lbs (dry) the W1 has a 278lbs advantage over the Ferrari F80. Plus, Ferrari uses figures for cars fitted with every single carbon fibre option. In reality, the gap is probably wider still. The impression of agility and stunning control continues as the track is unravelled at startling pace. The electric motor mounted to the side of the new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is good for 342bhp and 324lb ft and it boosts any low rev lethargy the new flat-plane crank V8 might have (spoiler alert: It doesn’t appear to have any), so the W1 just feels massively, almost impossibly powerful at any revs. Even so, there’s real reward for wringing it out to 9200rpm and the power curve feels superheated but organic, too. In Race mode the steering – still hydraulically powered – has less assistance and it is noticeably heavier than other McLarens. However, that resistance is welcome as it gives you something to push against and imparts so much information about the front grip level. New Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres with a bigger front footprint than P1 or Senna really help. The front-end feels incredibly secure and the rear-axle follows with perfectly-aligned precision. The whole car feels super-stiff, completely locked into the surface and inspires confidence, but there’s an inherent agility and adjustability that means you’re quickly confident to push at its limits and really impose yourself on the chassis. It’s such a complex car but the driving experience is intuitive, and the driver feels a key contributor rather than just amazed (or terrified) observer, holding on for dear life. Every dynamic ingredient really is shockingly effective and yet has a subtlety and lightness of touch. From that delicious steering to the incredible brakes, the W1 just feels so mission-focussed, so hooked-up. Only the new 8-speed gearbox is a slightly disappointment. It’s fast and punchy, but after the scintillating energy of the Ferrari F80 ’box it feels competent rather than inspired. Other quibbles – it’s okay to quibble when the starting price is $2.1-million before tax and destination charge. Well, that new twin-turbocharged V8 sounds tightly wound and aggressive but if you have a P1 tucked in the garage you’ll miss the snorting, Darth Vader-style soundscape and all the drama that goes with it. Ferrari does this better, too. The F80 sounds deathly dull from the outside but is a riot of turbochargers, electric motors and all sorts of mechanical fury within the cockpit. Even so, the W1 is wildly entertaining on track, and the rear-drive configuration makes it more of a challenge and more satisfying than the F80 when chasing lap times or just sliding around for fun. In the Ferrari, you must second-guess what the front e-axle might do, whereas in the W1 it’s all on you. There are plenty of tools to help, including the ingenious Variable Drift Control, but somehow the W1 is more heroic. Or at least fools you into feeling more heroic – which is surely the point! On the road? Nimble, loaded with feel and sublime response. The ride is noticeably tougher than, say, a 750S but the control is ramped-up too, and with a bit more speed the whole car finds a delicious rhythm. Sport mode for the drivetrain brings some nice turbo whooshes and chirps, but the noise remains high-quality rather than extreme excitement. It is perhaps the one area the W1 feels just a little too tame. Of course, there’s nothing tame about the raw performance… which is genuinely shocking and literally hurts your neck muscles after a few hours. How McLaren has given the W1 such immense traction through just two driven wheels is beyond me. So, is it worthy of that ‘1’? I think so. Perhaps we won’t be talking about $25-million auction results for the W1 in 30 years from now, as we are for the F1. Perhaps it doesn’t quite have the amazing presence and jaw-dropping star quality of the simply gorgeous P1. But it is such an intense experience and the way it marries stunning track performance with delicate poise and entertainment on normal roads is something akin to magic. Maybe not ‘the one’ but definitely a searing, outrageous addition to McLaren’s fiercest family line. Just 399 W1’s will be built and they’re all sold. I’m not surprised at all. 1-of-26 Factory Gated-Manual Lamborghini Murcielago LP640-4 Listed on duPont REGISTRY Live

In the 200+ luxury and exotic cars that have crossed the digital block since launch on duPont REGISTRY Live, the variety of models being consigned has certainly evolved, ranging from seven-figure hypercars to humble restomods and beyond. But more recently, the platform has begun consigning some exceptionally rare and historically significant automobiles, typically reserved for some of the industry’s leading auction houses. The car we’re featuring today is no exception. This is a 2007 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 Coupe. Now this is not the first Murciélago on LIVE, as we’ve previously sold three on the platform, including a low-mileage example that fetched $670,950. Even a Roadster variant is currently live, but here’s the thing: not all Murciélagos were created equal. Finished in Giallo Orion, this car is a factory gated manual, and that single detail is noteworthy as most cars were configured with the E-gear automatic. For some context, out of an estimated 179 manual LP640-4 Murciélagos built worldwide, only 26 were delivered to the United States, placing this example in an extremely exclusive group that continues to gain attention as the collector market shifts toward analog supercars. Back in ‘06, Lamborghini revealed the LP640 at the Geneva Motor Show, with a host of updates. The engine grew from 6.2 to 6.5 liters, and output climbed to 640 horsepower, up from 580. 60 mph is done away with in 3.3 seconds, and top speed is an impressive 211 mph, numbers that still hold up today. Penned by Luc Donkerwolke, the design changes over the OG Murci are measured but effective with edgier styling comprising revised bumpers, larger air intakes, updated lighting, and a single center-mounted exhaust. <- Gallery -> This particular example currently has 41,557 miles on the clock and carries a documented history/screen time, having been previously owned by Daily Driven Exotics (DDE) on YouTube. Following a reported 2022 incident per a CarFax report, it underwent a comprehensive full professional repair and restoration by Royalty Exotic Cars in Las Vegas, resulting in a car that presents here close to factory condition. It still retains select updates such as an upgraded aftermarket exhaust system and a 6.5-inch Kenwood touchscreen. The exterior remains true to its original intent with Giallo Orion paint protected by full paint protection film, the optional 18-inch gloss black Hemera-style forged wheels, yellow brake calipers, the iconic dihedral i.e., scissor doors, and an active rear wing. Inside, the cabin stays driver-focused with black leather and yellow stitching, carbon fiber trim across key surfaces, and an analog instrument cluster that keeps everything straightforward and mechanical. At some point, the car was converted to rear wheel drive, but has since been returned to its original All Wheel Drive configuration, and we physically verified this by putting the car up on a lift and confirming the drivetrain setup. Other highlights include carbon ceramic brakes, front axle lift, limited-slip differentials, and electronically controlled damping. There has been active discussion around this car within the enthusiast community, particularly regarding its prior ownership, mileage history, and the circumstances surrounding the 2022 incident. As with any high-profile Murciélago with documented exposure and online history, opinions vary, and prospective bidders are encouraged to conduct their own due diligence. Also, the removal of catalytic converters affects emissions compliance in certain states. However, step back and look at what this Italian exotic represents. Despite these minor shortcomings and the higher mileage, this gated manual Murciélago still holds its ground, because while aftermarket conversions exist, factory manuals sit in a category of their own and continue to remain highly desirable for their rarity. duPont REGISTRY Live Nearly Doubles Weekly Sales to $4.3M

duPont REGISTRY Live delivered one of its strongest weeks so far, with 17 cars sold between March 30 and April 3, generating $4,310,985 in total sales. That figure nearly doubles the previous week’s $2.6 million, signaling a sharp uptick in both transaction value and top-end activity. Since its launch in November 2025, the platform has now moved 197 cars, continuing its rapid expansion as a serious digital marketplace for collector-grade automobiles and more. Lots Closed: Highlights It was Ferrari that set the tone this week. Four cars from Maranello crossed the digital block, led by a highly original 2004 Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale. Finished in Rosso Scuderia with a factory Italian tri-color racing stripe, it achieved $709,800, significantly outperforming its $420,000 duPont REGISTRY Index (dRi) valuation. That result further reinforces the growing appetite for early 2000s, track-focused Ferrari special series models, particularly those that mark the Italian marque’s transition into a more aggressive, lightweight era. Porsche maintained its consistent presence with four sales, led by a 991.2 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Weissach at $483,525. While Ferrari led in overall impact this week, Porsche continues to deliver dependable high-value transactions, reinforcing its role across the duPont REGISTRY Group ecosystem and as the platform’s most stable performer across multiple price tiers, with approximatley 30% of over sales on dR Live. Elsewhere, a 2023 Lamborghini Huracán STO with a custom Ryft aftermarket exhaust brought in $372,700, highlighting continued demand for modern, naturally aspirated V10 supercars positioned at the edge of usability and track capability. The Dodge Viper has been on a roll this past few weeks. A near-new 2017 Viper ACR Extreme with only 28 miles brought in $425,250. Mercedes-Benz also saw renewed attention, with two rare coupes crossing the digital block, including a 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series, 1-of-370 produced for the U.S., which closed at $74,550. At the lower end of the spectrum, engagement remains strong. A C1 1959 Chevrolet Corvette restomod on an Art Morrison chassis achieved $129,675, while a pristine 2005 Nissan 350Z with only 8,800 original miles sold for $ 26,250 as part of a limited two-hour duPont drop. These shorter-format listings continue to introduce momentum into the platform, attracting a different segment of enthusiast-driven transactions. Upcoming Lots <- Gallery -> Looking ahead, 22 cars are currently live on the platform, with inventory once again concentrated around Ferrari, Porsche, a growing number of ultra-rare specialty builds, and a hypercar. At the very top sits a 2022 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport, 1-of-60 produced, that is currently bidding to $2,600,000. Showing 7,630 miles and equipped with approximately $371,000 in factory options, it represents the second Pur Sport example to appear on the platform, after the landmark Jaune-Mosheim spec Chiron Pur Sport sale in January that achieved $4,012,050. Not only was it the first hypercar on the platform, but also the first seven-figure sale. Mercedes-Benz returns with significant depth this week. A rare 2018 Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet has resurfaced with bidding at $450,000. 1-of-99 ever made, the high-riding convertible G-Class was one of the earliest headline sales following the platform’s launch. Alongside it is a 1-of-250 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series, notable as the only AMG Black Series model powered by a V12, currently at $180,500. Three highly collectible examples are live, including the 1-of-2 RUF Ultimate “Bluebird,” now bid to $962,000 and closing tomorrow. It is joined by a 993 1996 RUF Turbo R and a 1984 RUF BTR Flatnose, reinforcing sustained demand for analog, low-production Porsche-based performance cars. Ferrari remains heavily represented with five cars currently listed. Highlights include a 2009 Ferrari F430 Scuderia currently at $485,000, a 2023 Ferrari F8 Spider at sitting $335,500, a 2020 Ferrari 812 Superfast finished in Grigio Grey at $250,000, and a 2024 Ferrari Purosangue currently bid to $266,500. The Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is a significant model for duPont REGISTRY Live. Porsche Continues Its Reign on duPont REGISTRY Live as GT3 RS Leads Weekly Results

duPont REGISTRY Live continues its steady climb, with 16 cars sold between March 23 and March 28, generating over $2.6 million in total sales. Since its launch in November 2025, Porsche has consistently been the top seller on the platform, and the German marque once again set the tone this past week, accounting for five of those transactions. To really drive that point home, 64 Porsches of the 180 cars that have crossed the digital block on dR Live so far, which is just over 30%. While high-performance exotics remain central, this week’s results also highlight the growing influence of restomods, event-driven flash sales, and celebrity-owned luxury sedans. Lots Closed: Highlights Leading the week was an ultra-low mileage (only 85 miles) 992.1 2025 Porsche 911 GT3 RS equipped with the highly desirable Weissach Package, which achieved $414,750. 1-of-2 RUF Ultimate "Bluebird" Listed on duPont REGISTRY Live

It is not often that a pattern begins to form around a name as elusive asRUF, and yet, in recent weeks, duPont REGISTRY Live has done just that. The platform recently recorded the sale of a 2001 RUF RGT, one of 17 examples, which closed at $295,575 in late February. Before that, a 1996 Porsche 911 RUF Turbo R, showing roughly 55,000 miles, sold for $337,050 back in January. Both those cars were factory-built RUFs with documented lineage and a defined place within the company’s production history; this latest example to be listed on dR Live is even rarer. This is the RUF Ultimate based around the (Type 964) 1992 Porsche. People in Porsche circles recognize the RUF CTR Yellowbird. The car seen here is dubbed “Bluebird” and was completed in 2022. Originally commissioned by a close friend of Alois Ruf, it is one of just two ever built and is the only known RUF finished in a blue-on-blue configuration, a one-off paint to Sample exterior over a Nachtblau leather interior. Handcrafted in Pfaffenhausen, in southern Germany, its mechanics mirror the original Ultimate prototype introduced in 2016. It retains identical engine and gearbox specifications. Power comes from a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged, air-cooled flat-six that delivers 580 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque, and it pairs with a six-speed manual and Rear Wheel Drive. This example uses a wide-body steel conversion, with carbon-fiber doors and a carbon-fiber hood. With a curb weight under 2,650 pounds, it can hit 62 mph in under three seconds and top 211 mph. Showing just 3,032 original miles, the car carries a Porsche-sourced WP0 VIN. A 2008 Lamborghini Murciélago Leads duPont REGISTRY Live Weekly Results as Platform Surpasses 160 Sales

duPont REGISTRY Live continues to build momentum, with 17 cars selling this week, bringing total platform sales to 164 vehicles since its launch last November. While early results were dominated by exotics, supercars, and hypercars, including six sales that surpassed a million dollars, including two Bugatti hypercars, recent weeks point to a broader shift. The platform is evolving into a more diversified marketplace, now featuring luxury cars, restomods, and enthusiast-driven machines alongside a core lineup of high-end exotic consignments. Lots Closed: Highlights Leading this week’s results is a low-mileage 2008 Lamborghini Murciélago LP640-4, which achieved $670,950. Finished in Blu Hera over a two-tone Blu Delphinus and Bianco Polar interior, this example shows just 1,232 miles and is presented as a highly preserved, unmodified car with original paint. While this all-wheel drive mid-engine V12 features the E-Gear transmission as opposed to the rare factory manual, this result reflects a growing demand for analog-era V12 Lamborghinis as collectors continue to shift focus towards pre-hybrid supercars. It's the third Murcielago to cross the digital block on dR Live and came very close to another low-mileage LP640-4 that sold for $686,700 back in January. The headline number matters, but the context matters more. It points to a growing appreciation for late-2000s supercars that still sit in the space between analog and modern, a space the Murciélago occupies so well. This week’s group of closing auctions reflects that approach, with three cars that all aim at performance but come from very different places. There’s a modern AMG built with few compromises, a Ferrari from the tail end of the naturally aspirated era, and an American track-focused Mustang that shows how far factory performance and thoughtful modification can go. The most modern and most extreme of the group is a 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series Project One Edition.
