How Porsche Pushed Engineering Boundaries With The 909 Bergspyder’s Fuel Tank

By Tyler Rampersaud –  August 25, 2026

How Porsche Pushed Engineering Boundaries With A Spherical Fuel Tank

Porsche is known for bringing forth performance-oriented engineering innovations throughout its long history, whether that be in its use of transaxles, variable geometry turbochargers, or hybrid technology. However, one of its most unique solutions took place in the world of motorsport, specifically in the 909 Bergspyder. The lightest-ever race car from Porsche, made in 1968, the 909 Bergspyder weighed around 400 kilograms, and it used some radical solutions to achieve that incredibly scant figure. During the European Hill Climb Championship, on the Gaisberg mountain in Salzburg, Austria, Porsche introduced the 909 Bergspyder as a masterpiece of motorsport engineering. While the 909 Bergspyder featured several highly innovative parts, one of the most intriguing was its fuel tank, which was sphere-shaped, twice the size of a soccer ball, and held in by three straps. It was made of thin titanium with a rubber bladder, and it was designed to operate without a fuel lift pump, reducing the weight by an impressive seven kilograms. Along with that unusual solution, the 909 Bergspyder also positioned the seat shell, engine, and five-speed transmission far towards the front of the car, improving the weight distribution while the differential was all the way at the back. Despite this radical innovation and painstaking engineering, the 909 Bergspyder only ran twice, as Porsche focused more on the World Sportscar Championship and Le Mans. Only two Porsche 909 Bergspyders were made, and they were the only cars that Porsche used the spherical fuel tank on. However, the unique engineering solution lives on as a symbol of the dedication and ingenuity given to the world of motorsport, which then goes on to inform the high-tech, performance-oriented solutions that have characterized roadgoing Porsche cars across the manufacturer’s history and to this day. Porsche Remembers Racing Driver Dick Barbour

By Tyler Rampersaud –  June 11, 2026

Porsche Remembers Dick Barbour

Richard “Dick” Barbour was a celebrated racing driver, known for helping shape one of the most important chapters in the history of Porsche motorsport. His endurance racing career saw him competing on IMSA and FIA stages, and one of the most well-known chapters in his time behind the wheel was with the Porsche 935. Known as one of the most important Porsche race cars, the Porsche 935 was absolutely dominant throughout its presence in motorsport. In 1979, the Porsche 935 won the 24 Hours of Le Mans overall, making it one of a small few cars that won the legendary endurance race without being in the top prototype class. While the 935 has worn several liveries, Dick Barbour prominently drove the Porsche 935 K3 in 1980, donning the Apple Computer livery that has since become a fan favorite. Recently, Porsche paid tribute to the iconic design by putting a design inspired by it on the latest Porsche endurance racing hypercar, the Porsche 963, for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race this year at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The design celebrated the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport, as well as the 50th anniversary of Apple. With a white base color and a bright rainbow of colors throughout, the livery is head-turning and instantly memorable, and remains celebrated even after well over 40 years since it was first introduced. Barbour passed away on June 10, 2026, at the age of 85. In Porsche’s announcement acknowledging his passing, the manufacturer said, “His name and career both as a racer and team owner contesting championships in the U.S. and around the world will live on as celebrated chapters in Porsche Motorsport history… We will look back on his legacy fondly forever.” View All Porsche For Sale Image Source: Porsche

Porsche's 963 Brings Back the Apple Livery at Laguna Seca

By Jordan Aquistapace –  April 30, 2026

Porsche's 963 Brings Back the Apple Livery at Laguna Seca

Porsche is tapping into one of its most surprising chapters this weekend, bringing a revived Apple-inspired racing livery to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Both factory Porsche 963 race cars will sport the one-off look, swapping the stock modern Porsche livery for something pulled straight from an almost-forgotten chapter of racing history. 2026 marks 75 years of Porsche Motorsport and 50 years since Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. Instead of doing something polished or predictable, Porsche has gone back to celebrate a car most people don’t even realize existed. GALLERY-EMBED That connection comes from the Porsche 935 K3 owned by Dick Barbour Racing in 1980, including its run at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That car famously sported Apple Computer’s rainbow-striped livery, which at the time was pretty unusual for motorsport and, honestly, still a little today. It wasn’t a long-term sponsorship or anything like that, but it stuck because it just looked so different from everything else on the race track. Seeing that vision carried forward onto a modern prototype like the 963 is where things get seriously nostalgic for Porsche purists and motorsport fanatics. It’s two very different eras of racing intersecting in a way that actually makes sense visually. GALLERY-EMBED And Laguna Seca is an appropriate place for it all to happen. The world-renowned track has deep ties to Porsche’s North American racing story, and it’s close enough to Apple’s Cupertino home base. It’s also hosted several Porsche Rennsport Reunion events, so there’s already a history of the brand treating it as a cultural stage. Whether this Apple throwback is just a one-off or a hint at something to stay, it works because it pulls a real moment from the past and puts it back on track. Porsche’s “Heritage Moments” Gathers 5 Variants Of The 935

By Tyler Rampersaud –  March 30, 2026

Porsche Brings Together 5 Variants of the 935

In March 1976, the Porsche 935 was homologated, and 50 years have passed since then. In that time, the 935 has become one of the most important race cars in the Porsche lexicon, winning races and championships throughout its tenure. To celebrate that anniversary, as well as the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport, five variants of the 935 have been gathered together for the first time for “Porsche Heritage Moments.” The project sees Timo Bernhard and Norbert Singer, a legendary racing driver and former racing engineer, in conversation guiding viewers through individual episodes about the cars, sharing memories and anecdotes along the way. The five cars are the original 1976 Porsche 935, the 935/77, the “Moby Dick” 935/78, the 935 “Baby,” and a prototype that went on to be a part of a cycling record attempt. Based on the 911 and made for Group 5 racing, the 935 was introduced in 1976, and Singer remembers having to work incredibly hard to make sure the car met the standards of the FIA. In 1977, the car was evolved to make use of a twin turbocharger, which alleviated some of the faults of utilizing a single large turbo. Designed for sprint races, the Porsche 935 “Baby,” had a 1.4-liter engine that placed in the two-liter class. However, the “Moby Dick” 935, in contrast, was built with Le Mans ambitions. It won the world championship, but only two of them were made in a short-lived career for the car. The 935/77 test car was a prototype that only saw one race. However, it fulfilled a different purpose, serving as a pace car for cyclist Jean-Claude Rude’s attempt to eclipse 240 kmh on a bicycle. With an incredible legacy shared across the five cars that gathered together, the Porsche 935 and its 50-year legacy is one of the most important chapters in Porsche’s 75 years of motorsport. Porsche Sonderwunsch Reimagines the 911 S/T Legacy

By Jordan Aquistapace –  March 24, 2026

Porsche Sonderwunsch Reimagines the 911 S/T Legacy

Since its humble beginnings, laying roots on the race track, Porsche has always displayed a sense of vibrancy in its cars, both in styling and performance. Today, those colorful cars are marking a resurgence as inspiration for one-off customer configurations, specifically through Porsche’s ultra-exclusive Sonderwunsch program, unlocking specific paint codes and materials. The 1972 Porsche 911 S/T, finished in a Phoenix Red livery, earned its place the hard way, through 27 entries in the Camel GT Challenge across circuits like Sebring and Daytona. It wasn’t a factory RSR, either. It was a modified privateer passion project, shaped by necessity and sharpened by teams like Brumos Racing. Wider rear wheels, purposeful upgrades, and that loud paint gave it a presence like no other. Its racing life ended in 1978 after a crash in Trois-Rivières, but like many great competition cars, the story didn’t stop there.Decades later, now part of a Swiss collection, the same car became something more than just a restored artifact. Through Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program, a 992-generation 911 S/T was commissioned as a one-off tribute, not a replica. It’s not about copying history, it’s about interpreting it. The new 911 S/T focuses heavily on its roots, with Phoenix Red, while subtle flashes of Signal Yellow shine through in deliberate places. The design shies away from period-correct sponsor decals and opts for hand-painted gradients and color transitions that look like motion captured in paint. Interior characteristics quietly reference the Camel GT era without veering into nostalgia, with embroidered headrests, etched trim, and even door graphics nod to the car’s racing lineage. There’s also a subtle asymmetry carried over from the original, mirrored in the use of removable aerodiscs inspired by modern GT3 RS development. It’s the blend of old and new, analog soul and modern execution, that makes the Sonderwunsch 911 S/T so influential. Not just a tribute, but proof that the right kind of history doesn’t fade, it evolves. All Porsche 911 S/T Inventory

Porsche 963 to Run Historic Mobil 1 911 GT1-Inspired Livery at 12 Hours of Sebring

By Khris Bharath –  March 18, 2026

Porsche 963 to Run Historic Mobil 1 911 GT1-Inspired Livery at 12 Hours of Sebring

Porsche has just unveiled a striking new Mobil 1 livery for both its 963 prototypes ahead of the 12 Hours of Sebring, marking 30 years of technical collaboration with ExxonMobil.  Compared to the traditional red and black colors, the Sebring livery adopts a predominantly white base, accented by bold blue and red striping inspired by the 1996 Porsche 911 GT1. It is cleaner, more retro in tone, and deliberately tied to a defining moment when Porsche and Mobil 1 first aligned on both racing and road car development. <- Gallery -> “The close and highly trusted partnership between Porsche and Mobil 1 has produced countless unforgettable moments and lasting innovations.” - Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President, Porsche Motorsport. With Porsche having withdrawn its factory effort from the FIA World Endurance Championship after the 2025 season, historic venues like Sebring on the IMSA race calendar now carry greater importance and weight within Porsche’s global motorsport program. The 3.74-mile circuit, built on a former military airfield in Central Florida, remains one of the most punishing venues in endurance racing. Around 30 percent of the surface consists of concrete slabs, creating sustained vibration and stress across the gruelling 12-hour race. It is a track that rewards durability as much as outright speed. Last season, Porsche Penske Motorsport secured both the IMSA GTP manufacturer and team championships, supported by victories at Daytona and Sebring. A one-two finish here confirmed the 963’s ability to combine pace with consistency. “In the tightly contested IMSA series, the smallest details make the difference,” - Urs Kuratle, Director Factory Motorsport LMDh. Porsche enters as the benchmark. The #7 car, driven by Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich, leads the championship after victory at Daytona in January this year. The sister #6 entry sits fourth, while Porsche leads the manufacturers’ standings. Beyond GTP, Porsche fields multiple 911 GT3 R entries across GTD Pro and GTD, alongside seven 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport cars in the Michelin Pilot Challenge. The new 992.2-based 911 Cup car also debuts in North America this week. With 19 overall Sebring victories, Porsche holds the event’s benchmark. This weekend, the 963 carries that legacy forward at a moment when the German marque’s endurance future is being reshaped around North America. View All Porsches For Sale Images: Porsche Motorsports

Porsche Wins Third 24 Hours of Daytona In A Row

By Tyler Rampersaud –  January 26, 2026

Porsche Wins 2026 24 Hours of Daytona

Each year, the endurance racing season starts with one of the world’s most iconic and historic motorsport events, and certainly one of the most challenging: the 24 Hours of Daytona. With decades of heritage present in the track, the teams, the cars, and the drivers alike, the Rolex 24 At Daytona is one of the most exciting races on the calendar, starting each racing season off on a high note. This past weekend saw the 2026 Rolex 24 at Daytona take place, and the result was Porsche taking home another overall victory, its third in a row. While the win is an incredible achievement for the Porsche Penske Motorsport team, it bears even greater significance as it makes Porsche one of just three teams who has a Daytona ‘hat trick’ to their name. The number 7 Porsche 963 racing hypercar claimed the victory, driven by Felipe Nasr, Julien Andlauer, and Laurin Heinrich, finishing just one second after the second-place Cadillac. <- Gallery -> For Felipe Nasr, the victory marks his third Daytona win in a row, making him one of only three drivers in the history of the race to have that achievement, alongside Peter Gregg and Castroneves. Meanwhile, the number 6 Porsche 963 car finished in seventh place. With yet another incredible win at Daytona, Porsche is permanently engraved in the canon of legendary motorsport titans. Porsche Announces Formula E Customer Team & Four Factory ...

Porsche brings even more intensity to an electrifying racing series. Formula E, which is approaching its thirteenth season since the series' introduction in 2014, delivers the excitement and intensity of some of the world’s premier open-wheel, single-seater championships, along with the futurism and cutting-edge innovation of electric mobility. As such, a growing number of manufacturers have joined the series to compete, and the current reigning Manufacturers’ World Champion in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is Porsche, and coming off its win this year, Porsche is going into next season with an even stronger presence. For the 2026/2027 season, Porsche is fielding four cars itself on the Formula E grid. In addition, Season 13 will see a Porsche customer team competing. That’s not the only thing making the competition more intense for the upcoming season, however. The total of six Porsche 99X Electric Formula E race cars will be part of the GEN4 generation of Formula E cars, which have over 600 kW, or roughly 805 horsepower on tap. The increase in performance across the Formula E grid is the biggest increase in performance for the cars yet, and, driving excitement for electric cars and electric mobility on the road, as well as the racing grid, Porsche’s own lineup of production electric vehicles is growing as well. Starting with the Taycan, Porsche now has an electric version of its iconic Macan SUV in its lineup, and an electric version of the Cayenne is coming, as well, with incredible technology that has the potential to push the entire EV industry forward. With a bigger presence in electric racing and electric vehicles than ever, Porsche is making a bold commitment to electrification across its brand. View All Porsche For Sale Image Source: Porsche

Porsche Wins 2025 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Driver, Manu...

Porsche reasserts its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship dominance. Last year, Porsche’s 963 racing hypercar and the 911 GT3 R were superstars in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Some of the world’s most iconic and challenging race tracks, including Daytona, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Road America, and Indianapolis, saw Porsche come out on top in both the top-class GTP category and the GTD Pro class of the championship. AO Racing’s Porsche 911 GT3 R won the GTD Pro championship, snagging the Teams’, Drivers’, and Manufacturers’ titles with its cartoonish and now incredibly popular “Rexy” livery. Meanwhile, the Porsche 963 hypercar did the same in the GTP Category, with both Porsche Penske Motorsport cars finishing first and second in the Drivers’ Championship, the Manufacturers’ Championship, and the Teams’ Championship. That dominance meant that in this year’s IMSA calendar of races, Porsche was the team to beat, and the pressure was on for Porsche to defend its many titles. Road Atlanta’s legendary Petit Le Mans race took place this past weekend as the SportsCar Championship’s season finale. With the championship titles all coming to a head at the 10-hour race, Porsche’s hypercar factory team managed to continue its winning streak for the 2025 season, coming away from Petit Le Mans with all of its championship titles defended. Cadillac Whelen finished first at Petit Le Mans, with driver Earl Bamber crossing the line in the Cadillac V-Series.R. However, the Porsche Penske Motorsport factory team’s Porsche 963 hypercars’ third and tenth-place finishes secured the team the manufacturer and team titles, and Matt Campbell and Mathieu Jaminet claimed the driver titles. In the championship’s Michelin Endurance Cup, Felipe Nasr and Nick Tandy claimed the drivers’ championship win. In a Halloween-themed skeletal livery, the AO Racing “Rexy” 911 GT3 R fought hard but came short of this year’s GTD Pro class wins. Other Porsche customer teams with both 963 hypercars and the 911 GT3 R added Porsche representation to the grid throughout the season. With solid finishes at Petit Le Mans, however, the factory hypercars continued a streak of IMSA dominance that will be tested again at the start of next year, with the Rolex 24 at Daytona taking place at the legendary Daytona International Speedway from January 21 to 25, 2026.
